Russian forces encircled Mariupol within days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, before launching a months-long bombardment to break down a stubborn Ukrainian military resistance. The city, which lies on the Sea of Azov in Ukraine’s southeast, saw some of the most intense and vicious fighting of the war. Even as fighting for the city raged, concerns were rife that Moscow’s forces could conceal evidence of possible war crimes in the city. FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The Dutch parent of pioneering Russian tech company Yandex is selling its operations in the country at a steeply discounted price of just over $5 billion to its Russia-based managers and oil company Lukoil, one of the biggest deals for Western-held companies to exit Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. He subsequently condemned Russia's invasion as “barbaric.” The Nasdaq exchange suspended trading in Yandex shares days after the invasion. After the sale, Yandex NV would be left with its international businesses — employing 1,300 people — including self-driving technology and generative artificial intelligence as well as a data center in Finland. Yandex NV Chairman John Boynton said the company had faced “exceptional challenges” since the start of the war. None of the purchasers have been sanctioned, Yandex NV said, and the cash part of the transaction would be conducted in Chinese yuan outside of Russia.

VINA DEL MAR, Chile (Reuters) - Among the mountains of debris left over from raging wildfires that have killed more than 120 people in Chile are lost dogs and cats, wandering the streets covered in ash and burns. Christopher Romero, 22, was out buying groceries when the fire struck his home in Vina del Mar on Friday. He says his father was able to get his family to safety but their two dogs, Black and Kiara, fled into the night. Nicolas Escobar, the university's veterinary director, said the clinic has attended to more 100 dogs, cats and rabbits since Friday, treating burns, giving oxygen and even reviving some of them. He said the clinic has also been helping track down owners of lost pets through social media or by scanning microchips.

(AP) — A second defendant has pleaded guilty to federal charges in connection with a series of drive-by shootings at the homes of state and local lawmakers in Albuquerque after the 2022 election, the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday. Demetrio Trujillo pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy, election interference and firearms-related charges, officials said. Raul Bujanda, special agent in charge of the FBI Albuquerque field office, announced the developments in a news release. Demetrio's son Jose Louise Trujillo previously pleaded guilty to illegal use of a firearm in connection with the shootings, as well as fentanyl possession with the intent to distribute. No one was injured, but in one case bullets passed through the bedroom of a state senator’s 10-year-old daughter.

Meta — The technology stock soared more than 14% after posting better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings of $5.33 per share on revenue of $40.11 billion. That exceeded the earnings of $4.96 per share on $39.18 billion in revenue LSEG had expected. Deckers' revenue of $1.56 billion also surpassed the $1.45 billion LSEG had forecast. Skechers is calling for 2024 revenue of $8.6 billion to $8.8 billion and earnings of $3.65 to $3.85 per share. ☆ South London attack: Children among 9 injured from suspected corrosive substance in Clapham district

CNN —London police are searching for a man suspected of throwing a corrosive substance on multiple victims including a woman and two children in a “horrific incident” on Wednesday night. In a statement, Metropolitan Police said the suspect was seen fleeing the scene in south London’s Clapham district following the attack. Nine people were wounded, including three adults who helped the initial victims and three responding police officers who were hospitalized with minor injuries, police said. “We will update as soon as we know more about their conditions,” Detective Superintendent Alexander Castle said in a statement. Castle said an investigation had been opened and tests were ongoing to determine what the suspected corrosive substance was.
