REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. expanded the restriction of exports of sophisticated Nvidia (NVDA.O) artificial intelligence chips beyond China to other regions including some countries in the Middle East, the company said in a regulatory filing this week. A sweeping set of rules announced last October signaled a major escalation of the U.S. crackdown on China's technological capabilities, but it wasn't immediately clear what risks exports to the Middle East posed. Nvidia did not specify which countries in the Middle East were affected. About 13.9% of sales came from all other countries combined, and Nvidia does not provide a revenue breakout from the Middle East. One year ago, Nvidia said U.S. officials told it to stop exporting the same two computing chips for AI work to China.

That's the equivalent of each household moving once every 23 years, an increase of six years from 2021, the monthly report found. Demand for homes in the last four weeks is down 34% compared to the average of the last five years, as higher mortgage rates and cost-of-living pressures weigh on the market, Zoopla said. While house prices have seen a small uptick, sales numbers have been hit hardest by higher borrowing costs, Richard Donnell, executive director at Zoopla said in a press release. "Cash buyers are more immune and on track to account for more than one in three sales in 2023," Donnell said. Mortgage rates have started to come down but remain high, with the average rate for a 2-year fixed mortgage for a 95% loan at 6.7% for the week of Aug. 21, online real estate company Rightmove said last week.

Pope Francis did not intend "to exalt imperialist logic," the Vatican said Tuesday, after a speech delivered on Friday drew criticism for references to Russia's imperialist past. "You are heirs of the great Russia — the great Russia of the saints, of kings, the great Russia of Peter the Great, of Catherine II, the great Russian empire, cultured, so much culture, so much humanity," Pope Francis said in the Friday speech, as translated and transcribed by NewsFromUkraine. The pope delivered the prepared speech in his native Spanish, before making these off-script comments in Italian. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Monday he was "adamantly against" any further grain import restrictions put in place by some of Ukraine's neighbors over the summer. The European Union allowed Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to ban domestic sales of Ukrainian grains as they said a glut of produce unable to be exported by Ukraine posed challenges to their domestic farmers. People have to learn to co-exist with polar bears in Churchill, where some of them stay waiting for sea ice to refreeze. Hudson Bay polar bears are among the most vulnerable on Earth because of loss of sea ice, with their numbers in sharp decline. The raucous two-hour debate offered a view of the deep challenges the contenders face in seeking to dislodge Trump from his perch at the top of the field. The debate took place a day before Trump planned to surrender in Atlanta to face charges he sought to overturn his election loss in the state. That led to a sharp back-and-forth between Christie, Trump's biggest critic among Republican candidates, and Ramaswamy, Trump's most ardent defender. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll released this month, Trump held 47% of the Republican vote nationally, with DeSantis dropping six percentage points from July to 13%. Moderators Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier, both Fox News hosts, started the debate by asking about the U.S. economy.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. Five babies had died, and at least six others had experienced unusual complications. Then, in the early evening of June 23, a baby boy — one of a set of newborn triplets — suddenly became sick and died. The following night, as the parents were still reeling, another of the triplets died. The infants had been in the care of Lucy Letby, a seemingly conscientious and well-liked nurse.
