The reality of the American air travel system is that powerful forces keep passengers flying the same carriers, even after service meltdowns like Delta just suffered. For passengers who live near one of the hubs where Delta controls most of the flights, such as Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City, choices are even more limited. But by Monday, the problems were mostly limited to Delta as other businesses were back to normal, adding to the frustration of its passengers. Delta canceled more than 4,400 flights from July 19 to 21, according to tracking service FlightAware. Past experience, plus the dominance of Delta in Atlanta and Don Hooper’s frequent flyer miles, would keep them using the airline.

Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.

The Olympics Have Arrived

It has been only three years since the last summer Olympics: the 2020 Tokyo Games, you’ll recall, were held in the summer of 2021. Some airlines have revamped their premium economy services in recent months, with passengers increasingly tempted by the prospect of upgrading to more luxurious seating without blowing their budget. Delta plans to roll out a premium economy service to transcontinental flights in September, while Singapore Airlines announced its updated premium economy class in March with a 200-item food menu. 'The sweet spot between cost and luxury'Delta plans to roll out a premium economy service to transcontinental flights in September. AdvertisementCounterpoint director and aircraft interiors expert Rob Semple told BI that the key to convincing passengers to upgrade was to make premium economy "visibly better" than economy class to increase the sense of FOMO — while still maintaining a luxury gap between premium economy and the more expensive business class. In announcing the policy change, Southwest said their research showed 80% of customers preferred an assigned seating system, while 86% of new customers did. The US intercepted Russian and Chinese bombers near Alaska on Wednesday. They weren't seen as a threat, but it's the first time the countries have been seen cooperating this way. Southwest Airlines is ending open seating and will offer extra legroom seats on its airplanes as mounting pressure on the carrier to increase revenue prompts the biggest changes to its business model in its 53 years of flying. The airline plans to start selling the first flights that will offer extra legroom next year, it said Thursday. When travelers choose a competitor over Southwest, the airline found in its research that its open seating model was the No. Rival carriers offer a host of options to upsell customers like extra legroom seats, premium economy or business class. Southwest will provide more details about the upcoming changes at an investor day at the end of September.

Lamb Weston was the worst-performing stock in the S & P 500 on Wednesday on the back of disappointing quarterly results. The Idaho-based supplier of frozen potato, sweet potato, appetizer and vegetable products to restaurants said fully diluted earnings per share fell more than 70% from the year-earlier period. Consequently, the stock price fell over 28% on Wednesday. At ~ 1.2x price to sales, Lamb Weston is the cheapest it has been in the past ten years. Some of that increase is justifiable; the company demonstrated considerably higher operating volatility than they or investors expected, and the debt-to-equity increase as a function of the stock price decline is also a contributor.
