Asia-Pacific markets opened higher on Monday after a roller-coaster week that saw steep sell-offs followed by a sharp recovery, especially in Japan stocks. Futures for benchmark U.S. indexes were lower as investors awaited key inflation data due later this week. Major Wall Street averages rose Friday, with the indexes making a sharp recovery from last week's volatile market rout. Adani Group companies shed as much as $19 billion in market value on Monday after Hindenburg Research accused the Indian market regulator probing the group of having links to offshore funds also used by Adani. Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports were among the biggest losers on India’s blue-chip Nifty 50 index. Total losses in Adani companies narrowed to $9 billion after the early plunge. In May, six Adani Group companies disclosed they had received notices from SEBI alleging violation of Indian stock market rules. Alongside the inquiry into the Adani group, SEBI sent a "show cause" notice to Hindenburg Research alleging that the short-seller violated the country's rules by setting up a short-bet using non-public information. Hindenburg Research said these allegations were "nonsense" in a note published on its website in July, which also made public the regulator's notice. In its latest report, Hindenburg attempts to draw a link between offshore funds that traded in Adani Group shares and personal investments of Buch and her husband. It says that Bermuda-based Global Opportunities Fund, which according to a Financial Times investigation was used by entities connected to the Adani group to trade in share of group companies, had sub-funds.

The Food and Drug Administration’s “hands-off approach” to food additives, including those found in ultraprocessed foods and energy drinks, may allow unsafe ingredients to enter the nation’s food supply, according to the authors of an editorial published Thursday. While food manufacturers can request an FDA review of new ingredients before they are added to products — and they sometimes do — they are not required to do so. From 1990 to 2010, an estimated 1,000 substances were labeled GRAS by manufacturers and were used without notifying the agency, Pomeranz said, citing earlier research. Since then, she added, there have likely been many more ingredients added to the nation’s food supply without the FDA’s oversight. “We have no idea how many substances are in the food supply based on this self-GRAS mechanism,” Pomeranz said.

Female athletes of color have historically faced disproportionate scrutiny and discrimination when it comes to sex testing and false accusations that they are male or transgender. Since the Tokyo Games in 2021, track’s World Athletics tightened the eligibility rules for female athletes with DSD conditions. Male athletes are not required to regulate their natural levels of testosterone, and female athletes who do not have DSD conditions also can benefit. In this dysfunction, boxing eligibility rules have not kept pace with other sports, and the issues weren’t addressed ahead of the Paris Games. She challenged track and field’s initial testosterone rules passed in 2011 as a reaction to Semenya.

The wrestler from Team India, who on Tuesday became the first woman from her country to make the Olympic finals, will not be participating in the women’s wrestling 50kg gold-medal match due to being "a few grams" over the weight class, according to the Indian Olympic Association. The Indian Olympic Association didn’t elaborate on the matter and requested privacy for Phogat. In a January 2023 letter, the group accused Singh of sexual harassment against several young female wrestlers.
