Read previewLast September, New York City began enforcing its strict new regulations on short-term rentals. Since then, the number of legal short-term rentals listed on Airbnb and other platforms has plummeted. Impacts of the near-banLL18 was motivated by the city's housing affordability crisis, caused in large part by a severe housing shortage. Short-term rentals, including Airbnbs, can take homes that would otherwise be lived in full-time off the market, potentially exacerbating the housing shortage. But there's some evidence, including from Irvine, California, that restricting short-term rentals can reduce rents.

Is New York Prepared for a Bird Flu Pandemic?
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Joseph Goldstein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Four years after a new coronavirus swept through New York in what was called a once-in-a-century event, public health officials are beginning to prepare for the possibility that a far worse pandemic is on its way. The bird flu virus, H5N1, is not spreading among people. But the city is already preparing as if it could. One New York City hospital system is taking steps to start testing its sewage for the virus, so that it will know if bird flu is silently circulating among patients and staff. But some epidemiologists worry that once again, the public health response in New York will be too sluggish in the early phases, should an epidemic break out in the city.

CNN —A hotel in the Japanese city of Kyoto allegedly canceled an Israeli tourist’s reservation because of “war crimes,” drawing criticism from local officials who said it violated regulations. The traveler who received the Whatsapp messages made an initial complaint to the Israeli embassy in Tokyo. The Israeli embassy says it would appreciate an apology from the hotel but will not pursue any legal action over the allegation. Barcelona ending apartment rentals by foreign tourists
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The city’s leftist mayor, Jaume Collboni, said that by November 2028, Barcelona will scrap the licenses of the 10,101 apartments currently approved as short-term rentals. The boom in short-term rentals in Barcelona, Spain’s most visited city by foreign tourists, means some residents cannot afford an apartment after rents rose 68% in the past 10 years and the cost of buying a house rose by 38%, Collboni said. Local governments have announced restrictions on short-term rentals in places such as Spain’s Canary Islands, Lisbon and Berlin in the past decade. Vacation rentals platform Airbnb, which hosts a significant number of Barcelona listings, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Collboni is making a mistake that will lead to (higher) poverty and unemployment,” Barcelona’s tourist apartments association APARTUR said in a statement, adding the ban would trigger a rise in illegal tourist apartments.

More than 1,300 people died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, Saudi authorities announced Sunday. All but 31 of them were unauthorized pilgrims, according to two officials in Cairo. Egypt has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said. Those agencies left pilgrims in limbo in Mecca and the holy sites in scorching heat, the newspaper said. AP journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat, especially on the second and third days of the Hajj.

Barclays' Consumer Spend research found that Swift's tour is expected to boost the UK economy by £997 million ($1.26 billion). Economist George Moran told the Times, however, that he thinks it's unlikely Swift will impact decision-making at the Bank of England.

High-end gyms are no longer just places to sweat it out. The most exclusive ones offer not only state-of-the-art equipment, exercise classes and spacious locker rooms with cold eucalyptus-scented towels and fancy soaps but also “third places,” locations outside home and work where people can mingle and socialize. The gym also hosts events, like author talks and creative classes and workshops, for members. Nearby, the high-end gym Equinox opened a hotel in 2019 in Hudson Yards, and has plans for more hotels in North America, Europe and the Middle East. A Life Time Work membership includes gym access and will cost you a couple of hundred dollars to thousands per month, depending on what kind of workspace you want and the location.

Are We Loving Our Pets to Death?
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( Linda Baker | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pets are more popular than ever. The pet population in India hit 31 million in 2021, up from 10 million in 2011. And our pets are becoming ever more like us — or at least, that seems to be our goal. Now some animal welfare ethicists and veterinary scientists are wondering if, in our efforts to humanize our pets, we’ve gone too far. The more we treat pets like people, they argue, the more constrained and dependent on us our pets’ lives have become, and the more health and behavioral issues our pets develop.

“The industry is evolving,” says Desmond Cawley, hotel manager at SIRO, One Za’abeel. This kind of light therapy treatment has its roots in NASA’s experimentation with red light therapy in the 1990s to boost plant growth in space and help heal wounds in astronauts. Rebecca Cairns/CNNEven at SIRO, with all its cutting-edge tech, Cawley has observed a surge of interest in mindfulness activities like meditation. Of course, at SIRO, there’s even a high-tech alternative to this: “vibroacoustic therapy,” the sci-fi equivalent of a gong bath. Tech to help you disconnect might seem excessive, but for SIRO, the integration of health data is the future of wellness, providing guests with a data-driven, personalized wellness program.

One of Europe’s most prominent economists is acutely aware that the singer is spending the summer jetting between Europe’s stadiums. Philip Lane, the chief economist at the European Central Bank, had the pop star on his mind when he spoke at an event on Monday. “You managed to say all that without saying Taylor Swift.”Ms. Swift is touring Europe this summer, bringing in her wake hundreds of thousands of Swifties spending on airfare, hotels, restaurants and friendship bracelets.

That suggests the Bank of England won’t follow the European Central Bank in cutting interest rates when it meets Thursday. A rate cut in August, when UK policymakers meet next, is now also less likely. Other economists, including analysts at Nomura, thought an August rate cut was still possible if pay rises and the price of services cooled further. “For an August rate cut, we will need other economic news to play ball,” the analysts wrote in a note.
