Opinion | Overcoming Obesity, With Diet and Physical Education
  + stars: | 2024-11-25 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Sadly, many individuals resort to easy-to-prepare and tasty ultra-processed foods that are loaded with salt, sugar and fats and that lack essential nutrients. Consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with obesity, as the article points out. We know what constitutes a healthy diet that helps to enable those who consume it from becoming overweight. But the only way to match such a diet is to prepare healthy, accessible and affordable meals at home. Without more emphasis on home cooking, obesity rates will continue to soar.

London CNN —Thyssenkrupp Steel has announced plans to eliminate 11,000 jobs by the end of this decade — about 40% of its workforce — becoming the latest German industrial giant to opt for drastic action to prop up its fortunes. “Increasingly, (global) overcapacity and the resulting rise in cheap imports, particularly from Asia, are placing a considerable strain on competitiveness,” Thyssenkrupp Steel said in a statement. Thyssenkrupp, Germany’s largest steel producer, joins the country’s biggest manufacturer Volkswagen in setting out a major overhaul to cut costs and bolster competitiveness. The German automaker also plans to close at least three factories in its home country and lay off tens of thousands of staff. “Locational weaknesses” include high energy costs, onerous red tape, and outdated physical and digital infrastructure.

I know, White House-wise, you’ve got a lot of more pressing things to worry about right now. But this is the holiday season — you deserve a chance to think about a happy tomorrow. When Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump, I consoled myself by pointing out, about 20 times a day, that she won the popular vote. No such luck this time around: Kamala Harris got creamed. Just before the election, I happily wrote a column celebrating “how relatively normal” the nomination of Kamala Harris seemed.

AdvertisementA South Korean man was given a one-year suspended sentence for evading military service. This is just the latest example of South Korean men going to extreme lengths to try to avoid serving. A South Korean man was found guilty of evading military service by deliberately putting on weight. While most South Korean men are expected to serve for at least a year and a half, shortly after finishing high school, the conscription law has a number of exceptions. This was the most common method in attempting to evade military service, with the second most common being faking a mental illness, with others falsely registering as disabled, and one internationally breaking a bone.

A United Nations helicopter has been buzzing nonstop for days over Haiti, as the U.N. starts to draw down its personnel in Port-au-Prince, evacuating 14 people at a time in chopper rides. Many embassies and international aid organizations — including Doctors Without Borders, which runs some of the few functioning hospitals in Port-au-Prince — are suspending operations in Haiti, where gangs have stormed into more parts of the capital, sowing panic among humanitarian groups. Port-au-Prince’s international airport remains closed to commercial traffic after gangs shot at U.S. airliners this month. CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the emerging ceasefire deal with Hezbollah “in principle” during a security consultation with Israeli officials Sunday night, a source familiar with the matter said. Israel still has reservations over some details of the agreement, which were expected to be transmitted to the Lebanese government on Monday, the source said. Those and other details are still being negotiated and multiple sources stressed that the agreement will not be final until all issues are resolved. A ceasefire agreement will also need to be approved by the Israeli cabinet, which has not yet occurred. Israel launched a major military offensive in Lebanon in mid-September following months of tit-for-tat border attacks which started on October 8 last year when Hezbollah attacked Israeli controlled territory in solidarity with Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza.

New York CNN —Microsoft said Monday that it has identified the cause of a major Outlook and Teams outage, and is deploying a fix to the problem. As of noon ET Monday, outage-tracking site Downdetector showed more than 5,000 user-reported problems, though this data doesn’t fully reflect the scale of the outage. Around noon, the company said the fix had reached “approximately 98% of the affected environments,” though reports on Downdetector kept increasing. The outage has hindered many office workers – though some US users on X celebrated the small break ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Tech outages have had dire effects around the world this year, though Microsoft’s case isn’t as widespread in comparison.

Never before, lobbyists say, has the geographic center of power shifted so dramatically with the arrival of a new administration. By leveraging his access to Trump, Ballard Partners was able to compete with the old white-shoe lobbying firms that have been the industry's dominant players for decades. Corporate clients need lobbyists who appreciate that Trump is "disrupting the status quo in Washington," Sayfie, the Ballard lobbyist, says. Some major companies, lobbyists say, have been caught off guard by the rapid pace of Trump's transition moves. Those who bankroll his staff and travel before he takes office, lobbyists say, stand to build connections and curry favor with the once and future commander in chief.

AdvertisementTrump has been hard on EVs, but a new friendship with Elon Musk could change things. So far, Musk supports Trump's plans to dismantle EV tax credits. Automakers had hoped that Musk would support EV regulations and tax credits, but it appears the CEO is siding with Trump for now. An industry group representing many automakers (but not Tesla) pleaded with Trump to preserve EV tax credits but reconsider some of the more stringent emissions regulations. This was an about-face from Musk's stance a few months earlier when he advocated for trade barriers and warned that Chinese EV companies would "demolish" competition without guardrails.

Every so often, Kendrick Lamar steps into the present. That’s part of what made his feud with Drake, which began in March and stretched through the spring and summer, so bracing. It was Lamar using Drake’s typical weapons against him — an acknowledgment that even if Lamar prefers not to pay attention to prevailing winds, he can ride them if need be. From a distance, “GNX,” his sixth album, which was released with no announcement on Friday, has some of that same immediacy. On the two opening tracks, “Wacced Out Murals” and “Squabble Up,” Lamar is rapping with the seething indignation he weaponized so effectively during the beef: “I’ll kill ’em all before I let ’em kill my joy”; “Before I take a truce, I’ll take him to hell with me.”
