NYC interior designer Bennett Leifer outlined what's in and what's out right now. He spoke with Insider about what his clients are seeking in their homes now, and the tired trends they're ready to leave behind. John Keeble/Getty ImagesLeifer said his clients aren't using white as a fallback anymore, but rather an intentional decision. "It has to finish a space to a certain degree," Leifer said, but clients aren't falling back on the old rulebook. Instead they're curious to experiment with new touches, like the project where Leifer's using bronze casings around windows.
In 2019, Martin Scorsese said that Marvel movies were “not cinema” and worried cinema was being “invaded” by them. As it happens, I’m not a fan of Marvel films either. For almost the entire history of movies, women haven’t had access to the capital required to make them. There were at least 15 women directors in the commercial film industry during that time. That’s dismal but more than twice as high as the number of female film directors of the same era.
GENEVA, Nov 25 (Reuters) - The Taliban's treatment of Afghan women and girls, including their exclusion from parks and gyms as well as schools and universities, may amount to a crime against humanity, a group of U.N. experts said on Friday. The assessment by the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan Richard Bennett and nine other U.N. experts says the treatment of women and girls may amount to 'gender persecution' under the Rome Statute to which Afghanistan is a party. There was no immediate response from a Taliban spokesperson to a Reuters request for comment on the experts' assessment. The experts also cited as an example the arrest earlier this month of female activist Zarifa Yaqobi and four male colleagues. They say they respect women's rights in accordance with their interpretation of Islamic law.

With the Men’s World Cup hurtling toward us, in which the United States men’s team will play mighty England on Black Friday, one sporting question is flung my way with increasing urgency: Which side am I on? I am a British-born, recent American citizen who has dedicated his life to covering the fast-growing sport of soccer in the U.S. People expect a piercing and revealing response when they ask me which team I will be cheering for when my birth nation battles my chosen home in the opening round, as if it’s a sporting version of Sophie’s Choice.
The iconic nightly news program announced Wednesday that legendary anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff will sign off from the anchor desk on Friday, December 30. Woodruff, 75, will pivot to a two-year project aimed at understanding polarization in America and how it can be remedied. Taking Woodruff’s place at the anchor desk will be Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett, PBS officially announced (you’ll remember that we, along with others, reported this back in May). But while significant structural changes shouldn’t be expected on the show, “NewsHour” viewers will still see a different program with the anchors bringing their own distinctive styles. “‘NewsHour’ is so much bigger than just an hour of television,” Nawaz said, adding that younger viewers interact with the show in totally different ways.

Subway reported strong third-quarter sales Monday and publicly unveiled its first Grab and Go “smart fridge” filled with premade sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Subway is rolling out Grab & Go fridges that have pre-mad sandwiches. In 2020 the company began selling premade sandwiches in regular fridges at retail locations like casinos, gas stations and airports. Subway attributed its recent success to its new “Subway Series” menu — which was streamlined to help speed up service — and an increase in digital orders.
The S&P 500 jumped 5.5% on Thursday on news of cooling inflation. Investors are hoping the Fed will back off of hawkish policy sooner than they say. The SPDR S&P 500 Trust (SPY) offers exposure to the S&P 500 index. Stocks powered higher this week after the October inflaton report but the path to year-end gains remains volatile, market analysts say. It won't be a straight-up rally," Nancy Tengler of Laffer Tengler Investments says. People covering short positions and outsized influence of trading algorithms appeared to have helped fuel Thursday's rally, Tengler said in taking a broader view of that day's run higher. Another inflation report is due before the Fed's next meeting. "If there's still work to be done with inflation then rates are still going to go higher.
