Getting into the right mindset for Valentine’s Day
  + stars: | 2024-02-14 | by ( Ian Kerner | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
No matter your view on the topic, Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to put sex on the calendar, but don’t just focus on the act itself at the end of the evening. I’m not telling you to rearrange your entire day for sex, but to make small intentional choices that are pro-sex. That’s why my Valentine’s Day advice for you is not to just have sex. It’s Valentine’s Day, so come up with a sexy prize for each win and a naughty consequence for each loss. Don’t forget your kidsMany teens also feel pressure around Valentine’s Day — to be in a couple, find a date or have sex (whether or not they’re feeling ready).

The problem underscores a widely held consensus that Virginia’s mental health care system is in urgent need of reform, due to what Gov. Improving mental health care became a priority in the U.S. like never before as the pandemic brought new levels of isolation, fear and grief, in addition to pre-existing crises such as rising drug overdose deaths and the struggles burdening teen girls. Survey data from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that in 2022, about half of adults with any mental illness did not receive treatment. Elsewhere in the U.S., states' policy concerns and approaches to improving mental health care have varied. Mental health was listed as a budget priority in most states in an analysis by the National Association of State Budget Officers.

Now Carole, immersed in lesbian culture, was an evening law student intent on practicing civil rights law. I, an Easterner and twice-divorced mother, a doctoral student moonlighting as a community college teacher, wasn’t even aware a lesbian culture existed. Both activists talking civil rights and gender politics nonstop, we were madly, eagerly in love. Yet an unparalleled sweetness sings deep in the bones now after nearly half a century of committed love. But the impact of manufacturing a stainless steel cup is significant, so you really need to use that cup a lot to make it worthwhile. And you're replacing dozens or even hundreds of single-use cups with that one reusable mug," said Sandra Goldmark of Columbia University's Climate School. Of course, this gets even hairier when you consider that Stanley cups have peaked in trendiness, and are now the domain of middle schoolers. The takeaway — at least environmentally: one Stanley cup is good. Many Stanley cups … not so good.

NEW YORK (AP) — A 15-year-old accused of shooting a Brazilian tourist in the leg in Times Square Thursday night and then firing at a police officer was charged Saturday as an adult with two counts of attempted murder. The teen also faces assault and weapons possession charges stemming from the shooting that began in a sporting goods store and spilled out onto the streets of Midtown Manhattan. Police took the teen into custody Friday at a residential house that police believe may be linked to a family member in Yonkers. He is also considered a suspect in an armed robbery in the Bronx and a separate shooting in Times Square last month, police said. At a press conference announcing the arrest Friday evening, New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban said it was an “actual miracle” that no one was seriously injured in the shooting.

Jennifer Garner was on hand to honor the man of the hour, which felt right since the beloved film in which they costarred celebrates its 20th anniversary this spring. Garner joked that she “kicked off the Mark Ruffalo rom-com era,” and also rattled off the names of some of the other actresses who have played opposite Ruffalo including Jennifer Aniston, Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon. In the 2004 movie, Garner played a teen who wishes to be older and finds herself in the body of her 30-year-old self. “To work with you Mark is to love you, I don’t care what anyone says,” she said to laughs from those gathered.

Its advantage wasn’t lost on Netflix cofounder and former CEO Reed Hastings, who’s namechecked YouTube as a threat to Netflix. YouTube has become a media giant without Hollywood contentMany in media dismiss or overlook YouTube because it doesn’t look like a Hollywood player. Its TV business, YouTube TV, is a bundle of other people’s channels. And YouTube TV is now the fourth-largest pay-TV service in the country, with more than 8 million subscribers. The real threat is that Netflix and YouTube dominate and everyone else fights over a tiny slice of pie.

The mental health of children in the US has become a key concern in recent years. Leaders in youth health declared a national state of emergency in child and adolescent mental health in 2021, and US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has named youth mental health a key priority. And the effect these challenges have had on their mental health is devastating,” Murthy wrote in an advisory from 2021. But in those same years, only 20% of adolescents reported receiving mental health therapy and 14% reported taking prescription medication. While teens said they were most likely to use substances with friends, about half of teens have used drugs and alcohol alone, according to the new CDC study.

For family bedtime reading, we just started “Julie of the Wolves” by Jean Craighead George. Mostly I try to write books that I would enjoy reading myself. But more than a decade into this career, I would still rather spend my time writing than doing just about anything else. It has a lot to do with perspective, which is something we can cultivate if we’re intentional about it. Piecing together a bunch of random scenes until they become one coherent story, like building a complicated jigsaw puzzle.

Prosecutors alleged that the Crumbley parents willfully disregarded warning signs that their son was in crisis, did not heed concerns of school administrators, bought him a gun days before the shooting and failed to lock it up. Yet, research shows that even parents who think their guns are inaccessible to minors are mistaken. Distributed responsibilityMost parents want their children to be safe, yet many continue to enable household access to loaded guns. In fact, a recent study shows that states often loosened gun laws after mass shootings, especially states with Republican legislatures. This case opens the door for parents to be held legally accountable, and reminds all parents of their responsibilities when it comes to gun safety.

Shares of Meta (META) jumped more than 21% on the news of a quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share to be paid out on March 26 to shareholders of record as of February 22. This upswing plasters over potential harm to Meta stock after Zuckerberg, alongside other social media company heads, testified Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the risks their products pose to young people. Zuckerberg was pressed about internal Meta documents that suggested the company estimates the lifetime value of a teen user at $270, as well as Meta’s transparency regarding how its monetizes user data.
