New York City and the state will pay $36 million to two men who were wrongly convicted of murdering Malcolm X, per AP. Muhammad A. Aziz originally sought $40 million in a civil rights lawsuit in July. The settlement will be split between Aziz and the estate of the late Khalil Islam, who died in 2009. Paperwork for the settlement will be signed over the next few weeks, with New York City paying $26 million and the state of New York paying $10 million, Shanies told the AP. The settlement will be split equally between Aziz and the estate of Islam, The New York Times reported, citing Nicholas Paolucci, the director of public affairs for the New York City Law Department, and Shanies.

Giorgia Meloni has become Italy's first female Prime Minister. Her new government is set to be the most right-wing since the era of Benito Mussolini. She's previously said, "No to the violence of Islam, yes to safer borders, no to mass immigration." Her new government has already shown signs of political tensions, with the leader of the Forza party, former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, having left a note in public view at the opening of Parliament calling the new prime minister as overbearing, domineering, arrogant, and offensive, according to Politico. League leader Matteo Salvini, Meloni's other far-right ally, has also long been seen as a Putin admirer, reported the BBC.

Critics say these accusations aim to present the protests as ethnic unrest rather than a country-wide uprising, and to justify a crackdown. Rights group Hengaw says it has recorded the deaths of at least 32 civilians killed by government forces during protests. Estimated to number some 10 million, Iranian Kurds are also Sunnis and mostly live in northwestern regions bordering Turkey and Iraq - which also have large Kurdish minorities. Kurdish human rights organisation Hengaw has identified 23 Kurdish people killed in the latest protests. The Revolutionary Guards, which have put down unrest in the Kurdish region for decades, have accused armed Iranian Kurdish dissidents of involvement in the protests.

Qatar's influential Egyptian-born cleric Sheikh Yussef Al-Qaradawi attends the opening session of a conference of Muslim scholars in support of Palestinian people in Doha May 10, 2006. REUTERS/Fadi Alassaad/File PhotoDUBAI, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Senior Muslim cleric Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, a spiritual leader for the Muslim Brotherhood and defender of Arab Spring revolts, died on Monday at age 96, according to a post on his official Twitter account. However, some social media users appearing to post from Egypt and Saudi Arabia among other countries celebrated his death and accused him of sowing discord between Arab nations.

Kurdish protesters rally in Erbil over Mahsa Amini's death
  + stars: | 2022-09-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
People take part in a protest following the death of Mahsa Amini in front of the United Nations headquarters in Erbil, Iraq September 24, 2022. Protestors carrying placards with Amini's photograph gathered outside the United Nations compound in Erbil chanting"Death to the dictator" - a reference to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Amini's death has reignited anger over issues including restrictions on personal freedoms in Iran, the strict dress codes for women and an economy reeling from sanctions. "We are not against religion, and we are not against Islam, we are secularists, and we want religion to be separate from politics," said protester Maysoon Majidi, who is a Kurdish Iranian actor and director living in Erbil. The Big Family Gathering march in the conservative heart of Istanbul attracted parents with children, nationalists, hard-line Islamists and conspiracy theorists. Turkey’s media watchdog gave the event the government’s blessing by including a promotional video that called LGBTQ people a “virus” in its list of public service announcements for broadcasters. “We need to make all our defense against this LGBT. We need to get rid of it,” said construction worker Mehmet Yalcin, 21, who attended the event wearing a black headband printed with Islam’s testimony of faith. “We are sick of and truly uncomfortable that our children are being encouraged and pulled to this.”Seeing images from the gathering terrified Willie Ray, the drag performer who is nonbinary, and Willie Ray’s mother, who was in tears after talking to her child.
Alleged eyewitnesses say they saw Amini being beaten to death by Iran's feared morality police. Appearing in public as a woman without the head covering is a criminal offense in Iran and carries the consequence of prison time. What this uprising has revealed is the complete illegitimacy of not only the Islamic Republic, but indeed of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, in the eyes of this new generation. Roham AlvandiThe U.S. responded by condemning the Iranian government's actions, and has imposed sanctions on Iran's morality police, who it blames for Amini's death. "Not just has Iran oppressed the women there," she added, "but it has made the world hate us."

"Remember, while you're in Qatar, you are subject to local laws," U.S. diplomat Morgan Cassell said in a YouTube video. While Qatari authorities have not confirmed this approach, special legislation taking effect during the tournament gives Qatar's World Cup security chief - known as the Gold Commander - significant leeway in tackling violations of Qatar's laws. Police plan tougher action when the safety of people or property is under threat, World Cup organisers told diplomats in a briefing a few months ago, several diplomats said. Security is just one challenge facing Qatar, the first Middle East country to host a soccer World Cup and the smallest nation to do so.

Last week, the Bangladesh central bank freed up banks to do transactions in Chinese yuan, so as to enable trade with China. Leader of Italy's nationalist Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia) party and frontrunner to become prime minister Giorgia Meloni, holds a closing rally in Naples, Italy, September 23, 2022. Fast forward three years, and the nationalist leader is also poised to become Italy's first female prime minister. It is from tomorrow that we must prove our worth," the 45-year-old Meloni told party faithful early Monday morning. All the tough talking inevitably draws comparisons in the Italian press between Meloni and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Just as Thatcher shattered Britain's glass ceiling to top office 43 years ago, so Meloni looks set to follow suit in Italy.
