Weeks after sticky black balls washed up on the famed beaches of Sydney, Australia, scientists say they have partly solved the mystery behind the “disgusting” blobs. Initially thought to be tar balls, the golf-ball-size debris turned out to be something much different — a combination of decomposed cooking oils, hair and food waste, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) said Wednesday. Balls collected for testing in a laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They said preliminary test results indicated that the blobs were tar balls formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water. Sydney Water confirmed there were no issues at the Bondi or Malabar water facilities, while Transport for NSW Maritime reviewed recent weather patterns but found no clear answers, according to the statement.

A police search is underway after 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday night. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, said the animals escaped from Alpha Genesis, a business that provides "nonhuman primate products and bio-research services," according to its website. It is also not known what trials the escaped monkeys were taking part in, nor whether they were exposed to any diseases. Alpha Genesis did not immediately respond to an overnight request for comment from NBC News. In 2022, three monkeys escaped following a traffic accident in rural Pennsylvania.

ET Wednesday showed large gender gaps for the candidates: Among men, who made up 47% of the electorate, Harris won 42% of the vote and Trump won 55%. Among women, who made up 53% of the electorate, 53% voted for Harris and 45% for Trump. Broken down by race and education, the gender gap showed even wider splits in some cases: An overwhelming 91% of Black women voted for Harris vs. 7% who voted for Trump, and 57% of college-educated white women voted for Harris vs. 41% who voted for Trump. But among white female non-college graduates, only 35% voted for Harris vs. 63% who voted for Trump. Mortgage ratesHousing affordability has been a major issue due in part to a sharp rise in mortgage rates since the pandemic. Trump has said he'll bring down mortgage rates — even though 15- and 30-year mortgage rates are fixed, and tied to Treasury yields and the economy. Mortgage rates are unlikely to fall significantly, given the current climate, explained Jacob Channel, senior economist at LendingTree. Federal student loan rates are fixed, so most borrowers won't be immediately affected. But refinancing a federal loan into a private student loan will forgo the safety nets that come with federal loans, such as deferments, forbearances, income-driven repayment and loan forgiveness and discharge options.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday proposed ending the use of a common ingredient found in many popular over-the-counter cold and allergy medications. The agency said an extensive review of available data determined that the ingredient, oral phenylephrine, doesn't actually relieve nasal congestion. The FDA said the proposed order is not based on safety concerns and not final yet, which means companies can still market over-the-counter drugs containing oral phenylephrine for now. Last year, CVS said it has already moved to pull certain medicines containing oral phenylephrine. The designation, typically used for older medicines, allows drugmakers to include an ingredient in over-the-counter products without the need to file an FDA application.

Long-term capital gains rates apply to assets owned for more than one year. Higher capital gains tax rates, however, are "entirely off the table," under a Trump presidency and Republican-controlled Congress, said Erica York, senior economist and research manager with the Tax Foundation's Center for Federal Tax Policy. Even with partial Republican control, "it's most likely that capital gains tax policy just stays put where it is," York explained. For 2024, investors pay long-term capital gains rates of 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on taxable income. Combined with long-term capital gains taxes, higher earners currently pay up to 23.8% on investments.

The striking 3D reconstruction of Zosia, as locals nicknamed her, sheds light on the human found in the grisly grave. Archaeologist Dariusz Poliński, who led the team that unearthed Zosia’s remains, said it was a “mind-blowing” moment when he saw the reconstruction by Swedish forensic artist Oscar Nilsson for the first time. During the course of the 17th century, Poland and Sweden fought a series of wars, so Zosia could have been an outsider within her community. “Maybe because of some misfortune or the death of somebody else, they decided to open the grave,” Poliński suggested. A year after discovering Zosia’s grave, the same team found a child’s remains buried in an unusual way.

There is a robust body of research on key differences in lifestyle that may contribute to differences in an aging brain. Adding a heart-healthy diet to your routine also can help slow brain aging and reduce dementia risk. “Those things may not exactly cause Alzheimer’s, but it can fast forward cognitive aging and fast forward cognitive decline.

Moderna this year also expects to apply for expanded approval of its RSV vaccine, targeting high-risk adults ages 18 to 59. Exercising at specific times of day could lower colorectal cancer risk, a new study found. Colorectal cancer rates have fallen since the '80s, but have risen in under-55s by 1 to 2% yearly since the mid-'90s. Previous studies have found that people who exercise regularly have a lower colorectal cancer risk than those who don't. After five years, 529 of the participants were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer.
