Karabakh is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but populated mostly by ethnic Armenians who broke away in the 1990s in the first of two wars there since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Karabakh authorities said more than 50,000 had left so far, out of an estimated ethnic Armenian population of 120,000. Azerbaijan rejects Armenian accusations of ethnic cleansing, but images of tens of thousands of desperate people on the move have provoked widespread international alarm. Germany added its voice to U.S. calls for Azerbaijan to allow international observers into Karabakh. Karabakh authorities said they lost at least 200 people in Azerbaijan's offensive last week.

Anticipation should be building as Philip Morris prepares to bring iQOS back to the U.S. market. Philip Morris had partnered with Altria when iQOS was first launched in a handful of U.S. markets in 2019. Eventually, Philip Morris agreed to buy back the commercialization rights from Altria, and that deal is effective April 30, 2024. And this strategy is partly why, Herzog said, Philip Morris is one of Goldman's top picks. Last week, Philip Morris CEO Jacek Olczak spoke on X via ReutersPlus about its harm reduction efforts.

REUTERS/Caitlin Ochs/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - JPMorgan's (JPM.N) British retail bank Chase will ban crypto transactions made by customers from Oct. 16 due to an increase in fraud and scams, the company said on Tuesday. "We've seen an increase in the number of crypto scams targeting UK consumers, so we have taken the decision to prevent the purchase of crypto assets on a Chase debit card or by transferring money to a crypto site from a Chase account," a spokesperson for the bank said. JPMorgan has attracted more than 1.6 million customers to its Chase retail bank since launching the mobile app-based service in Britain two years ago, and plans to roll out the consumer bank in other international markets over time. SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Court of Appeals on Monday asked the state's highest court to decide whether Republican state senators who carried out a record-setting GOP walkout this year can run for reelection. Oregon voters last year overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure that created the amendment following GOP walkouts in the Legislature in 2019, 2020 and 2021. They and Oregon Department of Justice attorneys on the opposite side of the case jointly last month asked the appeals court to send the matter straight to the state Supreme Court. The appeals court on Monday formally asked the Oregon Supreme Court to take the case, said Todd Sprague, spokesman for the Oregon Judicial Department. The senators insist that the way the amendment to the state constitution is written means they can seek another term.

Manchester United also got a much-needed 1-0 win at Burnley to snap a run of three straight defeats in all competitions. Everton registered their first league victory of the season, producing an impressive display to triumph 3-1 at Brentford whose home struggles continued. A City win never looked in doubt once Kyle Walker set up Foden to thump in the opener after a 46-pass move and Haaland headed powerfully into the net from a cross by Matheus Nunes. "We played, I would say, 51, 52 minutes 10 against 11, so it was not easy, but we were fantastic," City manager Pep Guardiola said. Sept 23 (Reuters) - U.S. auto workers expanded their strike on Friday with a clear target for distress: dealers who sell and service GM and Stellantis vehicles. The strategy of choking parts delivery increases problems for some dealers who say it already had been difficult to source some components. The broader strike, which targets 38 parts distribution centers owned by GM and Stellantis, "is going to have these shops telling their customers 'We don't know when we can fix your vehicle. "It's definitely going to impact customers," said Thomas Morris, 60, who went on strike on Friday at a General Motors parts distribution center in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The center serves GM dealerships from Pennsylvania to Maine, moving some 30,000 parts for auto repairs each day, workers said.

Biden is running for re-election in 2024 and will likely face Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. "The only reason Biden is going to Michigan on Tuesday is because President Trump announced he is going on Wednesday," the Trump campaign said in a statement late on Friday. Trump has called for rank-and-file union workers to ignore their leaders. United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain blasted Trump earlier in the week, saying the union was "fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers." Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Stellantis has said it wants to be able to consolidate and close some of its parts distribution centers. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." A federal judge has ruled that a university in the Texas Panhandle did not violate the constitutional right to free speech when the school's president canceled a drag show earlier this year. Notably, federal courts have blocked drag show bans in Florida, Montana, Tennessee and a separate federal judge in Texas from being implemented. Yet in his decision, Kacsmaryk argued that drag shows are “sexualized content” and therefore can be more regulated than other forms of free speech. The ruling sparked a legal firestorm, but didn't go into effect because a separate federal judge essentially ordered the opposite in a different case in Washington. Meanwhile, drag shows across the country continue to be targeted by right-wing activists and politicians, with Republican lawmakers in several states, including Texas, proposing restrictions.

How companies are embracing generative AI...or not
  + stars: | 2023-09-22 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
New York CNN —Companies are struggling to deal with the rapid rise of generative AI, with some rushing to embrace the technology as workflow tools for employees while others shun it – at least for now. Some companies are enacting internal bans on generative AI tools as they work to better understand the technology, and others have already begun to introduce the trendy tech to employees in their own ways. Among media companies that produce news, Insider editor-in-chief Nicholas Carlson has encouraged reporters to find ways to use AI in the newsroom. Of the companies currently banning ChatGPT, some are discussing future usage once security concerns are addressed. “I don’t think it’s that companies are against AI and against machine learning, per se.

Days after a 1-year-old died and three children exposed to drugs at a Bronx day care site were hospitalized, investigators uncovered a trap door under a play area that was concealing fentanyl, other narcotics and drug paraphernalia. A neighbor had said last week that the owners of the facility had spent months sprucing it up — including laying down new floors. In addition to the kilogram, the police had already recovered two so-called kilo presses used by drug dealers to package large quantities of drugs. As of Thursday afternoon, the medical examiner’s office had not made an official determination of the cause of Nicholas’s death following an autopsy on Saturday. Fentanyl was found in the systems of the three children who were sickened.

Philip Morris International is considering selling off a stake in its largest pharmaceuticals unit. But more recently the division has struggled, and Philip Morris has had talks with Deutsche Bank on a range of options to try to grow its wellness and healthcare division, the WSJ first reported. In recent years, Philip Morris has also acquired Fertin Pharma, a nicotine gum maker, and OtiTopic, a respiratory drug maker. And, in the second quarter of this year, the company took a $680 million impairment charge related to its wellness and healthcare division. The news comes as the tobacco company continues to face resistance from public health groups.

Louis Milione retired from the DEA a second time this summer amid reporting by The Associated Press on potential conflicts caused by his prior consulting for the pharmaceutical industry. Milione had spent four years at Guidepost prior to his return, leveraging his extensive experience and contacts from a 21-year DEA career. “Should we say Welcome Back?” Guidepost quipped in a social media post this week announcing Milione’s rehire as president of global investigations and regulatory compliance. His career stands out for two cycles through the revolving door between government and industry, raising questions about the potential impact on the DEA’s mission to police drug companies blamed for tens of thousands of American overdose deaths. Morris & Dickson is still challenging the ruling, which threatens to put the $4 billion a year company out of business.

New nature-reporting recommendations aim to help companies assess their impact on and risks from the world’s natural systems. This is despite growing awareness of the catastrophic effects of biodiversity loss, Capgemini said in a report, based on a survey of executives of large organizations from major economies. The TNFD recommendations are currently voluntary, but come as regulation tightens around degradation of the natural world. Separately, in the EU, many companies are already facing obligations to report their impact on nature under the bloc’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. “We recognize that nature loss poses both risks and opportunities for business, now and in the future,” said Jennifer Motles, PMI’s chief sustainability officer.

Fentanyl was found near mats that children used for napping at a Bronx day care where one toddler died and three other children were hospitalized last week, the police said on Monday night. “It was laid underneath a mat where the children had been sleeping earlier,” Joseph Kenny, the Police Department’s chief of detectives, said at a news conference Monday evening. Chief Kenny said that investigators were working with federal authorities to discover whether the day care, Divino Niño on Morris Avenue, was opened as a front for a drug operation. Emergency medical workers were called on Friday afternoon to the day care center, where they administered the overdose-reversal medication Narcan and then rushed the children to hospitals. Medical tests showed fentanyl in the three children sickened but not killed.
