Sweden is considering sending Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, according to a new report. Even if Stockholm agrees to send Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, because it would first take time to consider the transfer and then train Ukrainian pilots, the fighter jets likely wouldn't see combat experience until mid-2024 at the earliest, the report said. The Ukrainian pilots are expected to arrive at Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson, Arizona, by October. Ukraine’s leaders have asked for fighter jets from the West since the earliest days of the war. Loh said the Air National Guard assessed the three-month timeline based on training Ukrainian pilots received on Fresno, California-based F-15Cs, another advanced Air National Guard fighter jet. That exposure allowed the Air National Guard to assess that Ukraine’s aviators were already using more Western tactics in flying and that it would not take long to bring them up to speed, Loh said. The nine-month timeframe is the estimate to get pilots with no previous fighter jet experience flying the F-16s, Loh said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admitted that Ukraine began its counteroffensive too late. The late start gave Russia ample time to plant land mines on Ukrainian soil, Zelenskyy told CNN. "Look, we waited too long, it's true," Zelenskyy told CNN's Fareed Zakaria of Ukraine's counteroffensive in a new interview that aired on Sunday. Zelenskyy told CNN the counteroffensive was delayed as the Eastern European country waited for more deliveries of Western weaponry. "But we have to understand, cause we waited too long, they put mines," Zelenskyy said, referring to Russian forces.

The harrowing documentary, which was produced by the AP and the PBS series “Frontline,” is culled from 30 hours of footage AP journalist Mstyslav Chernov and his colleagues shot in Mariupol following Russia’s Feb. 24, 2022, invasion of Ukraine and its siege of the city. It documents fighting in the streets, the crushing strain on Mariupol’s residents, and attacks that killed pregnant women, children and others. The siege, which ended on May 20, 2022, with the surrender of a small group of outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian fighters at the Azovstal steel plant, left thousands dead and the city in ruins. “20 Days in Mariupol” won the Sundance Global Audience Award for Best Documentary and several other prizes. Raney Aronson-Rath, editor-in-chief and executive producer of “Frontline,” called it “deeply meaningful” to have the opportunity to screen the documentary at the United Nations.

Author Walter Isaacson took to social media Friday night to try to "clarify" an excerpt from his upcoming book, "Elon Musk." The excerpt received swift backlash after it described how Musk thwarted a Ukrainian attack on Russian warships. Musk eventually soured on the arrangement and said "Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars," according to the book. "They asked Musk to enable it for their drone sub attack on the Russian fleet. Isaacson's X post came after a top aide to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lashed out at Musk over the excerpt.

Elon Musk defended his decision to block a Ukrainian attack that could have decimated Russia's navy. Per a new biography, he refused Ukraine use of his Starlink network to make the attack in 2022. Musk appears to believe that by blocking the attack he prevented a nuclear war. Musk argued repeatedly that he had avoided a nuclear war by thwarting the attack, believing that would have been Russia's response had it gone ahead. The US may send the Army Tactical Missile System to Ukraine, two officials told ABC News. The US has long been reluctant to send ATACMS, also known as the Army Tactical Missile System. Ben Hodges, a retired US general, previously told Insider that ATACMS would allow Ukraine to reach targets beyond Russia's defensive line and destroy headquarters and logistics sites. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has long argued that his forces need the ATACMS to fight Russia. The US has resisted granting ATACMS to Ukraine, worrying that Russia's President Vladimir Putin could escalate the conflict.

Elon Musk refused to activate Starlink satellites and thwarted a Ukrainian attack on the Russian navy, he said. Starlink satellites have been vital in allowing Ukraine to connect to the internet during the invasion. "There was an emergency request from government authorities to activate Starlink all the way to Sevastopol. "By not allowing Ukrainian drones to destroy part of the Russian military fleet via Starlink interference, Elon Musk allowed this fleet to fire Kalibr missiles at Ukrainian cities," Podolyak said. Musk has faced criticism for echoing Russian talking points on the Ukraine war, suggesting that Ukraine should hand over territory in east Ukraine to Russia.

Ukraine's former defense minister said a peace deal where Ukraine gives up land won't stop Russia. Reznikov said a similar deal didn't stop Hitler in the 1930s and "Putin's actions follow a similar pattern." Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said they will not accept a peace deal that includes giving up land to Russia. Ukraine has also told China, which has expressed interest in brokering a peace deal, that it won't accept a deal that involves giving Russia territory. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this year that a peace agreement can't include giving land to Russia, or else it wouldn't be a "just peace and a durable peace."

A top advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blasted Elon Musk over a recent report. Musk reportedly thwarted a Ukrainian attack on a Russian naval fleet by shutting off his Starlink network. "Why do some people so desperately want to defend war criminals," the Ukrainian advisor asked. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this year’s host, has pledged not to let Ukraine overshadow the needs of the mostly developing nations in the so-called “ Global South,” but many of those issues are closely affected by the war. Russia's attack on Ukraine and China's growing assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region have added friction, pitting some of the most powerful G20 countries directly against each other diplomatically, Lesser said. About half of the G20 countries are found in the Global South — depending on how one defines it — and Modi hopes to add the African Union as a bloc member. In preparation, he held a virtual “Voice of the Global South” summit in January and in working groups has targeted issues critical to developing nations, including alternative fuels like hydrogen, resource efficiency, developing a common framework for digital public infrastructure and food security. “While a yearlong presidency cannot solve all the problems of the Global South, India has managed to set the ball rolling on some of these issues, and individual G20 countries can carry forward the work,” she said.

WASHINGTON — A Ukrainian official slammed Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk for ordering engineers to shut off Starlink's satellite network over Crimea last year in order to thwart a Ukrainian attack on Russian warships. The book, titled "Elon Musk," will be released Tuesday. In Ukraine, Starlink has worked as the connective tissue for crucial battlefield communications. Musk, according to Isaacson, was also engaged in a texting conversation with Fedorov. The official pleaded with Musk to restore Starlink's connectivity so that Ukrainian submarine drones could carry out the attack on Russia's warship fleet.

The US officially announced Wednesday it will send Ukraine depleted-uranium tank ammunition. This powerful ammunition gives Kyiv the capability to not only punch holes in Russian armor, but also do additional damage inside enemy vehicles as the fragments potentially ignite. The Pentagon listed the 120 mm depleted-uranium tank ammunition as part of a $175 security assistance package that was officially revealed on Wednesday. The US is not the first NATO member to send Ukraine depleted-uranium ammunition. The latest US security assistance announcement, which includes the depleted-uranium tank rounds, comes ahead of what is expected to be an imminent delivery of 31 Abrams tanks.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s health episodes show “no evidence” of being a stroke or seizure disorder, the Capitol physician said in a letter on Tuesday, offering little further explanation for the apparent freeze-ups that have drawn concerns about the 81-year-old's situation. But the episodes have fueled quiet concern among Republican senators and intense speculation in Washington about McConnell’s ability to remain as leader. Nevertheless, many Republican allies have flocked to McConnell’s side, ensuring the famously guarded leader a well of support. McConnell’s health has visibly declined since the concussion in March, after which he took some weeks to recover. Before freezing up last week, McConnell had just given a 20-minute speech with no issues.
