Beyoncé performs onstage during the “RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR” at PGE Narodowy on June 27, 2023 in Warsaw, Poland. "One of the things of course that struck me is how enormously high prices for concerts, for gigs have become," he told CNBC Make It. "I suspect that there is an impact on inflation overall from concert prices becoming more expensive. That's not necessarily due to one particular artist," he said, adding that concert prices themselves do, however, appear to have increased. Beyoncé’s two solo releases before “Renaissance” — her 2013 self-titled album and “Lemonade,” from 2016 — were billed as “visual albums,” featuring a fully realized music video for each track. Throughout the set, Beyoncé wove interpolations of her predecessors’ songs throughout her own, as if to place her music in a larger continuum. The grandiose “I Care” segued into a bit of “River Deep, Mountain High,” in honor of Tina Turner, who died in May. (The merch on sale at a Renaissance Tour pop-up shop in the days before the show included a hand-held fan emblazoned with the song title “Heated” for $40. The show contained moments that sometimes felt conceptually cluttered and at odds with the “Renaissance” album’s sharp vision, like dorm-room-poster quotes from Albert Einstein and Jim Morrison that filled the screen during video montages.

I’ve been fascinated with film music since elementary school, when I got a cassette tape called “Kid Stuff: An Afternoon at the Movies,” which featured Mr. Williams and the Boston Pops. No one exemplifies this better than Mr. Williams, who is still composing at 91. Mr. Williams accomplished this by inviting the trumpet section of the London Symphony Orchestra to blast away in its most piercing register. As he has with other cues, Mr. Williams has given this particular set piece an afterlife in concert performances. Beyoncé Knowles is teaming up with Kelly Rowland and Houston officials to support a housing project. It was unclear if Knowles and Rowland are investing in the project. However, Knowles and Rowland are among the few that have taken their real estate interests beyond the glitz and glamor of purchasing luxurious homes. With more buyers moving into the area, home prices and rents have surged as residents compete for housing. Given that statistic, he said he's "grateful" for the Knowles and Rowland project.

Though far smaller in scale, the debut of We Are Ona’s Paris studio, on a crisp evening in spring, felt just as significant. As the sun set, friends began to trickle in, accepting glasses of celebratory champagne. Kenny Duncan, 35, a sculptor, found common ground with the chef Zélikha Dinga, 34, whose old-world desserts are presented with an artist’s eye. Interest rates are higher and so are prices, credit is drying up and there are signs that the labor market is finally softening. The problem is that no one, not even the Federal Reserve, knows how much longer the American consumer can keep on spending. Personal saving rates soared as a result, with US households amassing about $2.3 trillion in savings in 2020 and through the summer of 2021, according to Federal Reserve economists. Economists know that savings must be dissipating, but haven’t quite figured out just how much of that money is left. Just a few weeks later, economists at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington said just the opposite.

While ticket prices have increased, he said, mid-year figures haven't shown an appreciable rise since May 2022, when U.S. inflation was 8.6%. In India, fans are happy to pay a premium for quality entertainment, according to Owen Roncon, chief of business for Live Entertainment at BookMyShow. In particular, as I’ll explain, the real puzzle here is why Taylor Swift doesn’t make even more money. Inspired in part by the work of my late former colleague Alan Krueger, I have in fact weighed in on Taylor Swift in historical perspective before. So, Taylor Swift makes a lot of money. But on the surface, that’s not what’s happening with Taylor Swift or Beyoncé. They’re making huge sums not mainly from record or streaming royalties but from concerts — which is, by the way, normal.

Egypt Spars With Dutch Museum Over Ancient History
  + stars: | 2023-06-18 | by ( Vivian Yee | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A new Dutch museum exhibit declares, “Egypt is a part of Africa,” which might strike most people who have seen a map of the world as an uncontroversial statement. But the show at the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden goes beyond geography. It explores the tradition of Black musicians — Beyoncé, Tina Turner, Nas and others — drawing inspiration and pride from the idea that ancient Egypt was an African culture. The exhibit is framed as a useful corrective to centuries of cultural erasure of Africans. And some feel that it is their culture and history that are being erased in the Western quest to correct historical racism.

Beyoncé shows blamed for fueling inflation in Sweden

Beyoncé performs onstage during the opening night of the “RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR” at Friends Arena on May 10, 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden. Beyoncé has won a record number of Grammys, has become one of the best-selling musical artists in the world and is on a sold-out, record-breaking world tour. "So whilst Beyoncé may have caused a shock to one month's data, she's not the reason for inflation in Sweden that's well above the central bank's target," he said. As in many European countries, Sweden has faced sharp inflation and higher household costs since Russia's invasion of Ukraine disrupted the wholesale energy market and distribution networks. And as for Grahn, he is not expecting to remain of interest to either Beyoncé fans or the world's media.

The Unexpected Beyoncé Effect: Hotter Inflation
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Eshe Nelson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In Europe’s relentless battle against inflation, another culprit has apparently emerged: Beyoncé. This could explain some of the reason Sweden’s inflation rate was higher than expected in May. Consumer prices in Sweden rose 9.7 percent last month from a year earlier, the country’s statistics agency, Statistics Sweden, said on Wednesday. Michael Grahn, an economist at Danske Bank, said that the start of Beyoncé’s tour might have “colored” the inflation data. “How much is uncertain,” he wrote on Twitter, but it could be responsible for most of the 0.3 percentage point that restaurant and hotel prices added to the monthly increase in inflation.

London CNN —Swedish consumers now have Beyoncé to blame for their bills, bills, bills. “[That’s] definitely not normal,” Grahn told CNN. Some of Beyoncé’s US fans told BuzzFeed News in February that they had snapped up tickets for the singer’s Swedish concerts at a huge discount to her US shows. Still, he expects the Beyoncé effect to be short-lived, with hotel prices likely to fall over June. Bruce Springsteen is due to play three shows in the Swedish city of Gothenburg later this month, which could put an upward pressure on prices, Grahn said, but that’s not as likely.

A group of music publishers filed a lawsuit Wednesday alleging "massive" copyright infringement. With violations of about 1,700 songs up to $150,000 each, the lawsuit could total about $250 million. A group of music publishers allege Twitter has allowed "massive" copyright infringements to happen, and claim the company profits from it. However, the music copyright suit only partially relates to Musk's ownership, and has been years in the making. The suit from a group of 17 music publishers, all members of the National Music Publishers' Association, alleges Twitter has operated for years as the only major social media platform that does not pay licensing fees to music labels to have their copyrighted music on their platform.

Beyoncé kicked off her blockbuster Renaissance tour in Stockholm, Sweden. The shows attracted a surge in hotel stays which impacted the country's inflation, an economist said. Economist Michael Grahn told The Wall Journal he considered it a "Beyoncé blip." Grammys add Best African Music Performance category
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Next year’s Grammys will feature three new categories, including Best African Music Performance, as the awards move to reflect the massive popularity of Afrobeats around the world. The category “recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent,” the organizers said in a statement published Wednesday. Throughout the year, the Recording Academy – the group of music industry professionals that presents the Grammy Awards – accepts proposals from its members for new categories. Those proposals are then reviewed by a committee and voted on by the academy’s board of trustees. At a meeting in May, the trustees voted to introduce the Best African Music Performance category, as well as awards for Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording, the statement said.
