Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of America’s gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the US economy, so a recession is nearly impossible as long as consumer spending is growing. Wednesday’s report is expected to be a good one — economists polled by FactSet expect that a strong holiday shopping season boosted consumer spending by 0.4% in December from the month prior. But new data from the New York Federal Reserve on Tuesday has soured the mood on Wall Street. The outlook for consumer spending doesn’t look so bright, either. The trend marked the deepening of a demographic challenge set to have significant implications on the world’s second largest economy, report my colleagues Laura He and Simone McCarthy.

Notably, the report suggested that inflation was not as powerful a force as it had been a few months back. These numbers point to a strong spring, especially with the Fed getting more dovish. “Both changes would support the economy and extend growth, but also likely weaken the US dollar,” Khurana says. Businesses are entering 2024 in a positive mood, according to Dun & Bradstreet’s quarterly Global Business Optimism index released on Tuesday. The National Association of Homebuilders’ sentiment index improved in January to its highest level since September.

The Ram Mandir's opening Monday would fulfill a decadeslong Hindu nationalist pledge that is expected to resonate with voters during the upcoming national election expected in April or May. The narrow roads have given way to four-lane pilgrim route, including the newly developed 13-kilometer (8-mile) Ram Path leading to the temple. At least two head priests from a Hindu sect have refused to go the opening ceremony, saying consecrating an unfinished temple goes against Hindu scriptures. And volunteers from Modi’s party and other Hindu nationalist groups are going door to door, distributing religious flags and pamphlets. Many others shared Bhatia's feelings about the temple's opening.

As much as January is a time for self-improvement, it can also be tough to stay motivated as the dead of winter sets in. Hygge can be practiced year-round to provide a serotonin boost through socializing, feeling sheltered and secure, enjoying indulgent foods and prioritizing rest. But it's something of a "survival strategy" in winter, says Wiking, who wrote the New York Times bestseller "The Little Book of Hygge." To that end, here are his three tips for harnessing hygge to stay happy and motivated despite the dreary winter season. Since then, he's made it a practice to get outside for an hour of daylight, even in winter.

"And Wilders took off in the polls.”In December, a member of Wilders' party became president of parliament, marking a breakthrough in political acceptance. There was one answer, he said, that would always be acceptable in his class filled with second-year students at the U.S. Military Academy. President Joe Biden, in his first campaign address of the year, warned about Trump's rhetoric on the military and its leadership. With cadets and midshipmen drawn from across the United States, students at West Point and other service academies are aware of the national mood and the potential for political divisions to seep into the military. At West Point, the Constitution and the oaths are not only embedded throughout the curriculum, they also permeate the campus. Avoiding it would not be an option, said Reeves, whose family ties to West Point date to the 19th century.

Incorporating breath work with a walking routine can increase the function of your breathing muscles so they won’t get tired as quickly. There’s no definitive statement of why (nasal breathing) is good,” he said. And don’t forget that other types of breath work beyond walking have health benefits, too. “There are no real side effects or downsides to breath work.

So far, I'm succeeding: In 2023, I averaged 10,632 steps a day, or just over 5 miles. But walking a lot can still improve your well-being: Just 4,000 steps per day reduces your risk of "all-cause mortality," according to a recent study. Certified nutritionist and longevity expert Michiko Tomioka, who herself aims for 10,000 steps a day, says that's "the most effective way [to get exercise]: Just take a walk." But to keep my body from complaining, I've had to invest in durable, supportive shoes, and quality doesn't come cheap. Opinion: A turning point in Ukraine
  + stars: | 2024-01-09 | by ( Opinion Michael Bociurkiw | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Last year, Ukraine passed legislation shifting its Christmas celebrations in line with many Western dates – a step to further distance itself from traditions commonly observed in Russia. As 2023 drew to a close, Russia launched the biggest air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. The intensity and frequency of the attacks — on the back of reports that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is stalling and that western backers of Ukraine are holding back billions in funding — marks a major turning point in the war. While it’s impossible to put an exact number on Ukrainian war losses, anyone who visits the military portion of the Lychakiv Cemetary in Lviv can see that its expanded to almost maximum capacity. Ukraine scored a big win last week when the EU approved sanctions against Russia’s largest diamond producer, Alrosa, and its CEO.

Spending remained high, markets posted big gains and the Federal Reserve's battle against inflation showed signs of cooling — without freezing. The U.S. labor market ended the year strong, creating more than 200,000 jobs in December, according to figures released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here are nine other charts that show how the economy rounded out 2023. Inflation, wages and spendingWhile inflation continues to be top of mind for U.S. consumers, the rate of inflation cooled significantly in 2023. Even assets such as crypto saw a rebound in 2023 after hitting a low in November of the previous year.

Holiday burnout is a term that describes "the mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion that someone can experience during or after the holiday season," Michelle Felder, founder and CEO of Parenting Pathfinders, told Insider. It's important to be proactive since burnout can lead to lasting changes in how your body responds to stress. For advice, I asked therapists about the signs of holiday burnout and what you can do to prevent it from ruining the festivities. With repeated and prolonged exposure to stress, your body has a harder time recovering from the fight or flight response. When you're constantly rushed, it can be challenging to "enjoy holiday activities and events that you used to look forward to," Appleton said.
