Trump's testimony in a gag order hearing at his NY fraud trial "rings hollow and untrue," the judge writes. In the order, Engoron says Trump gave testimony that "rings hollow and untrue" after being suddenly called to the witness stand on Wednesday. NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump isn’t used to constraints. Trump is not only a former president, but also the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Just days ago, he was fined $5,000 for violating the same gag order, which Engoron imposed after Trump targeted his principal law clerk on social media. Indeed, things are likely to get much more complicated for Trump in the coming months as his four criminal trials get underway. New York court officials have beefed up security for judges and court personnel involved in Trump matters in the wake of the threats.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge said Thursday he would take a fuller look at Donald Trump’s out-of-court comments and reconsider a $10,000 fine he imposed on the former president a day earlier at his civil fraud trial. The development came after Trump’s lawyers urged Judge Arthur Engoron to rethink the penalty. She sits next to Engoron, and Trump’s lawyers had groused a bit earlier about the clerk’s facial expressions and role in the case. Trump’s lawyers insisted anew Thursday that Trump was talking about Cohen. They pointed out that right after his reference to the person “sitting alongside” the judge, Trump said: “We are doing very well, the facts are speaking very loud.

That could make it difficult for the party to deliver a coherent message on early voting. In an advertisement that aired during the first Republican presidential debate in August, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said into the camera: "When Republicans vote early, we win." With Trump railing against the practice, Democrats have increased their edge in early voting. In 2022, that gap widened, with Democrats accounting for 42.5% of early ballots and Republicans 33.8%. But Youngkin advisers said their data showed the early vote campaign had brought in ballots from low-propensity voters as well.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are pushing for a full plate of 12 separate funding bills to keep agencies running until Sept. 30, 2024, the end of the fiscal year. This rare feat requires close negotiation between the narrowly Republican-controlled House and the Senate, which has a two-vote Democratic majority. But the fiscal warfare between the Senate and conservative House Republicans that has raged since January is unlikely to end soon. Significant changes by Congress to Biden's request for aid to Ukraine and more money for border security were anticipated. His strong standing on the right was underscored minutes after his nomination Tuesday night. Mr. Johnson is fundamentally more conservative than the ousted speaker, Kevin McCarthy, who despite his frequent partisan attacks realized he needed to cut deals with Democrats to keep the government solvent and operating. He twice this year passed critical legislation with Democratic votes — ultimately sparking the coup that led to his downfall. Whether Mr. Johnson shares that same bipartisan imperative with a mid-November deadline looming for keeping the government open will become clear in the coming weeks. He will need to navigate his way out of a spending impasse that has split House Republicans before he even gets to negotiations with the White House and Senate leaders who now find themselves dealing with an unknown and untested new partner.

The judge presiding over the civil fraud trial of Donald J. Trump on Wednesday signaled that he might again punish the former president for violating a gag order that bars Mr. Trump from attacking court staff. The judge, Arthur F. Engoron, has already fined Mr. Trump for comments he made about his law clerk, Allison Greenfield, whom the former president was barred from discussing after he attacked her on social media in the opening days of the trial. During a break in the trial on Wednesday, Mr. Trump called Justice Engoron partisan — which is allowable under the order — but then continued by saying “with a person who’s very partisan sitting alongside him. Perhaps even much more partisan than he is.”After the break, the judge said he was concerned that the overheated environment in the courtroom could result in real danger.

A judge presiding over the $250 million fraud trial against Donald Trump took the unusual step of ordering the former president to the stand, where he was grilled over remarks minutes earlier that broke a gag order, fined $10,000 and warned that next time the penalty will be worse. Trump said his remarks were referencing Michael Cohen, his former lawyer and business associate, who was testifying on the witness stand on Wednesday. But, in light of previous events that led to the gag order, the judge brusquely rejected Trump’s testimony. The judge in Donald Trump's New York fraud trial has threatened the former president with sanctions again. He verbally attacked a law clerk in what the judge called a "blatant" violation of his gag order. "This judge is a very partisan judge," Trump was quoted by the AP as saying, "with a person who is very partisan sitting right beside him, perhaps even more partisan than he is." Engoron's principle law clerk, Allison Greenfield, sits some three feet to the judge's right. The gag was necessary, the judge explained at the time, because Trump had repeatedly "disparaged" the law clerk on social media, falsely calling her "Schumer's girlfriend."

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Cohen returned to the witness stand Wednesday in his ex-boss Donald Trump's civil business fraud trial as the former president's defense team tried to undermine the credibility and question the motives of his onetime personal attorney turned adversary. She tried to suggest that Cohen had angled unsuccessfully for a job in Trump’s White House — Cohen insisted he never sought one — and asked whether he had “significant animosity" toward Trump. Cohen is a key witness in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil case against Trump. Cohen is also expected to be an important prosecution witness in a criminal trial scheduled for next spring in which Trump is accused of falsifying business records. That case is one of four criminal prosecutions Trump faces in New York, Florida, Georgia and Washington.

The Jordan campaign for speaker may turn into a liability for Republican members in districts won by Biden in 2020. Jim Jordan is a radical election denier who does not represent the values of this district and Tom Kean Jr. should be ashamed of his vote. I asked Michael Olson, a political scientist at Washington University in St. Louis, about the possible costs of a Jordan vote for these 12 Republicans in Democratic-leaning seats. Republican respondents, however, are more approving of a conservative Republican representative and less approving of a representative who voted to impeach Trump. As a result, I doubt this one vote will be as consequential as something like voting to impeach Trump.”

The sun sets at the U.S. Capitol as House Republican candidates hold a forum before they select the next GOP House Speaker nominee on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. October 23, 2023. But after three weeks of infighting, some Republicans predicted that a new speaker could be elected on the House floor quickly. 3 House Republican can point to leadership and campaign fundraising experience that normally would make him a strong candidate for the post. The infighting has left the House unable to respond to President Joe Biden's $106 billion request for aid to Israel, Ukraine and U.S. border security. Republicans control the House by a narrow 221-212 margin, which means they can afford no more than four defections on partisan votes.
