Mr. Trump and his defenders argue that the indictment against him is politically motivated. The key difference between the legal situations of Mr. Biden and Mr. Pence and that of Mr. Trump is not politics. investigation found that out of 30,000 emails sent to the State Department, 110 emails in 52 email chains contained classified information. But only “a very small number” of the emails contained classification markings that would have signaled the presence of classified information. Unless Mr. Trump pleads guilty (which seems very unlikely), it will be up to a jury to determine his guilt.

Sports leagues love competition, except against one another. The leagues make more money when they don’t have to compete for talent and audience. The PGA Tour will appoint a majority of the board and hold a majority voting interest in the combined entity. But the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, will start out as the exclusive investor in the entity, and Yasir al-Rumayyan, the wealth fund’s governor, will be the entity’s chairman. In this case the PGA Tour looks more swallowed than swallowing, but Ross told me, “From the branding point of view the PGA Tour was a monopoly and it will still be the dominant organizer with its new huge partner.”

And regulators could help monitor that such responses offer accurate and reliable information and resources. They’re underutilized already,” said John Ayers, an author of the study and a behavioral scientist at the University of California, San Diego. He said that now, while ChatGPT is still in development, is the time for public health experts and regulators to join forces with the chatbot’s developers to help curate responses to medical questions. The chatbot provided resources in two responses to a question about addiction, two responses for questions related to interpersonal violence and one response to a mental health-related question. “ChatGPT consistently provided evidence-based answers to public health questions, although it primarily offered advice rather than referrals,” the researchers wrote in their study.

LUCKY DOGS, by Helen SchulmanThat Harvey Weinstein hired a private international spy agency called Black Cube to help squash stories about his sex crimes always seemed stranger than fiction. In an author’s note, Helen Schulman states explicitly that her seventh novel, “Lucky Dogs,” was inspired by two players in this globe-spanning chapter of the Weinstein saga. “How could one woman do this to another woman?” Schulman had wondered, reading ragefully about the case. The question might sound naïve: Has she not seen the foundational Hollywood text “All About Eve”? But her imagined answer, in the form of this book, is deeply knowing, properly indignant and — maybe the best revenge — very funny.

That was why researchers took another look at the standard treatment for rectal cancer. But the radiation puts women into immediate menopause and damages sexual function in men and women. Yet radiation treatment, the study found, did not improve outcomes. For colon and rectal cancer specialists, the results can transform their patients’ lives, said Dr. Kimmie Ng, a co-director of the colon and rectal cancer center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, who was not an author of the study. “Now, especially, with patients skewing younger and younger, do they actually need radiation?” she asked.

Three major chemical companies on Friday said they would pay more than $1 billion to settle the first in a wave of claims that they and other companies contaminated drinking water across the country with so-called forever chemicals that have been linked to cancer and other illnesses. The companies — Chemours, DuPont and Corteva — said they had reached an agreement in principle to set up a $1.19 billion fund to help remove toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, from public drinking water systems. Bloomberg News also reported on Friday that 3M had reached a tentative deal worth “at least $10 billion” with U.S. cities and towns to resolve related PFAS claims. Sean Lynch, a spokesman for 3M, declined to comment on the report, which cited people familiar with the deal without naming them. They have sought billions of dollars in damages to deal with the health impacts and the cost of cleaning up and monitoring polluted sites.

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Reuters) - The bipartisan debt-ceiling deal that could clear Congress as soon as Thursday would stave off an imminent U.S. default, but might deliver less budget savings than Republicans have hoped for, according to nonpartisan budget analysts. The agreement ensures that President Joe Biden will not have to grapple with another debt-ceiling showdown until after the November 2024 election. That is less than the $4.8 trillion Republicans had initially sought, but still the largest deficit-reduction package since a 2011 deal that emerged from a similar debt-ceiling showdown. That would put more $1 trillion of the deal's anticipated savings at risk, according to the Penn Wharton Budget Model, a research group. The deal increases spending on defense and veterans' care, even as it aims to clamp down on other discretionary programs.

Why does Wall Street expect a rate hike in June?
  + stars: | 2023-05-28 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Wall Street expects the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in June. Not only that, it finally believes the central bank when it says it likely won’t cut rates this year. Futures traders expected a roughly 66% chance of a quarter point rate hike in June as of Friday afternoon, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. That’s a drastic about-face from even earlier this month, when Wall Street expected the central bank to slash rates multiple times this year starting as early as this summer. “If it comes in hotter than expected, it almost locks a rate hike in” for June, said Heppenstall.
CNN —Credit rating agencies are once again in the spotlight amid the ongoing high-stakes debt ceiling negotiations in Washington. What is the purpose of credit rating agencies? Put simply, credit rating agencies provide their opinions and issue a score evaluating the likelihood that a borrower will repay its debt. Rating agencies first rose to prominence over a century ago, but today, the three major agencies dominate the market. Bonsall has studied the effectiveness of credit rating agencies and their possible conflicts of interest.

Britain's EU exit largely severed its financial sector's previously unfettered access to the bloc, raising concerns over London's role as a global financial centre. As part of Brexit terms, the EU agreed to formalise cooperation between financial watchdogs. The MoU will create a joint EU-UK Financial Regulatory Forum, similar to one the EU already has with the United States. Joanna Penn, treasury minister in the UK parliament's upper house, welcomed the "positive move" given how EU and UK financial markets are deeply interconnected. The EU has granted 'equivalence' or EU market access to derivatives clearing houses in London until the end of June 2025.

President Biden is sending 1,500 troops to the southern border. Yet, his secretary of Homeland Security says employers "are desperate for workers." The COVID-era rule expired May 11, so the Biden administration is now sending troops to tamp down on border crossings. Despite taking such measures to police the border, Biden's Department of Homeland Security argued on the day that Title 42 ended that immigrant labor is needed to address America's labor shortage. As a result, native workers who dropped out of high school and typically earn $25,000 annually saw their earnings drop by between $800 and $1,500 each year, he estimated.

Biden administration rules released on Friday that will determine which companies and manufacturers can benefit from new solar industry tax credits are being criticized by U.S.-based makers of solar products, who say the guidelines do not go far enough to try to lure manufacturing back from China. The Treasury Department, in guidance issued on Friday, said it would offer a 10 percent additional tax credit for facilities assembling solar panels in the United States, even if they import the silicon wafers used to make those panels from foreign countries. Under the Biden administration’s new climate legislation, solar and wind farms can apply for a 30 percent tax credit on the costs of their facilities. Senior administration officials told reporters on Thursday that they were trying to take a balanced approach, one that leaned toward forcing supply chains to return to the United States. But China’s dominance of the global solar industry has created a tricky calculus for the Biden administration, which wants to promote U.S. manufacturing of solar products but also ensure a plentiful supply of low-cost solar panels to reduce carbon emissions.
