Best Buy, Lowe’s and Kohl’s all reported sales declines during their most recent quarter Tuesday and are forecasting holiday sales to drop from a year ago. In 2021, Holiday shopping sales spiked by 14% and grew by a healthy 5% last year. But Moody’s Investors Service said in a report today that consumers are “losing spending steam” and holiday sales will grow by just 1% to 3% this year. “Retailers offering a combination of value and non-discretionary essentials will see their sales outperform the broader retail industry this holiday season,” according to Moody’s. “One trend that’s sticking is a longer holiday season.

Much of the gains in the S & P 500 this year can be attributed to the "Magnificent Seven" stocks. The S & P 500 has rocketed nearly 19% in the year to date. His 2024 price target for the S & P 500 is 4,500. But, he said, "There's going to be … a very good stock picking opportunity, probably away from those seven [stocks] … where there should be more opportunities in the 493." "In today's volatile interest rate environment, we see this cohort offering a balance of relative performance stability along with attractive growth properties," Morgan Stanley said.

Cooking the perfect turkey is hard enough on its own without worrying about stuffing, cranberry sauce, casseroles and mashed potatoes. By the time dessert rolls around, the thought of making pie dough, blending a pumpkin pie filling and baking it to perfection can feel like a bridge too far. But if you want to outsource dessert to a supermarket near you, you'll need to choose from countless options. CNBC Make It tried a quintet of pies from a variety of national and regional chains to determine the best store-bought option. Staffers were asked to sample pie from the following five chains and select their favorite.

Target is testing a new self-checkout policy

New York CNN —Target is testing a new self-checkout policy as retailers are finding the cashier-less technology can put off customers. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer. Target and other retailers had expanded self-checkout machines in recent years. Self-checkout machines sometimes break. Target said that merchandise losses, known as shrink, were not a factor in testing new self-checkout policies.

Contrary to popular perception, falling inflation and interest rate cuts won't necessarily be good for stocks, according to Morgan Stanley's Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson. And falling inflation is bad for stocks because rising prices are what drives earnings, he explained. "Whenever inflation is falling like it is today, it's typically not good for the average stock because it's not good for earnings growth," Wilson explained. The bad news is that "it's pretty clear" that inflation is falling, he said. "So now that inflation is coming down, and they start cutting, just be careful what that means for stocks.

"The town is basically one giant Airbnb," David Francis, an Oklahoma state official, told the Times. Unpaved roads plague rental owners, as does unreliable water infrastructure, which is essential to maintain the hot tubs that keep guests happy. Some cabin owners who bought properties recently, when prices were high, also worry that there aren't enough traveler bookings to make their investments worthwhile. It's enough of a gap, though, to deflate some new rental owners' dreams. "I hope I don't have to sell the cabin," Winegar said.

The bad news: Consumers aren't expected to spend more this holiday season. With spending in line with last year, this holiday shopping season becomes a market share story — a zero-sum game. Foot Locker (FL) has issues outside of the holiday season such as an inventory glut, an overreliance on Nike (NKE) and the need to shut down unprofitable stores.
