CNN —The Portland Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current to win the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League championship on Saturday. The 2-0 victory at the Audi Field in Washington DC gives the Thorns their third championship in team history. Portland had an early lead during Saturday’s game with Thorns striker Sophia Smith scoring the first goal four minutes into the match. The 22-year-old Smith became the youngest regular-season MVP in NWSL history this season. In the second half, Kansas City’s Addisyn Merrick netted an own goal to extend Portland’s lead.
An antisemitic hate group was behind a banner hung over a busy Los Angeles freeway on Saturday saying “Kanye is right about the Jews,” watchdog groups said, after Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, made a string of antisemitic comments in recent weeks. A third banner promoted a video platform that streams antisemitic content operated by the Goyim Defense League, a network of antisemitic conspiracy theorists. "Hate has no place in Los Angeles or elsewhere and these attempts will not divide us," it said. The ADL has warned that "extremists across the ideological spectrum," including members of the GDL, have been embracing Ye's antisemitic statements and celebrating news of his plans to acquire Parler. The Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments said they were investigating antisemitic fliers that were distributed in Beverly Hills, according to The L.A. Times.
CNN —When Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United last summer, he was accompanied by so much fanfare that his iconic No.7 jersey became the fastest selling jersey of all time, outstripping those sold by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Tom Brady joined or the LA Lakers when they signed LeBron James. “It has to end,” former United defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports. “Cristiano Ronaldo is going to have to go somewhere else and play every week because he can’t accept being on the bench. At the same time, though, these accolades give Ronaldo an aura on and off the pitch, and made him a Manchester United icon during his first stint at the club.
Retired Chinese leader Hu Jintao , the 79-year-old predecessor to Xi Jinping , was the focus of a highly unusual stir at Saturday’s closing session of the Communist Party’s twice-a-decade congress, making an unceremonious exit mid-proceedings. The departure of Mr. Hu appeared to illustrate how Mr. Xi’s supremacy has been aided by a generational shift in power. Jiang Zemin , the 96-year-old who led the Communist Party from 1989 to 2002, didn’t appear at all among the almost 2,300 delegates in the Great Hall of the People, during neither the Oct. 16 opening nor the Oct. 22 closing sessions of the party congress.

Forty-five years ago, Notre Dame linebacker Bob Golic bumped into a classmate in a dormitory elevator. The classmate, a cocky, 20-year-old junior named Castellini, said he was smuggling a keg of beer into the stadium at that Saturday’s game. He vowed to bring Golic a cold one on the sideline. Beer in all forms, let alone a fat steel barrel, was forbidden at Notre Dame Stadium. Although some college stadiums now sell alcohol, many—including Notre Dame—remain dry.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans street where one of the founders of rock ‘n’ roll spent most of his life is being renamed in his honor. A community-wide Second line and Musical Celebration begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the longtime home of Antoine “Fats” Domino on Caffin Avenue, which will now be known as Antoine “Fats” Domino Avenue. Led by the Stooges Brass Band, the second line will proceed down the renamed street to Oliver Bush Park, where musical tributes to Domino will occur. Saturday’s free celebration will feature performances by Kermit Ruffin, Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, Al “Little Fats” Jackson and Domino’s grandson, Antoine Domino Jr.Rev. Storm surge flood waters poured into the Lower 9th Ward, knocking many homes off their foundations.
CNN —Two “Yellowstone” cast members are teaming up with other celebrities for a good cause on horseback. “I launched Ride to the Polls in 2020, hoping to reach young people in my community who weren’t motivated to vote for good reason,” she told CNN. I think BIPOC communities, disenfranchised communities, across the country feel like they’re not sure what to trust anymore. Young and Harness’s drive to do more Ride to the Polls events was done with that in mind. A Skate to the Polls event was held back in August.
During the game, she said, the crowd nearby began chanting “F--- the Mormons.” Over and over. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU’s sponsoring institution, Aubrey wanted the chanting to stop. Latter-day Saints have a fair track record when it comes to cheek-turning. There’s of course a balance to strike in the case of the Oregon chants. And yet, if you can publicly chant “F--- the Mormons” with only minimal social consequences, it’s time for Latter-day Saints to collectively push, as Aubrey sought to do, for greater and more immediate action.
