Venus's record 24th Wimbledon ends at first hurdle

The 43-year-old American, contesting the Wimbledon singles for a record 24th time, still retains the easy power that once made her the queen of Centre Court but succumbed 6-4 6-3 after a nasty early fall hindered her movement. It was just bad luck for me," former world number one Williams told reporters later. Williams had more treatment before the start of set two but dropped serve immediately with a forehand into the net. Asked if she had considered pulling out after her slip, Williams said her only thought had been trying to figure out a way to win. As part of their return, players from the two nations are playing as neutrals and are not allowed to receive state funding or have sponsorship from Russian or Belarusian companies. Britain is a major ally of Ukraine and continues to provide military support but there was no animosity from the crowd towards former world number one Azarenka as she edged past China's Yuan Yue 6-4 5-7 6-4 in the first round. The Hot New Italian Player at Wimbledon: Gucci
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Jessica Testa | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It was the kind of bag you may spot in the overhead bin of an airplane’s first-class cabin. Except it was being carried onto Centre Court at Wimbledon by a 6-foot-2-inch redhead. Jannik Sinner, 21, the Italian tennis player ranked eighth in the world, broke from tradition Monday when he emerged on court with a custom-made duffel bag wrapped in Gucci’s “GG” monogram, its red and green straps slung over a shoulder. But that kind of sartorial energy has not yet come to tennis — especially not to Wimbledon, the most traditional of the four Grand Slam tournaments, with its strict all-white uniform requirements. (This is the first year that women playing at Wimbledon are allowed to wear nonwhite underwear, to ease anxiety around periods.)

Rublev leads Russian Wimbledon return with easy win
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Rublev is one of 17 Russian and Belarusian players in the men's and women's singles draws after they were banned in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Wimbledon was the only one of the four Grand Slam tournaments to ban Russian and Belarusian players last year -- a decision that resulted in ranking points being taken away from the event by both the ATP and WTA Tours. As part of their return, players from two nations are playing as neutrals and must sign a "waiver" pledging not to support Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime. Players are not allowed to receive state funding or have sponsorship from Russian or Belarusian companies. He looked comfortable on the grass as he proved a class above 64th-ranked Purcell to reach the second round.

Last year, when Ben Shelton decided to leave college and turn professional, he wondered aloud to his father, Bryan, a former player on the men’s tennis tour, if they ought to embark on a venture together. Sorry, Bryan Shelton told his son, he already had a full-time job coaching at the University of Florida. Bryan Shelton handed the reins to Dean Goldfine, a highly respected coach who had previously worked with the former world No. Division I tennis tournament, the Sheltons announced that Ben had a new/old full-time coach. “It was the right time,” Bryan Shelton said.

Some say GOAT’s origins actually spring from a flamboyant, blond-tressed wrestler, George Wagner, who was known as Gorgeous George and who in the 1940s and ’50s earned lavish paydays by turning trash talk into fine art. “So keep on bragging, keep on sassing, and always be outrageous.”This week marks the moment when sport’s most legitimate GOAT talk hovers over tennis and an event its organizers not-so-humbly call the Championships. That will drive fans of Rafael Nadal, who is stuck at 22 major titles, to distraction. They will argue that their idol would have won 25 major titles (or more) by now, if not for injuries. But, by goodness, he’s Roger Federer, fine linen with a forehand with 20 Slams and a raft of epic final-round battles to his name.

CNN —Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of Wimbledon on the eve of this year’s tournament after failing to recover from a wrist injury. “During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. Wimbledon responded to the news by wishing Kyrgios a “swift recovery.”“Hope to see you back on our courts next year,” the tournament tweeted. No slip-ups as Djokovic gets record quest under way
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Mitch Phillips | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, July 3 (Reuters) - Four-times defending champion and hot favourite Novak Djokovic began his record quest with a straight-sets Wimbledon victory over a willing but eventually outgunned Argentine Pedro Cachin on Centre Court on Monday. "For me, the opening match is a little bit tricky, I've not played any warm-up match and grass is a little different to clay," Djokovic said. "I've managed to adapt pretty well over the years and hopefully I manage to do it again." Djokovic accepted that the rain delay was frustrating for the crowd but said it was still slippery until after the roof had been reopened. The action resumed after 70 minutes – with the roof open again – and Djokovic hit the ground running with an immediate break.

CNN —Novak Djokovic had a brief stint as a groundsman during his first-round match at Wimbledon on Monday, using his towel to dry the grass on Centre Court. When the match resumed, Djokovic triumphed 6-3 6-3 7-6 (7-4) against the Argentine to kick off his pursuit of a fifth straight Wimbledon title. “It was definitely frustrating, of course, for the crowd waiting for us to come out on the court,” said Djokovic. After five, 10 minutes, we were out and about.”Unperturbed by the delay, Djokovic breezed through his first-round encounter against Cachín in a playing time of two hours and 12 minutes. His bid to capture a third grand slam title this year will continue on Wednesday against Australia’s Jordan Thompson, who came from two sets down to defeat American Brandon Nakashima 2-6 2-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.

The 36-year-old Djokovic, who has only lost twice at Wimbledon in a decade, tops the bill on Monday when he begins the Centre Court programme against Argentina's Pedro Cachin. Following Djokovic on to the hallowed turf, five-times women's champion Venus Williams, aged 43, will try and roll back the years as her 24th Wimbledon appearance begins against Ukraine's Elina Svitolina. Rain showers are expected throughout the opening days although that will not impact those with tickets for Centre Court and Court One, both of which boast retractable roofs. Political slogans of any sort are banned around the grounds with Wimbledon organisers determined the focus should remain firmly on the tennis. All 17 players from those two countries, including men's third seed Daniil Medvedev, are competing as neutrals.

Leaf-blowers to the rescue at slippery Wimbledon

[1/2] Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 3, 2023 Groundstaff use leaf blowers to dry the court as the first round match between Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Argentina’s Pedro Cachin is suspended due to rain REUTERS/Andrew CouldridgeLONDON, July 3 (Reuters) - Frustrated fans were left wondering quite what was the point of Wimbledon's 80 million-pound ($101 million) Centre Court roof on Monday when Novak Djokovic's match was delayed for over an hour as ball boys took to using leaf-blowers to dry the grass. Defending champion Djokovic had just taken the first set 6-3 against Argentina's Pedro Cachin when light rain took the players off and led to the roof being slid into place - a process that takes 10 minutes. Fans and TV viewers expecting a quick resumption, however, were to be disappointed as, accompanied by tournament referee Gerry Armstrong, Djokovic patrolled the famous square of grass he has ruled for five years, dabbing a toe and a towel at areas he considered dangerously slippery. While play resumed on Court One, it remained suspended on Centre, until, somewhat bizarrely, the roof, completed in a blaze of publicity in 2009, was re-opened and the match resumed after a 70-minute hiatus. Garcia takes French hopes into Wimbledon second round
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Clare Lovell | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Garcia, seeded five, has a game suited to grass and used her speed and agility at the net as well as powerful returns to grind down her 21-year-old opponent. Garcia, 29, who has twice reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, suffered a brief wobble at the start of the second set, spraying unforced errors around the court and Volynets took advantage, breaking serve twice for a 3-0 lead. The Californian, whose only previous Wimbledon main draw appearance in 2021 ended in first-round defeat, could not cope when Garcia put her game back together. "I had to have a reaction and I was able to come back quickly," Garcia said in an on-court interview. When play resumed Garcia did not hang about, winning the fifth game in a row when Volynets served a double fault then serving for the match.

But facing break point in the third game, Williams charged the net and then crumpled onto the grass with a scream as she clutched her right knee, which was wrapped in a support band. Williams remained on the ground for several minutes, with Svitolina placing a towel under her head for support. “I was literally killing it — then I got killed by the grass,” Williams said. The effort lasted just six games: Serena Williams had to withdraw in the first round because of an ankle injury. Serena Williams returned to Wimbledon last year at the start of what seems to have been a final summer of professional tennis, though one never knows these days.

Ruud staves off Lokoli to reach Wimbledon second round

LONDON, July 3 (Reuters) - Casper Ruud found his groove on grass after a wobble as the world number four battled past French qualifier Laurent Lokoli 6-1 5-7 6-4 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon second round on Monday and match his best showing at the Grand Slam. "I take every match as an underdog," Ruud said following just his fourth Tour-level match win on grass. "At Wimbledon, I don't have the perfect game to play on grass but today I did quite well. Laurent maybe was a bit nervous, maybe it's one of the first times he plays on a big court like this," Ruud said. "Honestly, for me too it was the first time playing on Court One so I was also a bit nervous.

Novak Djokovic, bent over with a towel in hand, delighted the Centre Court crowd during a rain delay at Wimbledon on Monday when he mopped some moisture from the grass. Djokovic has not lost a match at Wimbledon since 2017, and with a victory over Pedro Cachin of Argentina in their first-round meeting Monday, he extended his record over the last five Wimbledon tournaments to 29-0. He has won the last four men’s singles titles, and one more this year would set him up to eclipse even more names in the record book. Djokovic would also tie Roger Federer for most Wimbledon men’s singles titles (eight) and tie Bjorn Borg for the most consecutively (five). (Court won 13 majors before 1968, during a time when professionals were not allowed to play in the majors.)

"Right now I'm very frustrated and disappointed," Gauff said after losing 6-4 4-6 6-2, her first ever opening round defeat at the grasscourt major. "I have to go back to the drawing board and see where I need to improve and how to do the right drills to do that." Opponents have targeted Gauff's vulnerable forehand and she said she knows that shot needs work. "When I was higher ranked and everything, people looked at me like I should win," Kenin said. They whomp on the sunflower seeds and I feel as I do when I’ve served something to the children that they particularly like, as if I’ve achieved something, if only by chance. Dutch babies, eggy batter poured into a hot pan filled with butter, are an example of that. They’re served either sweet (as in this caramel apple version) or savory (with bacon and runny Camembert). It’s a fulfilling magic trick, to serve Dutch babies. Today, I’m excited to make Yewande Komolafe’s new recipe for a goat cheese and dill Dutch baby (above), topped with crunchy watercress and dressed with drizzles of honey and lemon juice.
