In recent years wildfires have regularly burned in and around Wrightwood, a picturesque mountain town 60 miles east of Los Angeles known for its 1930s cabins. In neighboring Orange County, firefighters used bulldozers, helicopters and planes to control a rapidly spreading blaze called the Airport Fire that started Monday and spread to about 3 square miles in only a few hours. Concialdi said the fire was burning away from homes in Orange County, but there are 36 recreational cabins in the area. Residents along the southern edge of Big Bear Lake were told to leave the area Tuesday night, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The blaze had charred more than 51 square miles of grass and brush and blanketed the area with a thick cloud of dark smoke.

Wall Street relationshipsOne of Vance's earliest interactions with Wall Street came shortly after the November 2016 presidential election, when he headlined a lunch in New York to discuss his newly published memoir. John Underwood, a longtime managing director at Goldman Sachs, encouraged his allies to support and raise money for Vance's Senate campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. He told them the Trump campaign would need "hundreds of millions of dollars" to compete with Vice President Kamala Harris' fundraising surge. The Ohio Republican's opposition to Wall Street was on full display during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July. "Wall Street barons crashed the economy and American builders went out of business," Vance said in his nomination acceptance speech.

When discussing immigration, Harris took a shot at Trump's rallies, saying that people leave them early " out of exhaustion and boredom ." Trump responded with his own attack about Harris' rallies, but his demeanor also took a noticeable turn for the remainder of the debate. And while the two candidates basically don't agree on anything, Harris took one page out of Trump's book. The vice president had some noticeable facial expressions during the debate , something the former president has been known for. The Harris campaign said following the debate the vice president would participate in another one in October .

When Bill Gates dropped out of college to co-found Microsoft, he wasn't thinking about becoming a billionaire or running a company that's now valued at more than $3 trillion. At the time, in 1976, computer obsessives like Gates and co-founder Paul Allen were considered "hobbyists" — yet they fervently believed that a technological revolution was imminent. And I was willing to focus my life, in my 20s, just on software, just on the one job," says Gates. Specifically, that job was creating high-quality software that could make the general public actually embrace the personal computer. That intense focus on creating the best product possible didn't mean Gates wasn't aware that there was also money to be made — in fact, he insisted upon it from the beginning.

Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, at the ECB And Its Watchers conference in Frankfurt, Germany, on March 20, 2024. Traders are widely anticipating an interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's Sept. 17-18 meeting, as well as at the ECB's meeting this week. "The rate cut this Thursday should be largely uncontroversial," Holger Schmieding, the chief economist at Berenberg Bank, told CNBC in an email to clients. In July, the ECB left interest rates unchanged in a unanimous vote following June's landmark cut. The ECB's key interest rate — which helps to price all sorts of loans and mortgages across the bloc — is currently at 3.75% after years of aggressive hikes.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump's advisors and allies scripted his playbook to attack Vice President Kamala Harris during the debate. Harris baited Trump, starting by distracting Trump from talking about his favorite issue of immigration by getting him stewing about crowd size. Harris talked about how the Wharton School of Finance, Trump's beloved alma mater, has published research questioning his economic plans. He clearly seemed annoyed at the ABC News debate moderators who repeatedly interrupted the debate to fact-check his false claims. Trump's team echoed those claims online, arguing that the former president had to take on Harris, Muir, and co-moderator Linsey Davis.

But more than half the global population isn’t eating enough of these and five other nutrients also crucial for human health, according to a new study. More than 5 billion people don’t consume enough iodine, vitamin E or calcium, found the study published August 29 in the journal The Lancet Global Health. Billions of people don’t consume enough of at least seven micronutrients present in hundreds of foods, according to a new study. For these reasons, the research team estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 15 micronutrients among 185 countries, or 99.3% of the population. “Therefore, iodine might be the only nutrient for which inadequate intake from food is largely overestimated,” the authors said, referring to their findings.
