WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) - China has been spying from Cuba for some time and upgraded its intelligence collection facilities there in 2019, a Biden administration official said on Saturday, following a report about a new spying effort underway on the island. The official said the issue predated Joe Biden's presidency, as had Beijing's efforts to strengthen its intelligence collection infrastructure worldwide. "The PRC (People's Republic of China) conducted an upgrade of its intelligence collection facilities in Cuba in 2019. That includes a trip to China that U.S. officials say Secretary of State Antony Blinken is planning for June 18. The official said U.S. diplomats had engaged governments that were considering hosting Chinese bases and had exchanged information with them.

The actor Cuba Gooding Jr. on Tuesday settled a civil lawsuit that had accused him of rape, averting a trial that had been expected to include testimony from three other women that he had abused them between 2009 and 2019. Mr. Gooding, who had previously been accused by a score of women of groping or forcibly kissing them, pleaded guilty last year to a single charge of kissing a woman without her consent. CNN —An anonymous woman and actor Cuba Gooding Jr. have “resolved the matter” in the federal civil rape case against him, according to a court docket entry. The trial was set to kick off Tuesday with jury selection, but is now “off the calendar,” the docket states. The woman had alleged that Gooding raped her at the Mercer Hotel in August 2013 after meeting her in a bar earlier that night. Last year, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of forcibly touching a woman at a New York City nightclub in 2018. CNN —The world awoke Wednesday morning to the latest threat from Russia’s former president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev. He’s like the fictional figure who appears out of nowhere, stares ahead with a blank face and slowly runs his finger across his throat: a none-too-subtle message from the boss. Or is he speaking for the Russian president? Shortly before he died, he had called Russia’s war against Ukraine “a fascist invasion.” The cause of death remains unexplained. With the war in Ukraine – a pivotal moment in Russia’s history – Putin remains at the center of the mafia-like government he has built.
