We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. A vain and ambitious cigar-smoking bully who wore riding breeches, a polished helmet and boots and carried ivory-handled revolvers, he led troops on successful lightning strikes through German-held territory near the end of World War II. Musk has repeatedly been criticized for enabling and boosting antisemitic content on the platform.”“Isaacson tries to square these two Musks. During Trump’s first impeachment, Romney became the first senator in US history to vote to remove a president of his own party from office. He has been willing to do what he believes to be right — consequences be damned.”The differences between Romney and Trump were many.

The Federal Reserve is widely anticipated to hold rates steady in the week ahead, but key for investors will be the central bank's guidance on where it's headed from here. Investors are assessing a mixed batch of economic reports ahead of the Fed's September policy meeting. Meanwhile, August retail sales came in better than expected, jumping 0.6% against a 0.1% increase expected by economists. Housing data released in the week ahead could show whether housing demand remains solid. Week ahead calendar All times ET.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Alexander Nguyen, a software engineer who moved from New York City to Seattle for a job at Amazon. It was his first job out of college, and he says it was the loneliest time of his life. Finally, after a three-month job search, things started looking up: I received a software-development-engineering job offer from Amazon in 2020. Back when I got the job at Amazon, all I was thinking about was my tech career and the $150,000 salary. Looking back now, I realize perhaps I should have looked a little bit harder for opportunities in New York before taking the first tech job that came my way.

NEW YORK (AP) — Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr.'s alleged attack on his girlfriend at a New York City hotel left the woman with a fractured neck vertebrae and a cut above her right eye, prosecutors revealed at his arraignment Tuesday. Porter, 23, is charged with felony assault and strangulation in connection with the incident Monday at the Millennium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan. Hospital testing showed that the woman, 26, sustained a fractured vertebrae in her neck, the criminal complaint said. In April 2021, the NBA fined Porter $50,000 for violating the league’s COVID-19 health and safety rules by visiting a Miami strip club. The fugitive who has eluded the authorities in Pennsylvania for nearly two weeks after breaking out of jail is now armed, having stolen a rifle from a house, officials said on Tuesday. Seeing the tracks of his prison-issued shoes at the scene of the sighting, officers followed the trail into the woods. A little after 10 p.m., Colonel Bivens said, Mr. Cavalcante saw a garage door that was open. He went inside the garage, where he found a .22 caliber rifle leaning in a corner. The owner of the house was in the garage at the time, and fired several shots at Mr. Cavalcante with a pistol, but Mr. Cavalcante escaped with the rifle.

Mexico's Election Year Deficit Plan Fuels Fear Over Finances

By Dave Graham and Diego OréMEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The Mexican government's plan to run up the biggest budget deficit in decades during the 2024 general election year could put pressure on public finances and eventually threaten its credit rating, analysts said on Monday. Lopez Obrador last week backed former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as his party's candidate to succeed him. Historic data show the projected budget deficit for 2024 will be the highest since 1988 as a proportion of GDP. The government's higher spending plans should bolster Latin America's second-biggest economy, which has outpaced forecasts this year, brightening the outlook for 2024. He also noted that since Mexico's current account deficit is currently considerably lower than foreign direct investment, there was a pool of untapped demand in the economy that the government could temporarily offset via higher spending.

Public schools with no air conditioning or whose cooling systems are inoperable due to power outages blamed on a hurricane-battered electric grid are seeking relief, but it’s unlikely they’ll find it soon. Pedro Pierluisi quietly vetoed a bill that called for air conditioning systems for public schools. But air conditioning remains rare at public schools, which depend on fans and trade winds that blow through windows with metal shutters. It's unknown how many public schools lack air conditioning or have air conditioners that don't work because of electrical problems. More than 50% of public schools also have reported a heat-related emergency.

Russia says Ukraine launched drone attacks on Kursk region
  + stars: | 2023-09-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Sept 4 (Reuters) - Ukraine launched drone attacks on the Kursk region of Russia overnight from Sunday to Monday, with the Russian defence ministry saying its forces had shot down two drones after midnight on Monday. The drone attack on the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine to its west, began around 1 a.m. Monday (2200 GMT Sunday), the defence ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. This followed a report Sunday evening by the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, that debris from a downed drone sparked a fire at a non-residential building in the city of Kurchatov. Drone attacks on Russian targets, especially in Crimea - annexed by Moscow in 2014 - and in regions bordering Ukraine, have become almost a daily occurrence since two drones were destroyed over the Kremlin in early May. Ukraine rarely takes direct responsibility for such drone strikes but says destroying Russian military infrastructure helps a counteroffensive Kyiv began in June.
