PARIS/MADRID, July 28 (Reuters) - The French and Spanish economies grew at a sustained pace in the second quarter on the back of stronger exports and tourism, statistics agencies said on Friday, auguring a possible euro zone rebound. France's gross domestic product expanded in the second quarter a faster-than-expected 0.5% from the preceding quarter, while the Spanish economy grew 0.4%, according to data from INSEE and INE, as the French and Spanish statistics agencies are respectively known. The data from French and Spanish economies, respectively the euro zone's second- and fourth-largest, bode well after the euro zone's growth was 0% in the first quarter of this year. The French economy sped up from a revised 0.1% in the first quarter, INSEE said in its quarterly GDP report. Unlike France and Spain, Austria, a much smaller economy, shrank 0.4% in the second quarter due to a slowdown in construction and industry.

Berlin CNN —The remains of a German mountain climber who went missing 37 years ago while hiking along a glacier near Switzerland’s iconic Matterhorn have been recovered, as melting glaciers lead to the re-emergence of bodies and objects thought to be long lost. “DNA analysis enabled the identification of a mountain climber who had been missing since 1986,” police said in a statement. The discovery of the remains of the German climber comes as scientists revealed earlier this week that this month is on track to be the planet’s hottest in around 120,000 years. Singapore has overtaken Japan to boast of the world's most powerful passport, the Henley Passport Index showed. What it means is that the Singapore passport allows holders visa-free entry to 192 destinations out of 227 in the world. Germany, Italy and Spain tied in second place, with their citizens being able to visit 190 global destinations. Japan, which topped the list last year, slipped to third place — its passport allowing visa-free access to 189 destinations, down from 193 in 2022. Other passports that tied with Japan to rank third place are Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea and Sweden.

CNN —The jiggling and jostling atop the global passport rankings for 2023 just got a little more interesting. And while Asia has long dominated the top of the leaderboard in the index created by London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, Europe is bouncing back. The US, meanwhile, has dropped a further two places to eight spot, with access to a mere 183 destinations visa-free. The Henley Passport Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ranks 199 passports worldwide. Estonia, Iceland (182 destinations)The worst passports to hold:Three countries around the world have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 30 or fewer countries.

The pair launched "MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy," which will allow members of the Marriott Bonvoy rewards program to earn and redeem points for stays at 17 MGM resorts across the United States and Canada. MGM's 40 million members will gain access to the Bonvoy loyalty program. Marriott will earn fees on total room revenue on the MGM Resorts that are part of the agreement, Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano said.

Vienna, Austria, has become the prime European city for spies, especially from Russia, to set up. Efforts by local politicians to ban spying have been met with delays as Russia's war continues. Austria has expelled only four Russian spies posing as diplomats, while neighbors equipped with more robust laws have expelled over 400 spies since the start of Russia's war, the Times reported. There are 180 accredited Russian diplomats in Vienna, and a third of them are assumed to be spies, per the report. Recently, Chinese, Saudi, Iranian and Israeli spies have also benefitted from the power vacuum in Vienna, the Times reported.
