Mr. Al-Asaad and his family, like so many others, were displaced from their home by Israel’s intense bombardment and invasion and now sleep in a tent in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip. He spends his days struggling to find food for himself, his wife, their three children and his sick mother. Since the start of the war in Gaza in October, the aid group said, it had delivered more than 43 million meals there. Mr. Al-Asaad knows many people relied on meals from World Central Kitchen, which often consisted of rice and beans and sometimes meat or chicken. His family rarely got the meals “because the demand was more than the supply,” Mr. Al-Asaad said in an interview on Friday.

London CNN —British business groups are warning that newly announced post-Brexit charges on plant and animal imports could push up food prices not long after food inflation came down from double-digit rates. The port and the undersea tunnel beneath the English Channel handle the majority of UK food imports. Annual UK food price inflation topped 19% in March 2023, the highest rate in 45 years, and stood at more than 10% as recently as in October. Some are already “deciding that it is too expensive or too much hassle to serve the UK,” he told CNN. A government spokesperson said the new charges “were at the bottom end of the range” discussed with UK businesses during a consultation period last summer.

Trump Media, which began being publicly traded last week, is now far and away the most expensive U.S. stock to sell short, according to S3 Partners , a leading financial data marketplace platform. You need a lot of cash — and guts — to short Trump Media stock right now. "It's the most expensive stock borrow," Dusaniwsky said of Trump Media. As of Wednesday, the short interest in Trump Media — or value of shares borrowed for short trades — was about $255 million. The investors who are able to borrow shares from their brokers for a Trump Media short sale are "good customers" of those brokers, he said.

It is most famous for its tiger population, but eight other species of wild cats also roam, such as the clouded leopard, the bay cat, and the flat-headed cat. Sebastian Kennerknecht/PantheraThese wild cats are notoriously elusive and, besides the tiger, understudied. Despite this, almost all Malaysia’s cat species are classified as endangered, vulnerable or near threatened, due to habitat loss, poaching and climate change. Roshan Guharajan, project coordinator for Panthera Malaysia, focuses on the Malaysian region of the island of Borneo, which is home to five species of wild cat. By monitoring the different species, Panthera is hoping to gather information on population sizes, range estimates and the threats that they face.

In the years before war and hunger upended daily life in Yemen, Mohammed Abdullah Yousef used to sit down after a long day of fasting during Ramadan to a rich spread of food. His family would dine on meat, falafel, beans, savory fried pastries and occasionally store-bought crème caramel. This year, the Islamic holy month looks different for Mr. Yousef, 52, a social studies teacher in the coastal city of Al Mukalla. But conflict, poverty and hunger have overtaken much of Yemen. As rapid inflation eats away at their spending power, middle-class Yemenis like Mr. Yousef have found themselves sliding into economic collapse.

Here's what experts have to say about the safety and sustainability of the carnivore diet. The diet, similar in style to the Atkins and keto diets, goes by many names: carnivore diet, lion diet, high-fat diet and animal-based diet. Beef, butter, bacon and eggs — that's what some influencers swear by for the " carnivore diet ." Weight loss is one of the huge benefits that people who follow the carnivore diet claim they've experienced since adding more animal-based products to their diet. A Simple New Technique Could Make Your Eggs More Humane
  + stars: | 2024-03-28 | by ( Cara Buckley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Every year in the United States, more than 300 million male chicks are hatched. But because they don’t lay eggs or produce valued meat, they are typically killed within a day, usually shredded alive in industrial grinders. But now an American egg producer said he plans to begin selling eggs from chickens bought from a hatchery equipped with new technology that avoids that grisly outcome, a first in the United States. “The average consumer simply has no awareness that this is even an issue,” said the producer, John Brunnquell, founder and president of Indiana-based Egg Innovations, which sells 300 million free-range and pasture-raised eggs a year. Mr. Brunnquell said the main hatchery he uses was on track to adopt the technology in early 2025 and that he expected to begin selling eggs produced with the new technique late next summer.

CNN —More than 1 billion meals are wasted across the world each day while nearly 800 million people go hungry, a new United Nations report has found. This is on top of the 13% of the world’s food lost as it makes its journey from farm to fork. The vast majority of food waste goes to landfill, generating methane as it breaks down. The report also said food waste is not just a “rich world” phenomenon. The amount of food wasted in high- and middle-income countries differed by just 7 kilograms (15 pounds) per person each year.

As a medical oncologist, I am heartbroken — but hardly surprised. In fact, it is part of a rising global trend in which newly diagnosed cancer patients are getting younger. The global incidence of early-onset cancer increased by 79.1% and early-onset cancer deaths rose by 27.7% from 1990 to 2019, a 2023 study in the journal BMJ Oncology found. And because early-onset cancers are often diagnosed at advanced stages, they were once thought to be biologically different and more pernicious than their older counterparts. Younger patients may be pregnant at the start of therapy or worry about the effects on fertility.

Trump Media & Technology Group Corp — Donald Trump's social media company — is a flashing red light of a stock. In other words: It seems like a perfect candidate for short sellers — investors who bet that a company's stock price is overvalued and will fall. Related storiesS3's managing director, Ihor Dusaniwsky, offers one explanation: It's particularly hard to short Trump's company for technical reasons. Citing diminishing chicken supply, Chick-fil-A will back off its pledge never to serve chicken that was fed antibiotics, and instead it will embrace a looser industry standard: “no antibiotics important to human medicine.” Chick-fil-A first announced that it would abandon antibiotics in 2014. The change comes after Tyson, America’s biggest poultry company, last summer ended its eight-year-pledge to keep antibiotics out of its chicken. That particular disease is not treatable with antibiotics, but other diseases that can kill chickens do respond to antibiotics. In addition to chickens’ health, antibiotics are particularly important to promote poultry growth — particularly for items like large broiler chickens. It noted in that 2007 publication that “an appropriate balance should be struck between animal health needs and human health considerations – human health being, however, paramount compared to animal health.”

The four men suspected of carrying out the attack were arrested near Russia’s border with Ukraine, Russian authorities said. In the same way, the recent death of Alexey Navalny, Russian most prominent opposition leader, has permanently silenced a vocal Kremlin critic. But for a leader who has promised security and stability to Russians, a major attack on Russian soil is yet another powerful blow.
