7 Grammy Winners Worth Another Spin

Dear listeners,I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but this year’s Grammys were … really good? Tracy Chapman, radiating joy and in fine voice, sang “Fast Car” publicly for the first time in ages, alongside a visibly reverent Luke Combs. For today’s playlist, we’re going to hear from some more of those slightly-less-than-household-name artists who took home Grammys this year. I chose two selections of my own, and I also asked my fellow Times pop critics Jon Pareles and Jon Caramanica to send me a few of their picks — a mix of jazz, folk, pop, gospel and more. Listen below to tracks from Laufey, Peso Pluma and Samara Joy, and check out the Bonus Tracks for more of our Grammy coverage.

While we’ve seen floral and black gowns take center stage on this year’s red carpets, the Grammys are known for showcasing bolder, more theatrical fashion. True to form, Swift ensured this year's Grammy discourse would be dominated by her music, even if she didn't win a major award. Alas, the evening ended with Swift notching her record-breaking fourth win for album of the year. I was even more disappointed to watch Swift win over SZA, whose sophomore album, "SOS," earned universal acclaim. Despite being the most awarded person in Grammy history, Beyoncé has won only once in a general-field category (song of the year for "Single Ladies" in 2010). Only 11 Black artists have ever won album of the year.

KoBold Metals, a California-based metals exploration company backed by billionaires including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, said that it has discovered a vast copper deposit in Zambia. A spokesperson for KoBold Metals told CNBC on Monday that the company believes its Mingomba copper project in Zambia "will be one of the world's biggest high-grade large copper mines." "It is Kakula-scale in size and grade," KoBold Metals President Josh Goldman said in a statement shared on the firm's social media site X. Ivanhoe Mines, a Canadian mining company founded by billionaire magnate Robert Friedland, owns nearly 40% of the Kamoa-Kakula copper mine. It's Taylor Swift's world, and she just allows us to live in it. “Midnights” earned Swift her fourth career Grammy for album of the year on Sunday, an achievement no one can match. It breaks a tie with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, who each won the honor three times. Swift was the last example of an action-packed show where women earned the biggest honors and had the majority of the most memorable performances. There was a brief pause before SZA accepted an award for best R&B song, since she was changing backstage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When the 2024 Grammy nominees were first announced, women dominated the major categories. And at Sunday's show, those nominations translated into awards: Every televised competitive Grammy went to at least one woman. But at the Grammys, where much of the focus is on performers, it appeared like women were ruling the industry. “I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said. SZA, who led nominations with nine, took home three awards — but was completely shut out of the general field categories.

Republican U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz announced Monday that she intends to seek reelection for Indiana's 5th Congressional District, reversing an announcement a year ago that she would forgo another run. Last February, Spartz said she wanted to spend more time with her family and would not be running in 2024. But the two-term congresswoman now says she doesn't want her work in the Capitol to end in January. In January, Republicans U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon of Indiana and U.S. Rep. Greg Pence, brother of former Vice President Mike Pence, both announced their decision to forgo reelection in 2024. U.S. Rep. Jim Banks is running for Indiana's U.S. Senate seat vacated by GOP Sen. By Lewis JacksonSYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian court on Monday began hearing the appeal of a decorated war hero, who is fighting a court defamation ruling that found media groups had proven their reports he played a part in the unlawful killings of four Afghans in Afghanistan. He called the reports false and based on claims of failed soldiers who were jealous of his accolades, and sought unspecified damages. The civil court defamation finding required a lower threshold of proof than a criminal court would. SYDNEY (Reuters) - Large swaths of Australia on Sunday sweltered through a heatwave as authorities warned of elevated bushfire risk in an already high-risk fire season during an El Nino weather pattern. The nation's weather forecaster had heatwave alerts in place for Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and Western Australia, warning temperatures in some parts of the country could hit the low 40s Celsius (over 104 degrees Fahrenheit). The high in the west of Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, was forecast at 39 C (102 F), almost 10 degrees above the February mean, forecaster data showed. Hot and dry conditions combined with gusty winds prompted the forecaster to issue "extreme fire danger" warnings for parts of Victoria and South Australia states. Sunday's hot weather - the latest in a string of heatwaves to scorch Australia - comes after the country's east was hit last month by damaging floods.

Some of the ire has been directed at House Oversight Chairman James Comer, who has spearheaded the investigation into Biden family business records. “I don’t think it goes anywhere,” one Republican lawmaker said of the Biden impeachment inquiry. One senior GOP impeachment inquiry aide said it would be “a win too in our eyes” if the probe ended with legislative proposals to reform federal ethics laws, regardless of the decision on impeachment. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, who is co-leading the investigation, acknowledged a Biden impeachment is not a forgone conclusion. “Nobody is talking about that,” said GOP Rep.
