CNN —Members of the Egyptian women’s beach volleyball team have spoken out against France’s hijab ban for its athletes after competing in an Olympic beach volleyball match wearing modest clothing. Marwa Abdelhady and Doaa Elghobashy represented Egypt at the Paris Olympics, wearing hijabs, long black sleeved shirts and black ankle length leggings in a women’s beach volleyball match against Spain. Speaking to CNN’s Swedish affiliate Expressen Thursday, Abdelhady said that she “doesn’t like” the hijab ban for French athletes. “I want to play in my hijab, she wants to play in a bikini,” Expressen reported Elghobashy as saying. In January 2022, the French senate voted to ban the wearing of the hijab and other “ostensible religious symbols” in sports competitions.

When Nemour performed it in competition in June, it produced the highest score recorded on the bars since the Tokyo Olympics. But while she may wow fans in her home country at these Games, she won’t be doing it under the French flag. Nemour’s father had an Algerian passport because his parents had been born in the country, and Nemour was entitled to one as well. At the world championships in 2023, Nemour won the silver medal on the uneven bars. Carini and Khelif exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the bout — an extremely unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris.
