The envoy Zhai Jun, who is visiting the Middle East, said spillover effects in the region and internationally are widening, as conflict along the Israeli-Lebanese and Israeli-Syrian borders spread, "making the outlook worrisome". Israel on Friday announced the evacuation of Kiryat Shmona, a city of some 22,000 people close to the Lebanese border. On Thursday, three residents of Kiryat Shmona were injured when a barrage of rockets were launched toward Israeli military sites and towns from the Lebanese side of the border. The Israeli military launched airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon in retaliation. The rocket attacks on Kiryat Shmona were the first big hit on a major urban center in the north since the war began. Kiryat Shmona was repeatedly targeted by Hezbollah during the 2006 war with Israel.

CNN —Protests erupted around the Arab world on Friday as the Gaza war raged and an Israeli ground operation with the potential to displace millions of Palestinians loomed. In a sign of the growing anger over the Israeli operation in Gaza, Egypt sanctioned its first major nationwide protest in a decade. Amman and Cairo have sounded alarms over what they perceive as a plan to transfer Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank to Egypt and Jordan. The West Bank, however, remains occupied and the previous right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it would advance plans to extend its jurisdiction to the West Bank. The Palestinians want to establish an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza.

Explosions echoed from the hillsides overlooking Kiryat Shmona on Friday as residents of this city of 22,000 began to leave after Israeli authorities ordered its evacuation following escalating shelling from militants in Lebanon. The city’s streets were mostly quiet, with residents who hadn’t already left waiting for instructions and businesses closed down, save for a few restaurants supplying recently arrived soldiers with schnitzel, fish and pasta in tinfoil trays.

Israel on Friday ordered the evacuation of more than 20,000 residents from Kiryat Shmona, one of the biggest towns on its northern border following a heavy cross-border exchange of fire in the area the day before. Survival was uppermost in the minds of Lebanese civilians from the Lebanese village of Dhayra, west of Israel's Kiryat Shmona. Nissim Tsabaria, an elderly Israeli who walks with a stick, waved goodbye to neighbours as he clambered into his car. Local authorities on both sides of the border are hastily seeking accommodation for the growing numbers of refugees, who leave their homes in cars crammed with suitcases. Israel is putting its swelling ranks of evacuees in guest houses and hotels if they don't have families to stay with.
