Read previewIn a Monday blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman argued that massive investment in AI infrastructure is key to market dominance — and avoiding global conflict. "If we don't build enough infrastructure, AI will be a very limited resource that wars get fought over, and that becomes mostly a tool for rich people." Representatives for OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. He noted that data centers consume tons of water for their cooling systems — some of which evaporates, so it cannot be reused. "Any human endeavor that involves an optimization challenge can be made more efficient through artificial intelligence," Coglianese said.

Propagandists in China, Iran and Russia are using artificial intelligence to create content designed to deceive Americans ahead of the November presidential election, federal intelligence officials said Monday. In a conference call about foreign election interference efforts organized by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, officials said the U.S. intelligence community has concluded that AI has made it easier to create disinformation, but has not fundamentally changed the way those actors operate. “The IC considers AI a malign influence accelerant, not yet a revolutionary influence tool. In other words, information operations are the threat, and AI is an enabler,” said one ODNI official, referring to the U.S. intelligence community. Gold prices steadied on Tuesday after surging to a record high in the previous session, following broadly dovish comments from U.S. Federal Reserve officials and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Bullion hit a record high of $2,635.29 on Monday. "Gold prices continue to be well-supported amid a series of dovish Fed rhetoric overnight," said IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong. At risk of collapsing before the year is out, the new lineup will have to do a delicate dance with the far right in order to survive. By pandering to the right, Macron hopes his government can safeguard his legacy after the left pledged to repeal some of his key policies, such as controversial pension reforms. New faces include veteran conservative Bruno Retailleau at the interior ministry whose hardline stance on immigration appeals to the far right. The president – a former left-wing minister – is now beholden to the support of the far right. Yet in this summer’s snap election, they are the very group Macron tried to keep out of government through his party’s “cordon sanitaire” voting alliance with France’s left.

Self-compassionate touch, which can be practiced anywhere, can include stroking the upper arms like a hug. Milko/E+/Getty ImagesThe study showed a single 20-second session of self-compassionate touch significantly reduced stress, increased kindness to the participant and improved mental well-being. However, Hafeez noted that while self-compassionate touch showed similar mental health benefits to long-term therapy, it is not a complete substitute for it — especially among those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Instead, she advised people to think of self-compassionate touch as an added tool for their mental health toolbox. The study results showed the more people make self-compassionate touch a habit, the greater the mental health benefits.

Two of Walz’s false claims are related to Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation think tank’s detailed right-wing blueprint for the next Republican administration. Project 2025 has been the subject of multiple false or misleading claims from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign this summer. Project 2025 does not propose to make people register with any federal agency when they get pregnant. TikTok has banned all political advertising on the app since 2019, but that hasn’t stopped advertisers from running what appear to be paid political messages on the platform. According to TikTok, the company does “not allow ads featuring political content across any of our monetization features, including paid ads, creators being paid to make branded political content, and other promotional tools on the platform.”TikTok stands apart among its big tech peers in banning political ads — Facebook, Instagram, X and Google all allow political advertisements. The continued presence of political ads on TikTok illustrates the difficulties in patrolling its own platform just weeks ahead of the 2024 presidential election and amid the court proceedings over its potential ban. The findings come as recent research shows that political ads on social media platforms are often filled with misinformation. There were no obvious signs of misinformation among the TikTok videos NBC reviewed.
