Gold, silver head for weekly gains on U.S. rate-cut momentum

Gold and silver prices retreated on Friday from record highs, but were positioned for weekly gains on growing anticipation of another bumper U.S. interest rate cut this year, as markets awaited a key inflation report for additional guidance. Gold and silver prices retreated on Friday from record highs, but were positioned for weekly gains on growing anticipation of another bumper U.S. interest rate cut this year, as markets awaited a key inflation report for additional guidance. Silver prices surged due to bullion's strong performance and China's stimulus measures, though some analysts warn that the rally may fade due to concerns over industrial demand. The Federal Reserve's larger-than-usual half-percentage-point reduction last week ignited a rally in gold, which hit consecutive record highs and has gained about 1.8% so far this week. Gold prices are currently supported by anticipated U.S. Fed interest rate cuts and China's stimulus measures, both of them are weakening the dollar, said Kyle Rodda, financial market analyst at Capital.com.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved Bristol Myers Squibb 's highly anticipated schizophrenia drug Cobenfy, the first novel type of treatment for the debilitating, chronic mental disorder in more than seven decades. Bristol Myers Squibb expects the twice-daily pill, which will be sold under the brand name Cobenfy, to be available in late October, executives told CNBC. Cobenfy could also be a huge long-term sales opportunity for Bristol Myers Squibb, which faces pressure to offset the potential loss of revenue from top-selling treatments that will see their patents expire. But they said the drug will likely have a slow launch, so it may not meaningfully contribute to Bristol Myers Squibb's top line in 2024 and 2025. Mortgage rates are expected to drop, which means that it might be a good time to buy a second home. There's no perfect time to buy a home, so I'm more concerned with whether it feels like a good time. So, while mortgage rates are expected to go down this year for primary homes, mortgage rates for second homes might not fall as equally. Still, the Fed rate cut is already impacting mortgage rates, which could benefit second-home mortgages, as well. Barring a big windfall of cash allowing you to buy something outright, there may never be a "perfect" time to buy a home.

New York CNN —Facebook and Instagram users will now be able to talk to voices that sound a lot like John Cena and Judy Dench. Parent company Meta (META) announced Wednesday that it is adding voice conversations and celebrity voices to its artificial intelligence chatbot, Meta AI. Now, instead of simply messaging with the chatbot, users can have real-time conversations and can choose from a selection of computer-generated or celebrity voices. The company partnered with Cena and Dench, as well as actors Kristen Bell, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key, to train the chatbot to replicate their voices. Previously, influencers could train AI to have text conversations with their followers; now, followers will be able to have full, quasi-video calls with the AI versions of influencers who use the tool.

A box of Ozempic made by Novo Nordisk is seen at a pharmacy in London, Britain March 8, 2024. Novo Nordisk 's blockbuster diabetes drug Ozempic may decrease the risk of opioid overdoses in certain patients, demonstrating its potential as an alternative treatment for opioid use disorder, according to a new study released Wednesday. The active ingredient in Ozempic, semaglutide, was associated with a "significantly lower" opioid overdose risk than other diabetes medications in people diagnosed with both Type 2 diabetes and opioid use disorder, said the paper published in JAMA Network Open. Around 3,000 people were prescribed semaglutide injections, while the remaining patients received treatments that ranged from insulins to older GLP-1s for diabetes. That reflects a 58% lower risk of opioid overdose in patients who took semaglutide, Xu said.

Washington CNN —Boeing factory workers felt pressured to prioritize production speed over quality and said they did not receive enough training to properly perform their jobs, according to the results of a special investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published Wednesday. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines shortly after takeoff. One of the more egregious examples, according to the audit, was a Boeing mechanic who used an improvised measuring device to check gaps between components. But there is still much work to be done on fixing Boeing’s safety culture, he said. “I think the safety culture change is going to be a long-term project,” Whitaker said.

"If we don't build enough infrastructure, AI will be a very limited resource that wars get fought over, and that becomes mostly a tool for rich people." Representatives for OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. He noted that data centers consume tons of water for their cooling systems — some of which evaporates, so it cannot be reused.
