  + stars: | 2023-01-19 | by ( Michael Sheetz | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. After ending on a bit of a downer ("A year to forget for space stocks"), I'm entering 2023 with what feels like contrarian optimism. The space industry is chock full of opportunities and milestones to look forward to over the next twelve months, as the market for 21st century space companies continues to evolve and mature. Here are the top three space business news items I'm watching for and, shocker, all three are about getting to orbit. Space companies that are beyond the development phase and are expanding could distinguish themselves with investors as a discounted opportunity in a shifting market.
At the time, four years after the handover from Britain to China, much of Hong Kong remained a world of neon and noise. "Five years ago, everyone looked down on you if you spoke Mandarin," said a Beijing executive living in Hong Kong. As soon as the Hong Kong Arts Festival ended, the Hong Kong International Film Festival began. In February 2006, Alex Ma, China's mole in the FBI, sent David photos he received from his handlers of five suspected human sources. Born in Hong Kong like Alex, Lee grew up in Hawaii and became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

M&S's move shows the continuing importance of physical stores to retailers despite the rise of online shopping over the last two decades. Last October, M&S set out plans to accelerate what it calls its store rotation programme, delivering what was an initial five-year plan within three years by 2025-26. "Our store rotation programme is about making sure we have the right stores, in the right place, with the right space," said Machin. Twelve new M&S food halls are also planned. In addition to its owned store investment, M&S plans to extend its franchise model to expand its convenience stores offer, building on partnerships with BP, Moto, SSP and Costa.

Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and Kyiv's other allies condemned Saturday's Russian attacks. "More security assistance is coming to help Ukraine defend itself," Brink said on Twitter, calling the strike on Dnipro "horrifying." In Soledar, where Russian forces have refocused attacks after failing to take the larger nearby centre of Bakhmut, Ukraine insisted that its forces were battling to hold the town. But officials acknowledged the situation was difficult, that street fighting was raging and Russian forces were advancing from various directions.

The PBOC manages liquidity by extending loans to banks under its one-year medium-term lending facility (MLF). Twelve analysts expected the central bank to replace that debt exactly with 700 billion yuan of new lending, and 10 expected it to go further and lend a greater amount. A great majority - 21 traders and analysts - expected the MLF interest rate to stay unchanged at 2.75% this month, while the remaining four respondents expected a small rate cut. Markets still expect some monetary policy easing measures to support economic recovery, including cuts to policy rates and the amount of cash that banks must set aside as reserves. "The PBOC will likely cut interest rates soon to aid the expected economic recovery this year."

Opening arguments kicked off Monday in the federal trial of Sayfullo Saipov, the Uzbek immigrant who in 2017 plowed a rented pickup truck on a New York City bike path, killing eight people in its path of destruction. The Oct. 31 attack was the deadliest terrorist attack in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001. Police said Saipov, then 29, was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group, or ISIS, in launching the attack. How the attack unfoldedIn the attack, Saipov rented a white Home Depot pickup truck in Passaic, New Jersey, and drove it into Manhattan where the streets were filling up with Halloween festivities. Investigators later found a note that Saipov left in the truck, claiming the attack was in the name of ISIS.
I had no idea that true evil was genuinely watching them,” Alivea Goncalves, 26, sister of victim Kaylee Goncalves, 21, said in an interview with NewsNation on Sunday. "That’s really difficult, it’s really difficult, not to wish that you had done more and wish that you had known more." A private security officer sits in a vehicle on Jan. 3 in front of the house in Moscow, Idaho, where four University of Idaho students were killed in November. It's unclear if Alivea was there, but she told NewsNation she plans to be at "every single" hearing throughout the case. In a previous interview with NBC's “TODAY,” Alivea Goncalves called her sister “the ultimate go-getter.”
A group of 20 ultra-conservative Republicans continues to stonewall his leadership ambitions. More than half denied the 2020 election result and a handful are mentioned in the now-dissolved January 6 committee's report. But several of the political personalities at the heart of that attack are the same ones now holding the speakership hostage. All three lawmakers denied allegations that they were involved in planning the event. Meanwhile, the FBI seized the phone of Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania in August of last year.
Jan 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. bankruptcy judge ruled on Wednesday that Celsius Network owns most of the cryptocurrency that customers deposited into its online platform, meaning most Celsius customers will be last in line for repayment in the crypto lender's bankruptcy. The ruling means that most Celsius customers will be lower priority than customers who held non-interest bearing accounts and other secured creditors. Celsius' terms of service made clear that the crypto lender took ownership of customer deposits into its interest-bearing Earn accounts, according to Glenn. That means that Earn customers will be treated as unsecured creditors in Celsius' bankruptcy, and they will be last in line for repayment after Celsius repays higher-priority debts. The ruling authorizes Celsius to sell approximately $18 million stablecoins that had been held in customers' Earn accounts.

Greg Smithies leads the biggest fund focused on the decarbonization of real estate. Smithies has worked on sustainability issues and with Elon Musk's The Boring Company. But Smithies is no stranger to investment-led decarbonization efforts, having tackled the problem for much of his career. "At the end of the day, software isn't going to solve the climate crisis," Smithies said. But above all, he's focused on the money and the potential savings that low-carbon technology can have on real estate.

If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”This erroneous perspective of the right against compelled self-incrimination forgets a lot of history. She then invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer any questions from members of the committee. They argued that by making an opening statement in which she professed her innocence, Lerner had waived her Fifth Amendment rights. The Fifth Amendment applies in any legal proceeding. ‘Women Talking’ Review: Speaking Without Saying Much

‘Women Talking” begins in the gruesome aftermath of a hideous mass rape and a question being urgently discussed among a group of women victims: What to do about it? “What follows is an act of female imagination,” a portentous caption informs us at the outset of this impassioned and scathing film. A sort of #MeToo reworking of “Twelve Angry Men,” “Women Talking” takes place mostly in a barn in which the female members of an ultra-conservative religious sect (suggesting Mennonites) are holding a vote to decide among three options. One is to stay and do nothing, but this will require publicly forgiving the men (currently being prosecuted by government authorities) who attacked them. The second is to start a physical battle with the men as a group for enabling the rapists.

An era of ultra-easy cash from central banks lured investors into private credit, attracted by juicy returns in the high-single to low-double-digits. The private debt market has expanded to $1.4 trillion, up from $250 billion in 2010, according to data provider Prequin, with funds including Ares, Blackstone (BX.N) and KKR (KKR.N) holding big positions. Corporate default risks are rising, making investors think twice about holding riskier private debt. A Private Credit Default Index by law firm Proskauer showed a default rate of 1.56% on U.S. dollar-denominated deals in the third quarter, the first notable increase over the past 18 months. "While the default rate is likely to go up, I wouldn't expect to see a significant spike in 2023," he added.

LUSAIL, Qatar–The World Cup final will take place on Sunday in a giant golden basket of a stadium, located in the middle of a futuristic, $45 billion city called Lusail. Twenty years ago, the entire city was no more than a pile of sand.
