Voters in Florida's 10th congressional district elected 25-year-old Maxwell Frost to the U.S. House of Representatives in November, making him the first member of Gen Z elected to Congress. Soon to be 26, Frost is on the older end of Gen Z, but his rental dilemma already demonstrates his relatability to his young constituents. And among Gen Zers who've been able to, 32% are spending half their monthly income on housing, Credit Karma found. Ocasio-Cortez remains the youngest woman in Congress, but Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) replaced her as the youngest member during his tenure. Cawthorn will maintain the title of youngest person elected to Congress, but Frost will become the youngest sitting member when he's sworn in in January.

Disastrous presales for Taylor Swift's Eras tour renewed controversy over Ticketmaster's dominance. In 2010, Ticketmaster merged with Live Nation, raising antitrust concerns. Live Nation has been facing an ongoing DOJ antitrust investigation since before the Taylor Swift-Ticketmaster saga, the New York Times reported last month. Representatives for Ticketmaster and Live Nation did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday morning. Former FTC policy director David Balto previously told Insider that the Eras Tour ticket crisis shows the merger's anti-competitive effects on consumers, including exorbitant fees.
The Republican Party will end the once promising 2022 cycle having failed to reach many of its goals. This is not how the Republican Party envisioned 2022. In particular, many GOP candidates, including Walker, continue to underperform in fastly growing suburbs. It's all about the candidatesGeorgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker speaks with supporters during a campaign rally in Milton, Ga., on November 21, 2022. While several Republican hopefuls have illustrated that suburban voters are not unreachable, Trump-backed hopefuls have routinely struggled.
Among female independents, Trump’s ratings were even worse: just 23% favorable and 72% unfavorable, according to previously unpublished exit poll results provided by the CNN polling unit. Trump’s unfavorable rating hit a comparable 69% among independents with at least a four-year college degree. That was a significantly smaller advantage than the double-digit lead among independents Democrats enjoyed in both the 2020 presidential race and the 2018 contest for the House. While Democrats held the presidency, Republicans won independents by double-digits in House elections in the midterms of 2014, 2010 and 1994. Gretchen Whitmer won 59% of the independents with degrees and 56% of women independents.
Elon Musk mocked FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried for his low League of Legends ranking. Nuff said," Musk tweeted on Saturday, reminding users of Bankman-Fried's surprisingly low rank of Bronze III in the game. His goading of Bankman-Fried marks him as an unlikely ally to LoL player and Democrat congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, who previously mocked Bankman-Fried's rank as his empire crumbled around him. Bankman-Fried's Bronze is the second-lowest rank. "I play a lot more than you'd expect from someone who routinely trades off sleep vs work," Bankman-Fried tweeted, suggesting it was an outlet to help him switch off.
Nine Swifties have asked the FTC to look into Ticketmaster's ticket presale for her upcoming tour. The group is urging Swift fans to file complaints with their state attorneys general. The complaint also claimed that Ticketmaster violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by not making clear which seats were accessible to people with disabilities. The complaint claims Ticketmaster's 2010 tie-up with Live Nation should have been blocked. "This is bigger than Taylor Swift," said Burger.
WASHINGTON — Democrats are poised to ditch Iowa and move up Michigan in their presidential primary calendar starting in 2024, according to several Democratic officials involved in the process. New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina are likely to retain their early spots, while Iowa would lose its first-in-the-nation status. The Michigan state Senate voted Tuesday to move their presidential primary to the second Tuesday in February, a month earlier than its current date. “Nevada is a microcosm of the rest of the country.”South Carolina, which boosted then-candidate Joe Biden to a lead Democratic presidential primary contender in 2020, also retained its place as first in the South. That means the two parties will have different presidential primary maps for the first time in years.
The House took the first step towards averting a rail strike, passing legislation to impose an agreement. But members also voted to pass a measure that would give workers 7 paid sick days. Paid sick leave, or lack thereof, has emerged as one of the biggest issues among rail workers. But both the tentative agreement and the paid sick leave resolution still need to pass the Senate. If the agreement passed without paid sick leave, "it's going to make life hard for railroad workers," Grooters said.

Elon Musk's bedside table appears to feature a book on etiquette by George Washington. Musk shared a picture Monday morning of what he said was on his bedside table. The book gives advice on "how to dress, walk, eat in public, and address one's superiors." It is unclear whether Musk took the picture himself or whether it's actually his bedside table. The box set wasn't the only thing on what Musk said was his bedside table.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, likely the chamber’s next speaker, is holding firm to his pledge to strip three liberal Democrats of their committee assignments when the new Congress is seated next year. That’s not sitting well with Democrats, as they are about to enter the House minority for the first time in four years. By breaking tradition and meddling with committee assignments across the aisle, they had to know they were triggering years of partisan tit for tat. Republicans considered punishing her by taking her committee assignments, but Greene apologized for some of her worst statements, and her colleagues relented. Many lawmakers are discovering social media and cable news are a better path to influence than committee assignments.

Fewer states than ever could pick the next president

Five states decided the last presidential race by flipping from Trump in 2016 to Joe Biden in 2020 – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The Democratic and Republican presidential nominees have each carried 20 states in every election since at least 2008. Democrats did not demonstrate the capacity to threaten any of the GOP’s core 20 states, as Republicans did in Nevada. A race with just Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia and Arizona as true battlegrounds would begin with Democrats favored in states holding 260 Electoral College votes (including Washington, DC) and Republicans in states with 235. After 2022, the list of genuinely competitive presidential states may be shrinking, but, if anything, that could increase the tension as the nation remains poised on the knife’s edge between two deeply entrenched, but increasingly antithetical, political coalitions.
Taylor Swift's tour promoter is shifting blame for the botched "Eras" ticket sale squarely onto Ticketmaster, potentially fueling even more concerns about the Live Nation-owned ticket seller's dominant role in the industry. AEG Presents, the company in charge of handling Swift's upcoming tour, has rejected claims made by Ticketmaster and Live Nation's largest shareholder, Liberty Media, that the promoter chose to work with the ticketing site. Lawmakers, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., called for more oversight on Live Nation, which merged with Ticketmaster in 2010, expressing antitrust concerns. They have called on the Department of Justice to investigate Ticketmaster and Live Nation for "hiking up ticket prices" and "charging rip-off junk fees." On Friday, The New York Times reported the Justice Department had already opened an antitrust investigation into Live Nation's practices prior to the Swift ticket sale fiasco.
Gisele Fetterman, wife of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman, speaks to supporters after her husband’s win in the Pennsylvania Primary election at a watch party in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S. May 17, 2022. The wife of U.S. Sen.-elect John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said right-wing misogyny is fueling personal attacks on her by conservative news outlets and on social media. "The right-wing hates women," Gisele Fetterman told The New Republic magazine in a new interview. "They especially hate strong women, and I think that's what you're seeing," said Fetterman, whose Democratic husband currently is Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor. Gisele Fetterman has become her husband's spokesperson since he suffered a stroke in May.
Paige, a Swiftie of 15 years, was not enchanted by the way ticket sales went down for the Eras tour. Swifties across the country have been disappointed by high-priced resale tickets and ticket scarcity. The gold rush on Swift tickets has led to some tickets being resold for up to $13,000. Paige says she saw tickets going for $33,000 when she purchased hers. "Like in the same way getting something in the wrong way would feel bad, it's the same with this.
AOC called out the GOP and told them to "connect the dots" following the Colorado Springs shooting. "Now after an anti-LGBT+ campaign, Colorado Springs," AOC tweeted Sunday. "And now after an anti-LGBT+ campaign, Colorado Springs," AOC continued. A mass shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, on Saturday night left at least five people dead and more than two dozen injured. Boebert, who is pro-gun rights and has notably pushed anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, and legislation, tweeted on Sunday: "The news out of Colorado Springs is absolutely awful.
Sen. Rick Scott said GOP leaders had become too accommodating to Democratic leaders in Washington. The Florida lawmaker spoke this weekend before the Jewish Republican Coalition in Las Vegas. "Republican leaders in the Senate routinely cave in and allow Schumer and Biden to win," he said. A new era where Republicans actually give the voters a positive reason for voting for them is coming," he continued to say. "I ran for leader because Republican leaders in the Senate routinely cave in and allow Schumer and Biden to win.
Ticketmaster apologized for its chaotic and botched ticket-sale system for Taylor Swift's upcoming tour. "We want to apologize to Taylor and all of her fans — especially those who had a terrible experience trying to purchase tickets," Ticketmaster wrote in a tweet Friday night. "We're working to shore up our tech for the new bar that has been set by demand for the Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour," Ticketmaster wrote. This disrupted the predictability and reliability that is the hallmark of our Verified Fan platform," Ticketmaster wrote. According to Ticketmaster, a record-breaking 3.5 million fans registered to the verified presale in hopes of snagging a ticket on Nov. 15.
Elon Musk issued a Twitter poll asking if Donald Trump's account should be reinstated. Trump was permanently suspended from the platform following the Capitol insurrection. AOC issued a reminder about the "last time" Trump was on Twitter, which he "used to incite an insurrection." Twitter poll it is," Ocasio-Cortez said in a tweeted response. She added video footage of former Vice President Mike Pence being escorted to an alternative location within the Capitol as rioters fought police and infiltrated the Capitol.
The U.S. Justice Department, which approved Ticketmaster's much-criticized purchase of Live Nation in 2010, is different than it was 12 years ago. A probe is well short of a decision to file a lawsuit asking a judge to break up a company. Ticketmaster previously said in a statement the Swift ticket sale problems were caused by unprecedented demand, much of it by bots trying to buy tickets to resell. "Live Nation was a new entrant, but it had the wherewithal to really compete," he said. A previous Ticketmaster fight with the department culminated in a December 2019 settlement that extended for another five years a consent decree that was part of the deal's initial approval.
