Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed on Thursday that his company's Optimus humanoid robots could eventually make the automaker worth more than half of that. As for shareholder value, Musk said Optimus could be the catalyst for lifting Tesla's market cap to $25 trillion someday. The company, he predicted, will have "over 1,000, or a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla" in 2025. Getting to a $25 trillion market cap would mean that Tesla would be worth about eight times Apple's value today. He did say that autonomous vehicles could get the company to a market cap of $5 trillion to $7 trillion.

An electric Ford truck is displayed during the Electrify Expo D.C. in Washington, D.C., on July 23, 2023. Ford Motor is ending a controversial electric vehicle dealership program that initially asked store owners to invest upward of $1 million to sell EVs. That's led to automakers delaying or canceling future electric vehicles and investments. "The world has changed," Marin Gjaja, chief operating officer of Ford's Model E electric vehicle business, said Thursday during a media briefing. Instead, Ford will open EV sales to all of its dealers in an attempt to grow sales of its all-electric cars and trucks.

OPEC+ members recently announced plans to bring 2.5 million bpd back to the market from October through September 2025. If the group follows through with its announced plan, the oil market will see a surplus of 2.6 million bpd or more. Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Hsueh said the OPEC+ production plan will cast a bearish shadow over the next two years . It is "inconceivable that the market could absorb anything close" to 2.5 million bpd, Hsueh said. The International Energy Agency warned Wednesday the world will be awash in oil by 2030, with production capacity outpacing demand projections by eight million bpd.

The impact on China’s EV makers will vary depending on the level of tariff and each company’s cost structure. “One critical issue for China is that the EU accounted for 38% of China’s EV exports in 2023,” Sebastian said. The Paris-based IEA said Wednesday that it expects growth in global oil production — led by the United States and other countries in the Americas — to “inflate the world’s spare (oil) capacity cushion” to levels seen only once before, during the coronavirus pandemic when oil prices crashed. By 2030, global oil supply will outstrip demand by a “staggering” 8 million barrels per day, according to forecasts published by the agency in its medium-term oil market report. “(That’s) a major, major surplus and… might be one of the highest in the history,” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, told reporters. The IEA also forecast growth in global oil demand to “slow progressively” over the rest of the decade, with demand peaking by 2029 before contracting slightly the year after. Despite the cuts, oil prices have trended downward in recent months.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, launched the probe in October to establish whether Chinese EV prices are artificially low because of subsidies and so hurt European carmakers. Europe is the main destination for Chinese EV exports. The new EV tariffs are likely to kick off intense negotiations between Beijing and Brussels aimed at averting a damaging trade war. Many of them manufacture cars in China and then sell them in Europe, a set-up that will be more costly as a result of the higher tariffs. Alternatively, Beijing could pledge investment into EU countries and promise better market access in China for EU firms, the Rhodium analysts wrote.

The federal government has issued more than $1 billion in tax credits as an upfront cash incentive to buyers of electric vehicles, the U.S. Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday. The Inflation Reduction Act created a mechanism whereby tax credits for buyers of new and used EVs — worth up to $7,500 and $4,000, respectively — could be delivered by car dealers at the point of sale. Previously, consumers had to wait until filing their annual tax return, perhaps months or more than a year after their vehicle purchase, to get the federal credit. Americans can now also get the EV tax credit upfront regardless of their federal tax liability, which wasn't the case prior to 2024. "This has never been done before," Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said during a press call.

Elon Musk's $56 billion pay package is "outrageous," according to longtime Tesla investor Ross Gerber. Investors are voting on Musk's pay package for the second time on Thursday, after previously approving it in 2018. "The reason the pay package was voted down is because the board of directors at Tesla is an absent board. I just think that they're just creating more problems, and Elon and his board should work on a fair pay package," Gerber said. I'd love to go to my own company and negotiate my own pay package with myself."
