P & G's results Wednesday demonstrate that its recent outperformance compared with its staples peers is justified. Quarterly commentary Procter & Gamble delivered on key metrics such as gross margins and organic sales growth. Secondly, excluding declines in China, P & G's volume was up in the rest of the world. Consumers in Western Europe remain relatively resilient, Schulten said, while describing P & G's business in Latin America as "on fire." P & G paid out $2.3 billion in dividends in its fiscal first quarter while repurchasing $1.5 billion worth of common stock.

That’s why it’s a big deal when Social Security recipients receive their annual cost-of-living adjustment. Starting in January they’ll see a 3.2% increase in their Social Security checks, that’s a much smaller increase than the inflation-fueled boosts of the past two years, the Social Security Administration announced last week. David Certner: The Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is based on the Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners. The amount of GDP that’s generated by Social Security checks is actually larger than the total amount of Social Security money going out in the first place. Before the Bell: Could an increase in Social Security possibly add to inflation since that money is bolstering the economy?

Rite Aid files for bankruptcy
  + stars: | 2023-10-15 | by ( David Goldman | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
“It was always a matter of when, not if, Rite Aid would file for bankruptcy,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, in a note to investors. As part of the bankruptcy plan, Rite Aid appointed a new CEO, Jeff Stein, who will also serve as the head of restructuring and a board member. The government accused Rite Aid of missing “obvious red flags” when it filled the prescriptions for addictive pain killers. Rite Aid is a distant third-largest nationwide standalone pharmacy chain in the United States — and the seventh largest pharmacy overall, when taking into account big box chains. Ultimately, in 2017, the companies agreed to a smaller, $4.4 billion deal, in which Walgreens bought just under 2,000 Rite Aid locations, leaving Rite Aid diminished in stature and unable to compete at the scale of its bigger rivals.

Customer experience Costco has the "unique opportunity to drill into the buying habits of their individual members," Morningstar retail analyst Noah Rohr told CNBC in an interview. Rohr believes that generative AI advancements could be as simple as making promotional emails more relevant to each individual member. The retailer utilizing its large customer data sets is "a big advantage when it comes to inventory planning," Morningstar's Rohr said. Rohr said Costco can also optimize its data with AI by making sure store employees are using their time efficiently.

The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Viewed through the top-heavy rally lens, though, it's not a surprise to see a number of Club stocks underperforming the S & P 500.

Only 26% of those surveyed said the same of national brand groceries, such as Charmin, Tide or Frito-Lay. Private-label groceries at big-box and warehouse retailers — such as Target's Good & Gather and Costco's Kirkland Signature — have been slowly gaining favor with consumers, according to data from Morningstar. Fifty-one percent of those who plan to buy more store-brand groceries said they would do so because of taste and 47% said because of quality. Broadcom (AVGO), Caterpillar (CAT) and Eli Lilly (LLY) are among the 15 Club stocks with a streak of annual dividend growth that Wall Street expects to continue in their current fiscal years. Long-term investors should look to own companies with a history of dividend growth instead of chasing stocks with high yields, Morgan Stanley strategists said in a note to clients this week. However, Morgan Stanley's note made us curious to screen our portfolio for stocks with strong dividend growth track records that are expected to persist. To help us project which stocks will keep their dividend growth streaks alive, we also examined analyst estimates for total per-share payouts in their current fiscal year. Bottom line In any case, dividend growth over time is certainly welcome and can help increase total investment return, assuming the distributions are reinvested instead of taking cash.
