How to Exercise When You Just Do Not Want To
  + stars: | 2024-01-24 | by ( Danielle Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +10 min
You set a goal to exercise regularly, but when the moment comes to get moving, your mind unleashes a torrent of excuses: I’m tired. I asked experts in exercise science and psychology to share their best advice for conquering common reasons people struggle to build an exercise habit. If you face a jam-packed daily schedule, try starting small, said Kate Baird, an exercise physiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. When even the word “exercise” makes you feel tired, experts recommend meeting your body where it is — in a few different ways. Exercise carries some risks, but remind yourself that the benefits of physical activity outweigh them, Dr. Phillips said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist and dissident who believes it his job to be “incorrect,” was hard at work Tuesday night during an appearance at The Town Hall in Manhattan. “I really like to make trouble,” Ai said during a 50-minute conversation-sparring match with author-interviewer Mira Jacob, during which he was as likely to question the question as he was to answer it. The event was presented by PEN America, part of the literary and free expression organization's PEN Out Loud series. Ai was in New York to discuss his new book, the graphic memoir “Zodiac,” structured around the animals of the Chinese zodiac, with additional references to cats. The book was not initiated by him, Ai said, and he was to let others do most of the work.

CNN —Just like women, men undergo significant hormonal changes as they age, especially in their testosterone levels. About 2 in 10 men over the age of 60 suffer from low testosterone levels, according to the American Urological Association. Only about 5% of men with low testosterone receive treatment, according to a 2018 study by the New England Research Institutes. Topical gels and creams are applied to the skin, ensuring steady hormone levels but require caution to prevent skin-to-skin transfer. A 2015 review found that overweight men are more likely to suffer from low testosterone, and losing weight can increase testosterone levels.

The oeuvre of director Norman Jewison, who died this past weekend at the age of 97, can’t be simply categorized. Here are some films of his available to stream, no matter your mood. Without telling his wife, Judy Kimball (Day), George goes about trying to make sure she is set for when he dies, including finding her a new man to marry when he’s gone. It’s a classically zany rom-com from the era, but the film also shows Day and Hudson at their most vulnerable as they untangle all these complications. It’s a sign of what was to come from Jewison, who always found the emotional core of his characters and allowed actors to do some of their best work.

The science behind sleeping more in winter
  + stars: | 2024-01-22 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
“If you feel like sleeping more in the winter, you’re not alone,” said Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an associate professor of clinical medicine at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California, citing research that found at least a third of American adults reported they sleep more in the winter. But participants did get 30 more minutes of rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep during winter. Here’s what experts think you should know about the science and whether you should make any adjustments. “But we can make adjustments to perform in a better way, to rest in a better way during winter,” she said. “To help our bodies make this transition from sleep to wake, it’s important to have light exposure in the morning during winter months,” Weiss said.

The long wait between S & P 500 all-time highs is a friendly factor for forward performance, as far as historical observations go. John Kolovos of Macro Risk Advisors says, "It is OK to be bullish on the stock market (S & P 500) just not the market of stocks (everything else)," from a trend-following perspective. Barry Knapp of Ironsides Macroeconomics calculates that the equal-weight S & P is one standard deviation cheap versus the market-cap-weighted index. Remarkably, the S & P 500 first pushed above 19-times forward earnings exactly four years ago, right before the Covid crash. Well, the S & P 500 has delivered an annualized total return near 11% in the four years since.

The first step is picking out the right kind of pizza. A standard, thin-crust frozen pizza works best for the smaller appliances. Priscilla ThomasAt first, I picked up some frozen pizzas with rising crusts. But no amount of time could bake the crust before the toppings burned in either appliance. I'd recommend avoiding any medium or thick-crust pizzas so you don't end up with uncooked doughOnce I tracked down the perfect thin-crust pie, I sliced the pizza while frozen with a sharp, strong knife.

For some, the seasonal shift can lead to a clinically depressive state aptly called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Even better, it takes less effort than you might think to realize the mental benefits. Below, I’ve outlined four science-backed ways you can become more active to boost your mental health and ease the winter blues. Meeting the World Health Organization’s guidelines of 2.5 hours of moderate exercise weekly provides maximum overall physical and mental health benefits, but studies have shown that even relatively small doses of activity offer significant mental health benefits. Whatever form of exercise you choose, adding just a little more physical activity into your life will provide noticeable mood-boosting benefits to help you get past the seasonal slump.

The Davos consensus on the presidential electionPublicly, the global business leaders who gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, haven’t wanted to predict the winner of the upcoming U.S. presidential election. In an interview with Andrew on CNBC, he didn’t predict that Trump would win, but suggested that dismissing the former president and his supporters would be a mistake. “He wasn’t wrong about some of these critical issues, and that’s why they’re voting for him,” he said. “Trump is already the president at Davos — which is a good thing because the Davos consensus is usually wrong,” Alex Soros, the son of George Soros, said on a panel. Opinion | The Roots of Trump Nostalgia

Jonathan Chait has a long lament in New York magazine about the diminishing intensity of anti-Trump politics in America. Even as the former president shoulders his way toward the Republican nomination and leads President Biden in many polls, Chait frets that “the imperative to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has become tiresome.” Indeed, a kind of “exhaustion” with anti-Trumpism, Chait writes, “may be the most dominant attribute of our national mood.”His essay goes on to interpret this exhaustion as more psychological and even spiritual than simply political. The way that so many anti-Trump Republican donors and politicians seemed to essentially give up on the hope of a competitive primary once Trump was indicted and Ron DeSantis didn’t set the world on fire fits this framework. So does the way that the Democratic Party has seemingly sleepwalked into renominating Biden despite his lousy polling numbers and obvious age-related issues. But I also think more than just exhaustion is at work here, and that some of the different groups Chait identifies as insufficiently anti-Trump — left-wingers, establishment Republicans, pocketbook-conscious swing voters — are actually experiencing something that might be more accurately characterized as a kind of Trump nostalgia.

President Biden is cruising to the Democratic nomination. Former President Donald J. Trump could begin to wrap up his party’s nod within days. Even as both men stroll toward likely summer coronations and a fall rematch, an undercurrent of disbelief is coursing through the country. Many Republicans view Mr. Biden as so politically and physically weak that they think his party will replace him. Many Democrats can’t fathom that Mr. Trump could win another nomination while he is facing 91 felony counts and four criminal trials.

Our genetics play a big role in how easy we find it to gain and lose weight. But it's possible to be a healthy weight despite your genes, an expert in the genetics of obesity said. Don't focus on calories aloneTo lose weight, you have to be in a calorie deficit , meaning you're burning more calories than you consume. Focus on your health over your appearancePeople want to lose weight for lots of reasons but a common motivation is to fit into societal beauty ideals. This can prove to be a weak motivator in the long run though, and doesn't necessarily benefit your health, Yeo said.

Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of America’s gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the US economy, so a recession is nearly impossible as long as consumer spending is growing. Wednesday’s report is expected to be a good one — economists polled by FactSet expect that a strong holiday shopping season boosted consumer spending by 0.4% in December from the month prior. But new data from the New York Federal Reserve on Tuesday has soured the mood on Wall Street. The outlook for consumer spending doesn’t look so bright, either. The trend marked the deepening of a demographic challenge set to have significant implications on the world’s second largest economy, report my colleagues Laura He and Simone McCarthy.
