Presenting the new forecasts, Erdogan said that tight monetary policy would lower inflation to single digits, adding Turkey will not compromise on economic expansion as policies are adjusted. It trimmed GDP growth forecasts to 4.4% this year and 4% next year, which is still higher than most economists expect, from 5% and 5.5% previously. The economy is expected to slow through year-end - and ahead of nationwide municipal elections set for March next year - as stimulus tied to the May elections fades and as the policy rate hikes, to 25% from 8.5%, start to weigh. A Reuters poll last month showed expectations of 2.9% full-year growth, lower than trend in the emerging market economy that seeks to reverse a years-long exodus of foreign investors. Inflation will "be very high for an extended period of time, which will trigger second-round effects such as wage settlements."

Riyadh's decision to extend its 1 million bpd voluntary cut will be reviewed monthly to consider whether to deepen the cut or increase production, state news agency SPA said on Tuesday. It has been cutting output and exports in tandem with Saudi Arabia on top of existing OPEC+ supply reductions. Russia had said it would cut oil exports voluntarily by 500,000 bpd, about 5% of its output, in August and by 300,000 bpd in September. Although Saudi Arabia was widely expected to extend its voluntary cuts into October, and Russia had indicated that it too planned on expanding its cut through next month, the three month extension was unexpected. Brent, which is used to price over three-quarters of the world's traded oil, has been rising since late June, after Riyadh first announced its voluntary cuts.

Qantas' CEO is stepping down from his role two months early and will receive a $24 million bonus. AdvertisementAdvertisementAlan Joyce, CEO of Australian national airline Qantas, is facing criticism for the $24 million golden goodbye he will receive after announcing that he is stepping down from his role early on Monday. "If the Board allows Mr Joyce to walk away with $24 million after illegally sacking 1,700 people, gouging customers and while subject to an ACCC prosecution, it will be the swindle of the century," Sheldon said. If Mr Joyce walks away with his $24 million, he will make their annual salary in less than 6 hours." Was it as cool as playing tennis with Venus (if you can characterize my on-court performance relative to hers as “playing tennis”)? And I was amazed as we motored across the state, lock by lock through the Erie Canal, a waterway that I previously knew of only from middle school geography class. Yes, I’m a little obsessed with the Erie Canal — an outcome to reporting this story that I never anticipated. Because so much of my article about Geraldo Rivera needed to be about Geraldo Rivera, my cutting room floor is covered with details about the Canal. Murmu is hosting a reception for G20 leaders during the group's summit on Saturday and invitations were sent from her office. India is also called Bharat, Bharata, Hindustan - its pre-colonial names - in Indian languages and these are used interchangeably by the public and officially. High offices in the country have typically stuck to titles such as President of India, Prime Minister of India and Chief Justice of India while communicating in English. Supporters of the name change in the invitation said British colonial rulers had coined the name India to overshadow Bharat and forge a British legacy. Hindu groups linked to BJP said the G20 summit provided the best opportunity to shed India's colonial baggage.

Gina Cass-Gottlieb, the watchdog’s chair, is targeting a fine of at least A$250 million ($162 million), she told ABC’s RN radio programme. Qantas customers can now get a cash refund, while credits issued by the group’s budget airline, Jetstar, now last indefinitely. A view shows the interior of Equatic's pilot ocean carbon removal project at the Tuas Desalination Plant in western Singapore, August 30, 2023. As scientists call for more research into ocean carbon dioxide removal (OCDR), Singapore's Public Utilities Board (PUB) has built a plant that uses electricity to extract CO2 from seawater, allowing it to absorb more greenhouse gas from the atmosphere when it is pumped back out into the ocean. At the plant, seawater is run through an electrolyser, which converts dissolved CO2 into calcium carbonate and produces hydrogen. On Tuesday, more than 200 scientists said in an open letter that OCDR research should be prioritised not only to maximise its potential, but also head off potential risks. But billions of tons of CO2 need to be removed from the atmosphere, and more investment in OCDR research was needed urgently, he said.

Welfare payments, dubbed "citizens' money", for more than 5.5 million jobless in Germany will rise to 563 euros ($605.06)from 502 euros per month for single people from next year. They will receive up to 636 euros per month for their first child and another 530 euros for every other child. Germans are divided whether the increase in welfare payments is justified with 45% in favour and 44% against it, the survey of 1005 respondents showed. So, which Wall Street firms are still letting employees work from home at least part of the time? On days employees are in, the firm focuses on taking "advantage of our shared location," it reads. At that time, the firm called for its employees to come into the office a minimum of three days a week. Reuters —Qantas Airways said on Tuesday that long-serving CEO Alan Joyce would exit the company two months earlier than previously flagged as a reputational turbulence engulfs Australia’s flagship carrier. Joyce’s early retirement will see CEO Designate Vanessa Hudson, the first woman to lead the century-old airline, take charge on Wednesday. Chairman Richard Goyder said the executive transition came at a “challenging time” for the airline and its staff. Qantas had announced a raft of leadership changes in June in a bid to increase focus on key areas as the airline completes its post-pandemic recovery. The airline said newly appointed Chief Financial Officer Rob Marcolina will also start early alongside Hudson.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The boss of Australian airline Qantas said Tuesday he would leave his job immediately — two months earlier than planned — following a series of embarrassing revelations about the company, including allegations it sold tickets for flights that had already been canceled. The airline said Vanessa Hudson would take over as managing director and group chief executive from Wednesday. The announcement came after a difficult few weeks for Qantas and Joyce. Qantas previously acknowledged its standards had fallen well short of expectations as the airline emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline has since come under pressure to pay back the AU$2.7 billion it received from the Australian government during the coronavirus pandemic.

Polar bears live in 19 populations across the Arctic and are found in Canada, the United States, Russia, Greenland and Norway, according to conservation organization Polar Bears International. They found that the number of days polar bears were forced to go without food increased as greenhouse gas emissions accumulated. That allowed them to calculate the impact of cumulative emissions on the rate of polar bear survival. This would be about 60-plus gigatons over the 30-plus year life span of a polar bear in the southern Beaufort Sea. “They found that when we emit more carbon dioxide, it directly affects how many polar bear cubs can survive.

Russia is sinking ships to protect the Kerch Bridge to Crimea from Ukraine's naval drones. The barrier is estimated to be less than a mile in length — a small fraction of the massive 12-mile-long bridge. The ships Russia appears to be sinking were destined for the scrapyard, but could have been valuable for recycling parts. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn July, an explosion apparently caused by a surface drone rocked a section of the Kerch Bridge, wrecking the roadbed and killing two adults. With Crimea being among the most important territory for Kyiv to reclaim in the war, the Kerch Bridge is an important bond to sever.

The unveiling of a nearly 200-year-old time capsule yielded great disappointment earlier this week, when the box — opened at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., during a livestream watched by thousands — appeared to contain only dirt. After days of tense speculation, Paul Hudson, the academy’s archaeologist, peered into the roughly one-foot-square lead vessel with a flashlight and soon declared that “the box didn’t quite meet expectations.”As it turned out — Mr. Hudson just had to look closer. After Monday’s event, Mr. Hudson returned the box to his lab. The next day, he dug deeper into the container and unearthed six silver coins dating from 1795 to 1828 and a commemorative medal from 1826, Jennifer Voigtschild, the academy’s command historian, said on Thursday. In the moments after the box was first opened, Ms. Voigtschild said, she felt “baffled that there would be this very, very, well constructed box, that would have nothing in it.” But, she said, as Mr. Hudson began removing pieces of matter from the box while onstage and examining them, her hope was somewhat revived.

Discovery chief executive could have waited to appoint a singular leader of CNN after firing his former hand-picked network boss Chris Licht. By appointing a new chief executive and chairman, he’s taking an inherent risk as the 2024 presidential cycle heats up. Under former network boss Jeff Zucker, staffers never questioned what CNN’s mission statement was. It will be illuminating to hear more from Thompson on this matter, given he will also be responsible for CNN’s editorial. There is time for leaders like Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the top House Democrat and a New Yorker, to intervene if they want to. While the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee rarely interferes in open primaries, there is a tradition of less direct maneuvering to boost preferred candidates and edge others out. The leader’s allies argue that the competition will strengthen their nominees and brush off concerns that Democrats will be short on funds. “Leader Jeffries has no plan to endorse in any Democratic primary in New York,” said Christie Stephenson, his spokeswoman. “He is confident that whoever emerges in these competitive districts will be strongly positioned to defeat the extreme MAGA Republican crowd.”
