(AP) — President Joe Biden is set to visit naval installations in Virginia on Sunday for an early kickoff to the Thanksgiving holiday week. He plans to host a screening of the movie “Wonka” and have a “friendsgiving” meal with service members and their relatives. Later, the Bidens plan to help serve dinner with service members from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and the USS Gerald R. Ford at Norfolk Naval Station, the largest installation of its kind in the world, along with their families. In 2021, the Bidens visited the Army’s Fort Bragg in North Carolina for an early Thanksgiving meal in a hangar for about 250 service members and their families. The president and first lady plan to spend this Thanksgiving on Nantucket, a Massachusetts island.

The Marine Infantry Command’s claims are the first to come directly from the Ukrainian military about advances across one of Russia’s most significant strategic barriers. Earlier this week, Andriy Yermak, head of the president’s office, confirmed for the first time that Ukraine had established a foothold on the eastern side of the river. Ukraine provided no timeline for how long it took to establish its position on the eastern bank. “Neither side is currently capable of mounting decisive offensive operations on the land in the foreseeable future,” one official said. Ukraine said its troops killed more than 1,200 Russian soldiers and wounded more than 2,200 in a series of operations to establish its position on the eastern riverbank.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — K-pop superstar Rosé said Friday at a mental health awareness event hosted by first lady Jill Biden that it's important for the world to understand that famous people grapple with emotional struggles, too. Rosé, a part of the supergroup BLACKPINK, said having a large social media following makes her feel vulnerable, particularly when people are critical. “People who are older -- we never, ever spoke about mental health,” Biden said. Apple CEO Tim Cook opened the event but blanked briefly when the teleprompter went out. Cook recovered, telling the crowd he'd “go ahead and ad lib," then thanked everyone for coming and introduced the first lady.

Joe Manchin, West Virginia’s outgoing senator, bristles at the thought of being a spoiler in the 2024 presidential election. While he’s typically shied away from addressing the topic directly, his remarks on a potential presidential bid this week crystallized. Originally seeking the Democratic nomination against Biden, Kennedy opted instead to run as an independent, where polls show now show him siphoning support from Trump. Also running is Cornel West, the academic, activist and far-left candidate who’s polling around 4% to 6%. Enter Manchin, who stands to muddy the waters for the president and former president even more than they already are.

A Stressful World Drives the Return of Zodiac Jewelry

Perhaps the most famous are the bold gold zodiac medallions the house introduced in the 1950s and again in the 1970s. Those vintage pieces are in high demand again, along with its latest series of statement-making hard stone and gold pendants carved with the signs of the zodiac. It’s a sign of the times: Designers and retailers say zodiac symbols are now among the most popular modern jewelry talismans. During these tumultuous times, more people are turning to jewelry with meaning and pieces that are personal and lasting, said Briony Raymond, a fine jewelry designer in New York who offers both vintage astrological pieces and her own designs. “These talismanic jewels can be comforting and put things in the context of the bigger universe,” she said.

“No company is too big to ensure that their products do not damage our environment and public health. All New Yorkers have a basic right to clean water, yet PepsiCo’s irresponsible packaging and marketing endanger Buffalo’s water supply, environment, and public health,” James said in a statement. PepsiCo is the single largest identifiable contributor to the plastic waste contaminating the Buffalo River, according to the lawsuit. Microplastics have also been found in fish species that are known to inhabit Lake Erie and the Buffalo River, as well as Buffalo's drinking water supply, according to the lawsuit. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Monday announced a White House initiative to improve how the federal government approaches and funds research into the health of women, who make up more than half of the U.S. population but remain understudied and underrepresented in health research. The White House Initiative on Women's Health Research will be led by first lady Jill Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council. Bertagnolli gave a broad answer in which she said far too little is known about women's health through all stages of life. Biden's memorandum directs members to report back within 45 days with “concrete recommendations" to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of women's health issues. Mazure joined the first lady's office from the Yale School of Medicine, where she created its Women's Health Research Center.

The distinction is politically significant as the public has become increasingly frustrated over homeless camps in Los Angeles and other California cities, seeing them as a blight on neighborhoods and a threat to public safety. Some critics were quick this weekend to suggest that homeless campers might have been responsible for the latest blaze, which shuttered a freeway traversed by about 300,000 vehicles daily. “It’s an ongoing issue, but I don’t want to conflate it with the source of this fire,” Mr. de León said. “We need to see where the investigation goes.”Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles similarly urged caution and asked the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions about who had set the fire. There is no reason to assume that the origin of this fire or the reason this fire happened was because there were unhoused individuals nearby.”

Opinion: Marjorie Taylor Greene botches the explanation

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —On the day after Republicans lost pivotal races in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

The fallout has extended to Washington, where Republicans are hunting for evidence that could be used to impeach President Joe Biden. Republicans have highlighted a $200,000 personal check from Jim to Joe Biden on the same day — March 1, 2018 — that Jim Biden received an equal amount from Americore. Concerns that Jim Biden’s business ventures and missteps would cloud Joe Biden’s political career stretch back decades. He, along with other non-major-party candidates, has a real chance to affect the outcome of the 2024 election. Perot is a bit of an exception in that independent or third-party candidates usually fade as an election nears. George Wallace topped out at 21% in pre-election polling as a third-party candidate before picking up 14% when the votes were cast. Given all that, it’s no surprise we’re seeing other independent and third-party candidates jumping or potentially jumping into the 2024 race. But the West Virginia senator’s Thursday announcement that he won’t seek reelection next year only refreshed a perennial question arising from his savvy instinct for accumulating power: What exactly is he up to? Second, the announcement immediately stoked speculation that Manchin is mulling a third-party presidential bid. Manchin’s decision to quit Washington comes as a formidable potential Republican challenger, West Virginia Gov. And if Manchin can’t win in the MAGA stronghold of West Virginia, it’s impossible to believe any other Democrat can. West Virginia was once a Democratic bastion, however.
