European markets are set to follow in the footsteps of their counterparts in Asia-Pacific, where markets were mostly higher overnight. The rally comes after global stock markets see-sawed last week with steep sell-offs followed by a sharp rebound. U.S. stock futures were lower as investors awaited key inflation data due later this week. In focus is the U.S. producer price index report for July, out Tuesday, followed by the country's latest consumer price index data on Wednesday, with investors looking for signs that price growth is stabilizing.

LONDON — European stocks closed higher on Friday as global equity markets looked to rebuild from the recent sell-off. Global markets have been volatile this week as they have tried to shake off Monday's rout. The initial sell-off was in part triggered by separate U.S. jobs data last week coming in weaker than expected. Both moves have led analysts to caution that markets may have outsize reactions to data releases and central bank commentary through August — typically a volatile month for stocks. Asia-Pacific markets were mostly higher on Friday.

Goldman Sachs has added a number of stocks to its lists of top picks for August. These lists are the bank's "curated and active" picks of between 15 and 30 top buy-rated stocks for each region. Goldman gave the stock a price target of 2,499 pence ($31.79), or about 34% upside. Goldman gave the stock a price target of 13.98 Hong Kong dollars ($1.79), or about 46% upside. Goldman gave the stock a price target of 125 Chinese yuan ($17.51), or nearly 61% upside.

Asia-Pacific markets extended gains on Wednesday, tracking Wall Street benchmarks that snapped a three-day losing streak overnight. It further sold 3.87 trillion yen worth of dollars on May 1, ministry data showed. Customs data showed on Wednesday that China's imports in July grew faster-than-expected, while export growth missed forecasts. Exports in U.S. dollar terms rose by 7% for the month compared to a year ago, missing economists' expectations for a 9.7% increase. Meanwhile, U.S. dollar-denominated imports rose by 7.2%, far more than the economist's forecast of 3.5%.

"Consumer sentiment in China is quite weak," McDonald's chairman, CEO and director Christopher Kempczinski, said of the quarter ended June 30. Apple said Greater China sales fell by 6.5% year-on-year in the quarter ended June 29. Procter and Gamble said China sales for the quarter ending late June fell by 9%. The only public disclosures regarding Peet's China business described it as "strong double-digit organic sales growth" in the first half of the year.
