CNN —A weekend of ferocious political exchanges laid out the tumultuous reality of the 2024 White House campaign less than a year from Election Day. The fight for the GOP nomination is about far more than a horse race between candidates. Time is quickly ebbing for one of his distant Republican rivals to recast the race less than two months before voting begins. No lawyer, White House staffer, campaign adviser, political party or institution has ever been able to curb Trump’s impulses. “We are turning up the heat and brightening the spotlight on exactly what it would look like if he’s allowed back in the White House,” a Biden campaign official told CNN’s Arlette Saenz of Trump.

U.S. Subsidies Fuel Boom in Global Auto Trade

Chinese-made cars await export at the port of Yantai, Shandong province. China’s auto exports were up 71% in the third quarter compared with average monthly exports in 2021. Photo: Cfoto/Zuma PressSINGAPORE—Auto exports from Europe and Asia are surging as the U.S. and other countries lavish subsidies on electric vehicles and dealers replenish inventories that even now aren’t back to prepandemic levels. The boom in autos contrasts with broader weakness in exports as the global economy slows. The trend offers a glimpse of how the West’s embrace of industrial policies aimed at stimulating domestic manufacturing and reducing the use of fossil fuels is causing wrinkles in patterns of world trade.

Extra Fees Drive Assisted-Living Profits
  + stars: | 2023-11-19 | by ( Jordan Rau | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Assisted-living centers have become an appealing retirement option for hundreds of thousands of boomers who can no longer live independently, promising a cheerful alternative to the institutional feel of a nursing home. But their cost is so crushingly high that most Americans can’t afford them. These highly profitable facilities often charge $5,000 a month or more and then layer on extra fees at every step. The facilities charge extra to help residents get to the shower, bathroom or dining room; to deliver meals to their rooms; to have staff check-ins for daily “reassurance” or simply to remind residents when it’s time to eat or take their medication. Some even charge for routine billing to a resident’s insurance for care.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's wide-open U.S. Senate race shifts to Sacramento on Saturday as the leading Democratic candidates work to woo activists in search of a state party endorsement ahead of the March primary. The state's last two U.S. Senate races — in 2016 and 2018 — each featured two Democrats. The Senate candidates will each take turns speaking during a forum shortly before delegates cast their votes. An endorsement from the state Democratic Party can boost a campaign in a competitive primary, but it doesn't necessarily signal how the wider electorate feels about the race as party delegates tend to be more liberal. “The reality is, is that you can’t win the House if you don’t win seats here in California."

When Revel brought 68 electric mopeds to a Brooklyn storefront in 2018, it set out to show New Yorkers that getting around the city could be fun. Riders could hop onto an electric-blue moped instead of cramming into the subway or getting stuck in car traffic. But now, five years later, the mopeds will soon disappear entirely. On Saturday, Revel — facing the proliferation of other options to get around the city and safety concerns that have kept some people away — will pull its mopeds out of New York and send them to a salvage center. It will also shut down the moped service in San Francisco after previously ending it in other cities.

Leonid meteor shower peaks this weekend
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Taylor Nicioli | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Up next for end-of-year celestial spectaculars is the Leonid meteor shower, set to produce bright meteors with persistent trains streaking across the night sky. The moon will be 23% full on the night of the shower’s peak, according to the American Meteor Society. Leo is the meteor shower’s radiant, which is the point where the phenomenon appears to originate from, she explained. As the comet travels around the sun, it leaves a trail of rocks and dust that appears as the annual Leonid meteor shower when Earth moves through the debris while on its own orbital path. “Getting out and seeing any meteor shower for the first time is always fun,” she said.

Early this morning, three of my colleagues visited Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical complex, which has become central to the war between Israel and Hamas. There, the Israeli military escorted them to a stone-and-concrete shaft with a staircase descending into the earth. It was evidence, Israeli officials asserted, of a Hamas military facility under the hospital. But it did offer my colleagues a rare opportunity to witness the wartime conditions inside Gaza City. They drove into a neighborhood Patrick had visited a dozen times over the past three years, yet he could hardly recognize it.

The Leonid meteor shower is due to peak between Friday night and the early hours of dawn Saturday. The Leonids could offer up to 15 fireballs an hour, per NASA. AdvertisementThe Leonid meteor shower is peaking tonight and could offer skygazers around the world the chance to see up to 15 fireballs an hour. The viewing conditions should be "quite favorable" as the moon will be in its first quarter, so it is unlikely to outshine the meteors with its glare, the Royal Museums Greenwich said on its website. While NASA states the Leonids usually offer up to 15 fireballs per hour, the Royal Museums Greenwich is slightly less optimistic, as it expects only up to 10 fireballs an hour.

CNN —A series of videos exclusively obtained by NBC News show actor Alec Baldwin handling at least one prop gun during filming of the movie “Rust,” days before a deadly on-set shooting. The new videos are among dozens requested from Rust Movie Productions LLC by special prosecutors in the spring, NBC reported. CNN has reached out to attorneys for Baldwin and prosecutors for comment but has not heard back. His attorneys told CNN in October they will address the case in court. “It is unfortunate that a terrible tragedy has been turned into this misguided prosecution,” Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, told CNN in a statement.

The footage was recorded days before Baldwin's prop gun fired a live round of ammunition on set, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. It isn't clear how much of the footage prosecutors reviewed or whether they reviewed any of the five videos. It is so far the most substantive film footage of Baldwin acting scenes and firing prop guns on the set of "Rust." The third video shows Baldwin in character repeatedly firing a prop gun before he runs out of dummy rounds. In the fourth and fifth videos, Baldwin stops filming to check on the safety of the crew.

Golf plays on a different axis in the “Land of the Midnight Sun,” and nowhere is that difference more pronounced than at Tromsø golf club, the world’s northernmost 18-hole golf course. Arguably though, it’s overhead where Tromsø golf club really separates itself. We’ve reached a searing milestone: In just five weeks of war, half of 1 percent of Gaza’s population has been killed. The second myth is that Palestinians can be put off indefinitely, strung along by Israel, the United States and other countries. I’m all for surgical strikes against Hamas and I would be delighted if Israel managed to end extremism in Gaza. It also means renouncing what Netanyahu called “mighty vengeance” that transforms entire neighborhoods of Gaza into rubble, with bodies buried underneath. A spokesman for the Biden campaign called the election “deeply consequential for young people,” and pledged to build on a strong turnout from younger voters in the 2022 midterm elections. Exit polls in 2020 showed that voters 18 to 29 made up 20% of the Georgia electorate – the only state of the top six battlegrounds where the percentage of young voters exceeded the national share of 17%. Then, Biden won young Georgia voters by 13 points, according to exit polls. I think that brings a lot of mistrust.”Christopher Lambry, a Morehouse freshman, said he was concerned at the softening of support for Biden among many younger Black voters, particularly men. “Just as we hold Trump accountable,” said Singleton, the Morehouse senior who saw Biden early last year, “we have to hold Biden accountable.”

These and other treasures were quickly taken off display and brought to special bunkers to ensure they are not damaged during the war. But this is a different situation so we have to act accordingly," said Hagit Maoz, curator of the Shrine of the Book at Jerusalem's Israel Museum. The last time the museum removed the display, Maoz said, was during the 1991 Gulf War when Iraq fired missiles at Israel. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art took similar precautions. "These works of art have experienced war, some of them survived World War Two," said museum director Tania Coen-Uzzielli.

It also serves as a central artery for commuters making their way to and from the San Gabriel Valley, a constellation of cities with more than 1.5 million residents east of Los Angeles. During rush hour (and sometimes any random hour), it is where drivers sit bumper to bumper, restlessly inching forward. The recent fire that shut down a nearly two-mile stretch of the freeway created what would seem to be a disaster for a city already swamped with traffic troubles. And the kicker: It will be weeks before the affected stretch of Interstate 10 can reopen again. Yet for many residents, the repercussions have felt less catastrophic and more like just another Los Angeles annoyance.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

As a couple, they have $285,100 in debt and currently spend around 154% of their monthly income, they told self-made millionaire Ramit Sethi on his "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" podcast last month. "Never make major purchase decisions based on monthly payment," Sethi says. A low monthly payment can lure you into a number of different financial decisions that work out fine in the short-term, but can cause trouble down the line.

Lending data from China's central bank offers a glimpse of government priorities: as of the end of September, outstanding loans to the troubled property sector fell 0.2% year-on-year but lending to the manufacturing sector jumped 38.2%. This time, the government's focus is narrower, targeting high-tech and "advanced manufacturing", a goal laid out in 2021 in the 14th five-year plan. It grew 11.3% in the first nine months of 2023 year-on-year, compared with 6.3% for overall manufacturing investment, according to data from China's National Bureau of Statistics. For example, Guangdong province has increased lending to both high-tech and advanced manufacturing by about 45%, state media reported. During the first half of 2023, outstanding loans to the high-tech manufacturing sector in the eastern province of Shandong jumped 67%.
