When Domonique Brown was little, she and her dad could only buy greeting cards featuring Black people at a single Hallmark store in Upland, California. Across all mediums and materials, her designs primarily feature Black characters and aim to represent the Black experience, she says. Her business, still a side hustle, outearns her 9-to-5 job: She's a full-time graphic designer with a $90,000 annual salary, she says. Brown typically spends two hours per day maintaining customer relations and creating content for DomoINK and, when inspiration strikes, creating new work, she says. At every stop, art has offered her a reprieve from schoolwork, unfulfilling jobs or people who told her to make more "white art," Brown says.

The natural-parenting movement, like the anti-vaccine movement, relies on our forgetfulness about what life was like before the innovations that it denounces. Also like the anti-vaccine movement, the natural-parenting movement is a reaction to very real failures in our medical system, which has more than earned people’s distrust. Natural parenting has since been thoroughly secularized, but it still preaches something akin to spiritual transcendence through female sacrifice. Even if you distrust the natural-parenting movement, its pressures are hard to escape. If the natural-parenting movement really cared about children, it would do some introspection about how often it makes their parents miserable.

Don’t Tell My Friends, But… is a seriesin which we asked Times columnistswhateveryone else is wrong about. On its face, there’s nothing necessarily political about the mantra that the customer is always right. But the idea that the customer is always right also contains a worldview, a kind of market fundamentalism that typifies much of the American right today. The problem starts when our decisions aren’t merely subjective — that is, when questions of truth, moral or factual, are involved. Students today, whose parents often pay fortunes for their education, are treated like valuable customers, not lowly apprentices.

I want to retire early, so I asked a financial planner what mistakes I should watch out for. In an effort to get on track, I chatted with certified public accountant and certified financial planner Ryan Nelson about the most common mistakes people make when they attempt to retire early. He advised people to proactively calculate the cost of health insurance during early retirement before reaching Medicare age, which is currently 65. "Look into private marketplace options, whether individual health insurance plans, health sharing ministries, or short-term health insurance plans to see how much these could cost." Not maximizing health savings account contributionsFor those planning to retire early, Nelson also recommend that they maximize their health savings account contributions.

Don’t Tell My Friends, But… is a seriesin which we asked Times columnistswhateveryone else is wrong about. At worst, it is hypocrisy, a clear felony compared with my misdemeanor hypocrisy. But I understand the appeal of calling out what looks like hypocrisy when we see it, especially now. To give hypocrisy a pass, one might argue, is to slide down a slope toward having no principles at all. In these merciless political times we should focus our minds on the true betrayals that really matter.

CNN —Two suits, two women, one message: “Hotties for Harris.” At least that was the phrase scrawled across banners at Kamala Harris’ campaign rally in Atlanta Tuesday night. Minutes later, Harris walked onto her podium to rapturous applause — also in a blue pantsuit. From being endorsed by Charli XCX and co-opting the album of the summer, “Brat,” to capitalizing on the 32.3 million-strong fandom of Megan Thee Stallion, her advisors have been honing in on the 18-27 demographic. Kamala Harris' icy blue suit seemed twinned in a way with Megan's cropped version. It’s hard to picture Clinton signing off on a decision to have Megan Thee Stallion “shake cheeks,” as one fan on Instagram wrote, in a cropped suit at a rally.

Place de la Concorde, Paris CNN —Triumph and tragedy are everywhere you look at the Olympics, and the men’s BMX park final on Wednesday had a surfeit of both. Martin crashed on both of his runs, his title defense wilting in the Paris heat, while Jeanjean recovered superbly on his second run to take a hard-earned bronze medal. As for the triumph, take José Torres Gil, the Argentinian rider who won his country’s first individual gold medal in a cycling discipline with a stunning initial score of 94.82. Great Britain’s Keiran Reilly took silver after packing trick after trick into his second run, hauling himself above Jeanjean with the final act of the competition. “It’s not easy at all when you’ve been training day-in, day-out for a year and you fall on the first trick, the first run,” Jeanjean said.

Cats vs. Dogs? Cats Are Better. - The New York Times

It’s not easy not being a dog person. I once moderated a conversation for The Times between Susan Orlean and Julie Klam, both authors of books about dogs. “Everybody who reads my book is a dog person,” Klam, whom I also profiled for her memoir, “You Had Me at Woof,” said at one point. The very bad date in the story “Cat Person” has, of course, two cats. By contrast, I could see the appeal of dogs if they didn’t need to be trained, didn’t bark, didn’t need to be walked, didn’t shed, didn’t smell, didn’t require washing or grooming.
