High-Yield Savings Accounts Are Still a Good Deal
  + stars: | 2024-11-22 | by ( Ann Carrns | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
You’ve probably been discouraged to see the interest rate on your high-yield savings account fall during the past couple of months. But your money is still earning much more than it would in a traditional savings account — and more than inflation. Rates paid on cash in savings accounts have been dropping since the Federal Reserve began cutting its key interest rate in September as inflation cooled. Even so, the rates paid on federally insured high-yield savings accounts, many offered by banks that operate solely or mostly online, are still beating inflation, which was 2.6 percent on an annual basis in October. “High-yield savings accounts are still attractive relative to traditional savings accounts,” particularly for emergency or “rainy day” funds that savers want to be able to tap into quickly, said Alan Bazaar, chief executive and co-chief investment officer at Hollow Brook Wealth Management in Katonah, N.Y.

A majority of full-time workers, 66%, got a raise in the last year whether they asked for one or not, according to an October survey of 2,049 people from LendingTree. And not everyone is asking for a raise at equal rates: Just 35% of women discussed getting a raise, compared with 49% of men, according to LendingTree data. By age range, Gen Z and millennial workers (ages 18 to 43) are most comfortable negotiating for a pay increase. However, the second most-common reason people took a pay cut, at 17%, was in order to take another job with less stress. Roughly one-third of people who experienced a pay cut in the last year saw their salary drop by less than $5,000.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's casinos saw their operating profits decline by nearly 14% in the third quarter of this year, figures released Friday by New Jersey gambling regulators show. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement issued statistics showing that the nine casinos had a collective gross operating profit of $236.5 million in the third quarter. “Consumer demand may have been an issue for Atlantic City’s casino operators in summer 2024,” said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City gambling industry. Revenue from things other than gambling also underperformed in the third quarter at $511.6 million, down 5% from a year earlier. Among internet-only entities, Caesars Interactive NJ earned $4.8 million, down 7.8%, and Resorts Digital, the former online arm of Resorts casino, earned $1.5 million, down 4.8%.

In an environment of high valuations, one of two "catalysts" could cause a market correction. It has a price-to-earnings ratio above 27, and some have described it as expensive by almost every measure. "We do think that a correction would be healthy, but you will need some type of catalyst for that correction to take place. [It is] still quite healthy, but it is slow, right? "If that continues to slow a bit more, if we were to see inflation tick up again, that could be a catalyst," Arcese said.

Bringing people together, showing determination and being a good listener are some of the qualities younger generations look for in leaders. Texas education officials on Friday approved a new elementary school curriculum that draws from the Bible, the final step of a contentious effort to expand religious instruction in the state. The reading and language arts curriculum, which will be optional for schools, could serve as a model for conservative Christian leaders in other states. Starting in August, the new Texas curriculum, for kindergarten through fifth grade, will be available to districts. The state serves more than two million elementary students in its public schools. The curriculum incorporates into English lessons stories from the Bible such as Jesus and his Sermon on the Mount, the parable of the Prodigal Son and the Old Testament tale of Esther.

He was Trump’s former budget director during his first administration when Vought oversaw a widespread deregulation push. WNBA star Cameron Brink had to learn how to negotiate her worth sooner than most 22-year-olds. Despite suffering a torn ACL in June that sidelined her rookie season, Brink's momentum off the court hasn't slowed. "Building my confidence in negotiations has been a journey for me, but I remind myself that my skills and hard work are valuable," Brink told CNBC Make It in an email. The most important step she takes to prepare for any negotiation, Brink says, is to research the companies she negotiates with. By contrast, the highest-paid players in the NBA are earning more than $50 million a year — and that's before factoring in sponsorships.

But with living costs pinching even high earners and the fact that more money almost always brings individuals more happiness , it's understandable that Americans say you need a substantial salary to be considered successful. While the average salary Americans say they need to be successful is high compared with what the average person is currently earning, Gen Z sets their sights even higher. The average salary adults between the ages of 18 and 27 say they need to be successful is $587,797, Empower found. On the night he won a second term, President-elect Donald J. Trump rejoiced in the moment. “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” he boasted. In the two weeks since, his campaign has repeatedly heralded his “landslide,” even to market Trump merchandise like the “Official Trump Victory Glass.”But by traditional numeric measures, Mr. Trump’s victory was neither unprecedented nor a landslide. In fact, he prevailed with one of the smallest margins of victory in the popular vote since the 19th century and generated little of the coattails of a true landslide. The collapse of Matt Gaetz’s prospective nomination for attorney general on Thursday demonstrated the challenges for Mr. Trump in forcing a Republican Congress to defer to his more provocative ideas.

Russia has supplied North Korea with antiaircraft missiles in return for the deployment of its troops to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine, South Korea’s national security adviser said on Friday. In recent weeks, North Korea has sent an estimated 11,000 troops, some of whom have joined Russian forces in their fight to retake territories occupied by Ukraine in Russia’s Kursk region, according to South Korean and United States officials. It has also sent close to 20,000 shipping containers of weapons to Russia since the summer of 2023, including artillery guns and shells, short-range ballistic missiles and multiple-rocket launchers, South Korean officials have said. In return, North Korea has been widely expected to seek Russian help in modernizing its conventional armed forces and advancing its nuclear weapons program and missiles. One of the biggest weaknesses of the North Korean military has been its poor, outdated air defense system, while the United States and its allies in South Korea and Japan run fleets of high-tech war planes, including F-35 stealth fighter jets. “We understand that Russia has provided related equipment and anti-air missiles to shore up the poor air defense for Pyongyang,” the North Korean capital, South Korea’s national security adviser, Shin Won-shik, said in an interview with SBS-TV on Friday.

Four big reasons to own gold into 2025

On Friday, spot gold rose about 1% amid increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine . Secondly, the global interest rate-cutting cycle will also stretch into 2025, which will serve as another driver of higher gold prices. Moreover, a push among central banks to diversify their reserves away from the dollar could also provide some additional support for gold, he said. "We expect the de-dollarization trend among central banks and private asset managers to continue," Khandelwal said. "We estimate central banks bought around 900 metric tons of gold in 2024, and these volumes can be sustained well above the prior decade's average of around 325 metric tons a year."

The revelations highlight the rising cyberthreats tied to geopolitics and nation-state actor rivals of the U.S., but inside the federal government, there's disagreement on how to fight back, with some advocates calling for the creation of an independent federal U.S. Cyber Force. Talent shortages, inconsistent training, and misaligned missions, are undermining CYBERCOM's capacity to respond effectively to complex cyber threats, it says. Known for his assertive national security measures, Trump's 2018 National Cyber Strategy emphasized embedding cyber capabilities across all elements of national power and focusing on cross-departmental coordination and public-private partnerships rather than creating a standalone cyber entity. Austin Berglas, a former head of the FBI's cyber program in New York who worked on consolidation efforts inside the Bureau, believes a separate cyber force could enhance U.S. capabilities by centralizing resources and priorities. "When I first took over the [FBI] cyber program … the assets were scattered," said Berglas, who is now the global head of professional services at supply chain cyber defense company BlueVoyant.

Sexual misconduct allegations against Matt Gaetz had drawn scrutiny after Mr. Trump said he wanted to nominate him for attorney general. Mr. Trump moved quickly to replace Mr. Gaetz with another conservative favorite. Federal prosecutors ultimately dropped the case against Mr. Gaetz, but their chart of payments was obtained by the ethics committee, which was investigating whether Mr. Gaetz had sex with the woman when she was underage. After she turned 18, Mr. Gaetz paid for sex with her on at least two other occasions, the person said. Mr. Trump seemed attracted to Mr. Gaetz as attorney general especially because of the former congressman’s willingness to blow things up.
