Aston Martin will keep the upgrades coming

LONDON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Aston Martin will keep the upgrades flowing after going into Formula One's August break with Fernando Alonso third in the championship behind Red Bull's dominant leader Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. With both titles a foregone conclusion, champions Red Bull -- winners of all 12 races so far -- and some others are turning their attention to next year's car but Aston Martin have other ideas. Aston Martin enjoy more wind tunnel time than top rivals as a consequence of their low ranking last year. After 12 of the 22 races last year, Aston Martin were languishing in ninth place and had scored only 19 points compared to their current haul of 196. "Obviously you need to see what directions you take, depending on what happens... in all the push, push, push for development we also have to realise that we have made big steps and it is important to also zoom out and see what you have achieved."

Verstappen, who started sixth after a five-place grid penalty, extended his championship lead over Perez to 125 points -- effectively five races -- after taking the chequered flag 22.3 seconds ahead of the Mexican. He is heading for a third title with plenty of races to spare, the only real doubt being where he might seal it. Charles Leclerc, who started on pole for Ferrari, completed the podium with Lewis Hamilton fourth and securing fastest lap for Mercedes. McLaren's Piastri had been on top of the timesheets until the final seconds when double world champion Verstappen went 0.11 quicker with a lap of one minute 49.056 seconds on a drying track. The standalone sprint format is being used at Spa for the first time, the third of six such events this season. Piastri said he "couldn’t have got much more out of that" and was happy to be on the front row. The provisional pole changed hands swiftly in the final shootout, with Hamilton fastest then Red Bull's Sergio Perez, Gasly, Sainz and Piastri before Verstappen's predictable final flourish. "It's good to get a clean end to qualifying," said Verstappen, with more rain forecast later.

Japan down Costa Rica to put one foot in last 16

Playing through Mina Tanaka in an advanced midfield role rather than playmaker Yui Hasegawa as they had against Zambia, Japan were already well in the ascendant before the double blow that knocked the stuffing out of the Central Americans. Costa Rica, who were beaten 3-0 by Spain in their opener, were barely able to land a blow on their opponents and it looked from then on only a matter of many goals Japan would rack up. Despite having 25 attempts on goal, however, Japan were unable to add to their tally - a shortcoming that might concern coach Futoshi Ikeda with tougher challenges lying ahead. Japan face Spain in Wellington on Monday in a match that will almost certainly decide which of the two sides top the group, while Costa Rica will play Zambia in Hamilton at the same time as both sides continue to seek their first World Cup win. SOMEBODY’S FOOL, by Richard RussoWelcome back to North Bath, scrappy sibling to the larger, wealthier Schuyler Springs, down the road in woodsy upstate New York. While Schuyler Springs is famous for wine bars, pricey restaurants and a racetrack, North Bath (or “Bath”) prides itself on a rustic vibe, greasy spoons and scrapyards and grand Victorian fixer-uppers. Set over three days in February 2010, the novel opens with a bleak snapshot: The recession has wreaked havoc on local businesses and families. Russo reprises the cast from “Nobody’s Fool” (1993) and “Everybody’s Fool” (2016), framing their foibles as social comedy in the mode of Charles Portis or Charles Dickens. (There’s an allusion to “Great Expectations.”) As with both authors, tumult brews beneath sunny surfaces.
