Cramer pointed to Jack Daniels maker Brown-Forman , which missed estimates during its most recent quarter and is down about 23% year to date. One paper published just this year sheds some light as to why tablet use could be related to anger outbursts. This is in the context of near-universal use of social media, with up to 95% of kids ages 13 to 17 reporting using social media. American teens report spending a shocking amount of time — nearly five hours each day—on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and other social media apps. There are a number of problems with this level of social media use, one of which is what this time is replacing. Third, for those whose kids already have smartphones and use social media apps, speak with them about the impact of social media on them.

Florida had the biggest net gain of high-earning households, according to a recent SmartAsset study . Using $200,000 of adjusted gross income as a threshold, the study examined the number of high-income households moving into and out of each state to determine the net inflow. More high-income households have left California and New York than moved in, but some states saw the opposite. "I would say that's a little unique, that these smaller-population states are really pulling their weight in attracting or pulling above their weight in attracting high-earning households," DeJohn says. Here are the states that saw the biggest net inflow of high-earning households:

The latest global market volatility has reinforced China's status as a distinct market, even if its growth has slowed recently. While U.S. tech stocks plunged and Japanese stocks swung wildly in a historic two days of price action , Chinese stocks suffered less . The investors remained net buyers of Chinese stocks for the third quarter so far as of Aug. 6, the data showed. Finally, the low correlation of the China stock market with the U.S. stock market could provide investors with diversification benefits." Chinese stocks, especially those traded on the mainland, have historically been less correlated to global market moves due to Beijing's capital controls and other restrictions.

Enter America’s top job creator: The mighty health care industry. Demand for health care workers remains red hot, according to recent government data on job openings. In June, the health care and social assistance industry had the highest seasonally adjusted job openings rate of any industry, at 7.6%, well above the total rate across the job market of 5.5% that month. That has translated into fatter paychecks for health care workers compared to the general private sector. “Virtually every nurse or health care tech in the country has a job,” Girard said.

The U.S. is in what may end up being its biggest summer wave of Covid, with no end yet in sight. This year’s summer wave also began earlier than last year’s, Jha said. “Besides that, there’s not much that we can sort of put our finger on to say this is what’s driving this summer surge," Pekosz said. Jha said that what happens this winter is impossible to predict but that there could be a silver lining to a large summer wave. “A big summer wave tends to lead to a little bit of a smaller winter wave and vice versa, just because there’s a little bit more immunity in the population,” he said.

However, the system that workers rely on to collect unemployment benefits is at risk of buckling — as it did during the Covid-19 pandemic — if there's another economic downturn, experts say. Unemployment insurance provides temporary income support to laid-off workers, thereby helping prop up consumer spending and the broader U.S. economy during downturns. There's also wide variation among states — which administer the programs — relative to factors like benefit amount, duration and eligibility, according to the report, authored by more than two dozen unemployment insurance experts. Why the unemployment insurance program buckledJoblessness ballooned in the pandemic's early days. Claims for unemployment benefits peaked at more than 6 million in early April 2020, up from roughly 200,000 a week before the pandemic.

The recent unwinding of the yen "carry trade" could remain a long-term headwind amid already turbulent markets.
