CNN —First, Stanley cups were all over social media because so many people wanted them. Videos on social media sites such as TikTok show people breaking out a lead testing kit and trying it on their Stanley cups and other travel flasks. And Stanley cups are everywhere. Stanley cups are in the hands of beauty bloggers, the cars of parents at school pickup, and even on the Christmas lists of many kids this past year. The main source of lead exposure in the United States comes from inhaling dust or eating particles contaminated by paint chips.

Bryan joined the chase in his own truck and recorded Travis McMichael shooting Arbery at close range with a shotgun. While EV sales are continuing to grow, they are doing so at a slower pace, research shows. Elon Musk warned a slowdown in sales growth was coming when Tesla reported earnings on Wednesday. The Warren Buffett-backed EV maker, which sells its vehicles in more than 60 countries and recently overtook Tesla on global EV sales, put an early focus on affordable models such as the $10,000 Seagull. EV sales surged 40% year-on-year in the last three months of 2023 —a "strong result by any measure," as the industry research noted. Aran Waid, senior analyst at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, said growth in EV sales globally was continuing but that it had "fallen short of automaker expectations."

London CNN —Shares in Tesla plunged as much as 11% after the market opened Thursday, wiping $73 billion off the company’s market value hours after it warned of slowing growth in electric car sales and an existential threat from Chinese rivals. While it reported a sizeable 38% increase in deliveries last year compared with 2022, Tesla had previously targeted a 50% annual growth rate averaged over several years. At the time, investors were worried about the outlook for Tesla’s sales and profitability, as well as the health of the US economy. Dan Ives, an analyst with market research firm Wedbush, said Tesla’s earnings call provided investors with “minimal answers” to the company’s shrinking margins. China’s BYD beat Tesla in the final three months of last year, selling more cars than Elon Musk’s carmaker for the first time.

Washington CNN —The United Auto Workers union on Wednesday endorsed President Joe Biden, a long-awaited announcement that is an important pickup for the president. Biden won the endorsement of the UAW in the 2020 campaign, even though many rank-and-file members supported Trump. Ahead of endorsing Biden, UAW President Shawn Fain said the choice union workers face in 2024 “isn’t about who you like. … Donald Trump stands against everything we stand for as a union – as a society.”The choice between Trump and Biden, Fain said, was clear. Read previewNew Tesla Cybertruck owners might want to wash winter road grime off their pickup as soon as possible. Manuals for other Tesla models also advise immediate removal of corrosive substances — but "to prevent damage to the paint," rather than the exterior metal itself. Road salt is one of the biggest culprits of corrosion in cars, but typically, the undercarriage is most at risk since paint can protect the body panels. Chevrolet warns salt may damage the paint of its Silverado if it remains on the exterior for extended periods of time. Of course, depending on who you ask, the Cybertruck's lack of a finish on the steel may be a feature instead of a bug.

The bus station in Agadez, a remote city of low mud-brick buildings in the West African nation of Niger, is buzzing again. For years, this portal was closed, at least officially. The country’s government, friendly to Europe, outlawed migration out of Agadez, and in exchange the European Union poured hundreds of millions of dollars into Niger’s coffers and the local economy. But last summer, after generals in Niger seized power in a military coup, the European Union suspended financial support to the government — and in response, the generals severed the migration arrangement with the European Union in November. The gate is once again open, and a fresh flock of hopeful migrants is once again passing through, to the relief of many locals.

CEO Carlos Tavares says the company's new large platform is flexible enough to handle batteries and electric motors, gas-electric hybrids and internal combustion engines. The company can also build midsize to large vehicles on those underpinnings, including sedans, crossover vehicles, SUVs and even off-road Jeeps. Electric vehicle sales growth is already slowing in many countries with consumers balking at the added cost as well as limited range and too few charging stations. On Friday, Ford said it was cutting production of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup after weaker-than-expected electric vehicle sales growth. A midsize vehicle platform announced by the company last year has similar flexibility, the company said.

The Vision Pro, with its sky-high price tag, was always expected to be a smaller launch than something like the newest iPhone. Earlier this month, analyst and Apple supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the company would produce only 60,000 to 80,000 Vision Pro units for the initial launch. "Since the shipment is not large, I believe that Vision Pro will sell out soon after the release," Kuo wrote on X.

Read previewFord plans to cut production of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck once again, it said Friday, citing a problem nearly all automakers have struggled with in the past year: falling demand. About 1,400 employees will be impacted as the plant where Ford's flagship electric truck is produced, the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, transitions to just one shift per day starting on April 1, Ford said. AdvertisementFord sold fewer than 25,000 of the F-150 Lightning pickup in 2023 as it scaled back production. That still notched it a spot in the top 10 EVs by sales but is dwarfed by traditional F-150 sales of more than 700,000. Ford has also struggled to get dealers on board with its electric sales program, requiring a substantial investment on their part to install chargers and receive new training.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, poses during a presentation at the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan, New York, on April 5, 2023. Stellantis won't sell electrified vehicles such as hybrids and all-electric models at a loss like other automakers have, CEO Carlos Tavares said Friday. "Being in Europe as much as in the U.S., we are making money with the electrified vehicles," Tavares said during a roundtable Friday. "We are making money, and it is in our discipline to make sure that whatever we sell we make money with because, if not, then the company will not be sustainable." Stellantis currently has 25 EVs available globally and expects to launch another 23 through the end of this year.

Ford announced Friday it's reducing production of its F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck, starting April 1, due to slowing demand for EVs. The automaker said the Lightning cuts are being made to achieve the "optimal balance of production, sales growth and profitability." But since Ford is cutting back EV production, the automaker's goal of scaling up its EV buildout could be delayed. In fact, the Maverick Hybrid sales exceeded the F-150 Hybrid last year with a 67% increase to more than 52,300 vehicles. DETROIT – Ford Motor is increasing production of its Bronco SUV and Ranger pickup, while cutting production of its all-electric F-150 Lightning, the automaker said Friday. Ford said the production changes are intended to match production with customer demand. They mark the latest cuts or delays to production of EVs amid slower-than-expected customer demand. Customers love the F-150 Lightning, America's best-selling EV pickup," Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a release. The automaker will be reducing production of the Lightning at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Michigan to one production shift from two, impacting approximately 1,400 employees.

The third wild film I saw at the Eccles on Friday was “Sasquatch Sunset,” a wordless comedy that follows a quartet of grunting Bigfoots as they trek through the forest for a year. Two of the Sasquatches are played, under heavy prosthetics, by Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg, though you’d never know it was them unless you were told beforehand. (Well, maybe some people could clock Eisenberg as the most high-strung Bigfoot, if forced to grade these performances on a sliding sasquatch scale.) What starts off as slapstick becomes weirdly moving as we watch some of the sasquatches succumb to natural disasters. In the ’90s, every independent filmmaker dreamed of launching their career at this festival as the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh had.

CNN —Ford will shut down one of two production shifts in April at the Dearborn, Michigan, factory that builds the F-150 Lightning electric pickup. The move is part of “matching F-150 Lightning production to customer demand,” the company said Friday. While sales of electric vehicles increased in 2023, the growth was slower than many industry experts had expected. Ford still projects an increase in Lightning sales this year after a 55% jump to 24,000 trucks last year. The 24,000 in Lightning sales is still a small fraction of overall Ford F-series pickup sales.
