A group of three people are on the hook for $500,000 to keep Rep. George Santos out of jail. On Thursday at noon Eastern Time, documents revealing the identities of the three people who paid the scandal-plagued congressman's $500,000 bond will be unsealed after US District Judge Joanna Seybert denied Santos' most recent appeal. The judge allowed Santos to walk free instead of going to jail ahead of trial on the condition that he stays in Washington, DC and New York, and agrees to a $500,000 bond. But in a highly unusual decision, the magistrate judge who imposed the bond allowed the identities of those bail sponsors to remain secret. One of the three people who originally agreed to sponsor the bond already dropped out, Murray said.

That is about $120 billion below the $1.59 trillion set out in the debt ceiling bill negotiated by Biden and McCarthy. The targets would maintain defense spending at the $866 billion level agreed in the debt ceiling legislation. "The debt ceiling bill set a ceiling, not a floor, for fiscal year 2024 bills. Lower spending levels could make it harder for the House to reach agreement with the Democratic-led Senate. Federal agencies could have to shut down if the two chambers are unable to agree to spending levels by October.

Much of the existing legislation addressing TikTok at the federal and state level has focused on bans of the app. Wednesday’s legislation, known as the Protecting Americans’ Data From Foreign Surveillance Act, does not identify TikTok by name. TikTok has faced criticism from US officials who say the company’s links to China pose a national security risk. Congress has made several attempts in recent months to address data transfers to foreign adversaries. In February, House lawmakers advanced a bill that would all but require the Biden administration to ban TikTok over national security concerns about the app.

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - A U.S. House of Representatives committee on Wednesday narrowly voted to raise the mandatory commercial pilot retirement age to 67 from 65. The pilot age proposal faces opposition from unions and an uncertain fate by a U.S. Senate committee, which will consider its version of the FAA measure on Thursday and does not currently include the pilot age hike. "Raising the pilot retirement age keeps experienced pilots -- particularly, captains -- in place," RAA said. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) opposed raising the retirement age and says it could cause airline scheduling and pilot training issues and require reopening pilot contracts. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg does not support raising the pilot retirement age.

Trump’s legal defense strategy is now entirely fused with his electoral one. His bid to regain the White House is no longer a mere political campaign but has now become about self-preservation. If Trump becomes the 2024 GOP nominee, the cloud of criminality could linger over the election until November next year. This potentially could cause havoc with Trump’s political schedule. The salience of Trump’s grievance campaign could become even more relevant in a general election.

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a Republican effort to censure Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat who played a leading role in the first impeachment of then-President Donald Trump in 2019. The Republican-controlled chamber defeated the motion by a vote of 225 to 196, with 20 Republicans joining 205 Democrats in opposition. Schiff is running for California's Senate seat in 2024 and sent a fundraising email based on Wednesday's censure move. Republican Representative Paul Gosar was censured in 2021 after he posted a cartoon video that showed him killing Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the first time the censure had been used in a decade. In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Schiff called the motion "not only a terrible misuse of House precedent and resources, but a clear attack on our constitutional system of checks and balances."

WASHINGTON, June 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department amended part of a statement to Congress in which it said Washington would invite Hong Kong's chief executive, who faces U.S. sanctions, to a November summit, after lawmakers urged he be barred from entering the country. The Unites States is set to host this year's gathering in San Francisco of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group, of which Hong Kong is a member economy. But Hong Kong's top official John Lee was placed under U.S. sanctions in 2020 over his role in implementing what Washington deems a "draconian" Hong Kong national security law. The Department regrets the error," a State Department spokesperson said. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday confirmed it had received the corrected response, which said the U.S. "has not made any commitments regarding invitations."

McCarthy called it a "grave injustice" and said that House Republicans "will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable." "God bless President Trump." Mr. Santos, a Republican representing Long Island and parts of Queens, is facing 13 felony counts including money laundering and wire fraud. A group of media organizations, including The New York Times, requested last month that the identities of the people who guaranteed Mr. Santos’s bail bond be unsealed. In a motion filed on Monday, Mr. Murray shared a response he wrote to the Ethics Committee’s questions about bail, in which he pointed to House ethics rules that permit gifts from family members. Mr. Murray said that he would not oppose a targeted unsealing that would confirm to the public and to House investigators that Mr. Santos’s guarantors were family members, without fully revealing their names or exact relationships to Mr. Santos. Though the suretors did not hand over actual money, they will be on the hook for the $500,000 if Mr. Santos flees prosecution.

Those hardliners were among the House Republicans who opposed McCarthy's election as speaker in January until he agreed to concessions that make it easy to challenge his leadership. They were also among the 71 Republicans who opposed the compromise debt ceiling legislation passed last week. McCarthy oversees a narrow House Republican majority of 222-213, meaning that he can lose only four votes from his own party on any measure that faces uniform opposition from Democrats. McCarthy endured 15 floor votes in January until he finally won the vote for speaker, agreeing to a set of demands that the hardliners now say he violated to pass the debt ceiling bill. Is it going to be through consensus, or is it going to be by fiat?” said Republican Representative Chip Roy.

U.S. Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene did not include a “nationwide pornography ban” in the debt ceiling bill, contrary to claims circulating online. Reuters found no evidence that Greene is currently taking steps to remove the Miller Test or establish a pornography ban. No major news outlets covering the debt ceiling negotiations (tinyurl.com/2kmmynxa) reported on this. On June 3, President Joe Biden signed a bill that suspends the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, averting what would have been its first-ever default (here). There is no evidence that Greene is planning to include a “nationwide pornography ban” in the debt ceiling bill.

It was one the president deployed once again behind closed doors at the White House. With Memorial Day on the horizon, senior White House officials said protecting veterans’ benefits was a top priority. They also knew it was a sensitive issue for Republicans’ politically, especially as House Republicans parried White House allegations about cuts to veterans’ services. White House officials would engage in conversations where their Republican counterparts would outline a potential resolution on issues. For months, White House officials hoped – and to some degree based on past battles, expected – Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would engage in finding a resolution.
