The market risks a harmful debt bubble, potentially spreading losses in the financial sector. Economist Dambisa Moyo warns of overvalued stocks driven by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. AdvertisementThe stock market could be hosting one of the most harmful types of debt bubbles, with losses that risk spreading around the financial sector, according to one economist and investing veteran. But even more concerning is that the US could be seeing one of the most problematic types of bubbles, fueled by highly borrowed and "unproductive" assets, Moyo said. Losses from troubled companies also risk contaminating other areas of the market, Moyo added.

In as soon as three years, there probably won't be an employee at Goldman Sachs who isn't touched by AI, predicted Goldman Sachs' chief information officer, Marco Argenti. The hypothesis (which Argenti conceded is "completely not scientific") goes to show the incredible momentum of generative AI on Wall Street. Goldman, like its peers up and down the Street, put generative AI tools in the hands of their software engineers to help them write and document code faster. Now, Argenti is looking ahead to "the next big wave" in Goldman's AI journey: front-office workers. What do you think will be different about how Goldman adopts generative AI versus your competition?

Read previewThe US unemployment rate is up nearly 0.5% from its cycle low on a three-month moving average basis, which has historically been a reliable indicator that an economic recession is near. But even if the Sahm Rule does officially trigger, this time is different, according to Goldman Sachs. Advertisement"Job growth is far from weak, and with final demand still growing at a robust pace, it appears set to remain fairly solid," Goldman Sachs said. "The Fed has 525bp of room to cut and no reason to hesitate anymore if it needs to push back," Goldman Sachs said. But as tech firms plan to invest billions of dollars in generative AI technologies, there's been another explanation for job cuts. While there's been a mountain of speculation about if and when AI technologies like ChatGPT could displace workers, their near-term impact on job losses could be less about job replacement and more about the cost of AI investments. The risks of AI job replacement remains to be seenIn the big picture, Netzer said he expects AI technologies to be an "enhancer rather than a replacer of jobs" in the years ahead. Advertisement"For many jobs, AI is likely to enhance our job, allowing us to spend more time on the things we enjoy doing and less time on the mundane," he said. The upcoming earnings report for Apple could create a big market move that options traders can take advantage of, according to Goldman Sachs. John Marshall, head of derivatives research at Goldman, said in a note to clients that the tech giant's earnings report after the bell on Aug. 1 could deliver a positive surprise. "[Goldman] Hardware analyst Michael Ng expects Apple (AAPL) to deliver an EPS beat at upcoming quarterly earnings driven by solid growth expectations for iPad/Mac and Services. A straddle is a type of options strategy involving a call and put option on a stock with the same expiration date and strike price. The Goldman note was written before Wednesday's tech sell-off, in which Apple fell 2.9%, so investors may want to consider other strike prices as well.
