The Bristol Myers Squibb research and development center at Cambridge Crossing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US, on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Yen under pressure as BOJ keeps rates steady

Japanese Yen and U.S. dollar banknotes are seen in this illustration taken March 10, 2023. The yen remained under pressure on Thursday as the Bank of Japan kept ultra-low interest rates steady, while the U.S. dollar consolidated ahead of jobs data later this week and the U.S. presidential election next week. The BOJ kept interest rates steady on Thursday and roughly maintained its forecast that inflation will hover near its 2% inflation target in coming years, signaling its readiness to continue rolling back its massive monetary stimulus. Analysts are divided over the prospect of additional interest rate hikes by year-end, putting the focus on BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda's post-meeting briefing for clues on the pace and timing of further increases. "Any strengthening of the yen at present would likely result from a general weakening of the U.S. dollar if interest rates begin to align," said Sean Teo, a sales trader at Saxo.

How Hermès is bucking the global luxury slowdown
  + stars: | 2024-10-31 | by ( Natalie Rice | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
French luxury company Hermès has spent nearly 200 years emphasizing quality, scarcity and desirability — a strategy that's helped it dominate the luxury sector, even over its much larger rivals. Analysts say the Birkin and the Kelly account for between 25% and 28% of Hermès' total revenue. For fiscal year 2023 Hermès reported the fourth-highest revenue total of the major luxury fashion brands, behind LVMH , Richemont and Kering . In its most recent quarter, Hermès posted double-digit revenue growth while competitors LVMH and Kering reported sharper-than-expected declines in sales. Globally, many luxury consumers have pulled back on spending, particularly aspirational buyers in 2023 and 2024.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday told investors not to get scared off when a company posts good earnings results but issues more modest guidance, as it doesn't always mean that management is worried about the future. "Some money managers are dumbfounded when a very good company reports a very good quarter but then issues a very conservative forecast," Cramer said. Sometimes, he said, it's worth it to hold on to a company with good earnings while others on Wall Street panic about guidance. For the current quarter, Microsoft predicted revenue between $68.1 billion and $69.1 billion, while analysts surveyed by LSEG were hoping for $69.83 billion. Despite the disappointing guidance, Cramer was appeased by management's explanation for the weaker guidance, particularly commentary from CFO Amy Hood.

"I think we've proven over time that we can drive enough operating income and free cash flow to make this a very successful return on invested capital business," Jassy said. "We expect the same thing will happen here with generative AI." The jump in spending is primarily being driven by generative AI investments, Jassy said. Currently, more than 80% of India's energy needs are met by coal, oil and solid biomass, according to the International Energy Agency. On the demand side, the Indian government has aggressively pushed policies that favor vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), a derivative of liquified natural gas (LNG). Meanwhile, the number of households that could receive piped natural gas is more than 300 million. For instance, natural gas is a crucial ingredient for making fertilizers, and manufacturing it domestically helps increase food security. Seth is also optimistic about India's growth rate for its third and fourth quarters despite slower capital expenditure in some states.

Wall Street's bullish sentiment on Microsoft hasn't faded, even after the tech giant forecast disappointing revenue growth numbers. The company's revenue increased 16% year over year in the quarter, and its net income rose 11% during the period compared to the year-ago quarter. That forecast led shares to slip nearly 4% in premarket trading, despite the company's strong earnings performance. That would be the company's fastest ever AI-related revenue growth rate. Amazon's online advertising business brought in $14.3 billion in the third quarter, up 19% year over year, in line with analysts' estimates of $14.3 billion. The Seattle tech giant revealed the financial results of its growing advertising unit as part of its latest earnings report Thursday. Amazon's overall third-quarter sales were $158.9 billion, ahead of analysts' estimates of $157.2 billion. The U.S. economy posted another solid though slightly disappointing period of growth in the third quarter, propelled higher by strong consumer spending that has defied expectations for a slowdown. The economy accelerated at a 3% pace in the second quarter. Personal consumption expenditures, the proxy for consumer activity, increased 3.7% for the quarter, the strongest performance since Q1 of 2023. The release comes with the Federal Reserve poised to lower inflation rates further despite the seemingly strong economy and inflation that remains above target, though far from its peak in mid-2022. Markets widely expect the Fed to cut another quarter percentage point off its benchmark short-term borrowing rate when policymakers conclude their two-day meeting on Nov. 7.

It is clear what Russia stands to gain from an influx of some 10,000 North Korean troops to aid its war in Ukraine. North Korean troops are expected to help with that.
