AdvertisementAdvertisementAI is undermining the web's grand bargain, and a decades-old handshake agreement is the only thing standing in the way. Now, though, generative AI and large language models are changing the mission of web crawlers radically and rapidly. Without a supply of potential consumers, there's little incentive for content creators to let web crawlers continue to suck up free data online. It's also open to manipulation, especially given the voracious appetite for quality AI data. Because robots.txt is voluntary, web crawlers can also simply ignore the blocking instructions and siphon the information from a site anyway.

The researchers behind the SemiAnalysis blog say Google's upcoming AI Gemini smashes GPT-4. That might explain OpenAI boss Sam Altman's defensive response to a post published over the weekend titled : "Google Gemini Eats The World – Gemini Smashes GPT-4 By 5X, The GPU-Poors." Gemini is a next-gen, multimodal AI model being worked on by researchers at Google's AI arm DeepMind, and is expected to be released later in 2023. In response, SemiAnalysis' Patel posted on X that he got data on Google's GPU stores from a supplier of Google — rather than Google itself. But to say Gemini Smashes GPT-4 by 5x makes it sound like it is 5x better than GPT-4, it's not, its 5x compute.

OpenAI on Monday announced its biggest news since ChatGPT's debut: It's launching ChatGPT Enterprise, the AI chatbot's business tier, available starting Monday. ChatGPT Enterprise includes access to GPT-4 with no usage caps, performance that's up to two times faster than previous versions, and API credits. One key differentiator between ChatGPT Enterprise and the consumer-facing version: ChatGPT Enterprise will allow clients to input company data to train and customize ChatGPT for their own industries and use cases, although some of those features aren't yet available in Monday's debut. When asked how ChatGPT Enterprise compares with Bing Chat Enterprise, Microsoft's enterprise AI chatbot, an OpenAI representative told CNBC, "This is an OpenAI product independent of Microsoft. Study finds that ChatGPT provided false information when asked to design cancer treatment plans. The chatbot mixed correct and incorrect information together, making it harder to decipher. Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital – a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts – found that cancer treatment plans generated by OpenAI's revolutionary chatbot were full of errors. In contrast, 2.9% of jobs in high-income countries held by men — or around 9 million jobs — face the potential of being automated, as shown in the graf below. About a quarter of clerical workers' tasks face a high exposure to generative AI, and 58% of their tasks face a medium exposure to the technology. ChatGPT has drawn users at a feverish pace and spurred Big Tech to release other AI chatbots. But ChatGPT, the latest in technology known as "large language model tools," doesn't speak with sentience and doesn't "think" the way people do. Other tech companies like Google and Meta have developed their own large language model tools, which use programs that take in human prompts and devise sophisticated responses. Other researchers seem to be taking more measured approaches with generative AI tools. That's all according to a Thursday report from researchers at Arthur AI, a machine learning monitoring platform. AI hallucinations occur when large language models, or LLMs, fabricate information entirely, behaving as if they are spouting facts. Meta's Llama 2, on the other hand, hallucinates more overall than GPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude 2, researchers found. In a second experiment, the researchers tested how much the AI models would hedge their answers with warning phrases to avoid risk (think: "As an AI model, I cannot provide opinions"). "Making sure you really understand the way the LLM performs for the way it's actually getting used is the key."
