The latest crackdown on tech exports to China coincides with U.S. efforts to thaw difficult relations between the world's two largest economies. One, named the H800, has as much computing power at some settings used in AI work as the company's more powerful but blocked H100 chip. The U.S. now plans to introduce new guidelines for AI chips that will restrict certain advanced datacenter AI chips that are not currently captured, the U.S. official said. In order to keep AI chips the U.S. views as too powerful from China, the official said the U.S. planned to remove one of the parameters — the "bandwidth parameter" — it has used to restrict exports of certain AI data center chips. This would likely mean the speed at which AI chips talk to each other would be reduced.

Hamas fighters burst across the Gaza barrier fence into Israel in a stunning assault on Oct. 7, killing 1,300 and abducting dozens more, including Americans. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted during the 2014 conflict, 22% of respondents said the U.S. should support Israel's position, and 2% wanted support for Palestinian's position. Support for Israel's position in the new poll was strongest among Republicans, with 54% of the party backing Israel's position compared to 37% of Democrats. The newest U.S. aircraft carrier - and the world's largest - is already in the eastern Mediterranean and set to be joined by a second U.S. aircraft carrier in the next 10 days. While the White House says there are "no plans or intentions" for their use, it means U.S. military assets would be in place to provide air support to protect U.S. national security interests if needed. The U.S. also has an array of bases in the Middle East with troops, fighter aircraft and warships. "That said, we take our national security interests seriously and we have ample military force in the region to protect and defend those interests as needed," Kirby added. On Monday, rocket-warning sirens sounded in several towns in southern Israel, the Israeli military said. AMMAN, Oct 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday met with Jordanian King Abdullah in Amman, the second stop of his most extensive Middle East tour yet as Israel prepares for a sweeping ground offensive in Gaza, and he urged people in Gaza city to evacuate to the south. His demand, which the United Nations said would be impossible to carry out "without devastating humanitarian consequences”, comes a day after Blinken visited Israel and held talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the conflict.
