The outlook for solar panel company Sunrun is more uncertain in 2023, according to Barclays. Analyst Christine Cho downgraded shares to equal weight from overweight, and lowered her price target, citing the likelihood for weaker demand ahead for U.S. residential solar energy. Sunrun shares are higher by more than 8% in 2023, after underperforming the previous two years. The analyst's $35 price target, dropped from $44, still implies more than 34% upside from Tuesday's closing price of $26.09. Separately, the analyst downgraded shares of SunPower to underweight from overweight, and lowered her price target to $18 from $26.

Jan 22 (Reuters) - Most major Gulf markets ended higher on Sunday, reflecting Friday's rise in oil prices driven by prospects that an upbeat economic growth outlook from China could signal increased fuel demand in the world's second-largest economy. Oil, which fuels the region's economies, settled up about $1 a barrel on Friday, with Brent crude at $87.63 a barrel, up $1.47 or 1.7%. CAIRO, Jan 21 (Reuters) - The founder and former CEO of Juhayna Food Industries (JUFO.CA) and his son were released from prison in Egypt on Saturday after about two years in detention, according to a judicial source and a family member. The arrests of Safwan and Seifeldin Thabet two months apart had shaken Egypt’s business community as well as Egyptian and foreign investors. The Thabet family have denied any wrongdoing in statements on social media. A member of the Thabet family told Reuters the two men were released from a police station and returned home, but said the family had no other information about why they were freed. The family had pleaded for their release partly due to the illness of Safwan’s wife, who died during his detention.
Speaking to reporters in Senegal, Yellen warned that Washington could spur a global financial crisis and undermine the role of the dollar if it does not raise the $31.4 trillion debt limit. McCarthy said on Twitter he would meet Biden to "discuss a responsible debt ceiling increase to address irresponsible government spending." The U.S. government hit its $31.4 trillion borrowing limit on Thursday, a figure that reflects money already spent by the government. But the percolating battle over the U.S. debt limit later this year already is rattling markets and investors. Yellen noted the debt ceiling needs to be raised to cover borrowing on spending already authorized by Congress.
Netflix's elevation of Greg Peters to co-CEO shows the importance of its advertising sales effort. But Bela Bajaria's rise to content chief has caused some confusion about the future of the TV and film organization. The Netflix veteran now shares the role with current co-CEO Ted Sarandos, as company cofounder Reed Hastings steps down and settles into an executive chairman position. The move made a lot of sense to industry insiders, and even publicly, Netflix had been signaling the ascension for some time. Netflix insiders said Bajaria's new title underscored the importance of TV versus film in the streaming wars.

Over three dozen Regal Cinemas locations in the US are expected to close. Cineworld detailed the plan to reject the leases starting February 15 in a new bankruptcy filing on Tuesday. Regal is the second-largest cinema chain in the US, behind AMC, with over 500 theaters. The company's plan to close locations during its bankruptcy is fairly routine. Cineworld filed for bankruptcy at a time when the larger theatrical industry is struggling to fully rebound from the pandemic.

Jan 15 (Reuters) - Stock markets in the Gulf wobbled on Sunday with the Qatari index extending losses for a third session. Most Gulf currencies are pegged to the dollar and Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates usually mirror any monetary policy change in the United States. Elsewhere, Saudi Arabian Mining Co (Ma'aden) (1211.SE), the Gulf's largest miner, retreated 1.2%, ending two sessions of gains. However, Qatar National Bank (QNB) (QNBK.QA), the Gulf's biggest bank by assets, gained 0.7%, ending three sessions of losses. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index (.EGX30) added 0.1%, helped by a 5.3% jump in El Sewedy Electric (SWDY.CA).
More men are being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that is less likely to respond to treatments, a new study from the American Cancer Society suggests. Even more concerning than the rise in advanced cancer diagnoses is the increased number of prostate cancer deaths. “This increase is concerning and requires a new look at prostate cancer screening,” Tewari said. Essentially, that’s like 16 Boeing 747s crashing.”Black men had a 70% higher incidence of prostate cancer than white men. Declines in prostate cancer screeningIn 1994, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of measurements of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) to be used as part of a screening test for prostate cancer.
Last week, after ceding control to the ultra-right wing of his party, Rep. Kevin McCarthy became the 55th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. This happened after the dysfunction and division of the Republican House majority was placed in full view to the American public. Most news coverage has focused on the historical uniqueness of this drama — the personality and sometimes physical conflicts — and the embarrassment to the House Republican Caucus. The U.S. Treasury estimates that the debt limit vote will be needed in August. Finally, securing a Republican majority in the House gave the Republican party the opportunity to move beyond Donald Trump as it's leader.
Australia withdraw from ODI series against Afghanistan in March

Jan 12 (Reuters) - Australia's men's team has withdrawn from their one-day international (ODI) series against Afghanistan in March following further restrictions on women's and girls' rights imposed by the Taliban, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Thursday. Australia and Afghanistan were scheduled to play three ODIs in the United Arab Emirates but CA scrapped the series after "extensive consultation" with stakeholders, including the Australian government. The series formed part of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Super League, where the top eight teams automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup. Australia were scheduled to play a test match against Afghanistan in November 2021 but the fixture was postponed after the Taliban seized power in August of that year. They have continued to appear at ICC events since the Taliban takeover, however, and faced Australia during last year's Twenty20 World Cup.
Host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael opened his monologue with a blunt assessment: that he was there because "I'm Black." Carmichael recalled being called by Golden Globes producer Stephen Hill and being asked to host the awards. On the silver carpet, this year’s Golden Globe winner for best actress in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Michelle Yeoh and “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann also expressed the importance of celebrating all the talented people involved in Golden Globes. “I think it’s important because this is an international Golden Globe, right? Luhrmann echoed similar sentiments, saying, “I think the Golden Globes has really walked the walk, not just talked the talk.
The heavy rains are expected to worsen ongoing flooding and prolong the risk of flash flooding and mudslides across the state. Firefighters block the CA 192 Foothill road while the Arroyo Paredon Creek overflows due to heavy rainfall in Carpinteria on Monday. Heavy rainfall in the area, which is home to 10,000 people, had already flooded roads and creeks, he said. The flooding came five years to the day after heavy rains hammered a Montecito “burn scar,” killing nearly two dozen people. The severe weather also forced the Santa Barbara Airport to close due to flooding, the airport announced in a tweet Monday.
House Republicans are planning to launch a new subcommittee this week that will investigate communications between Big Tech companies and the Biden administration, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to CNBC. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who supported McCarthy in his bid for the speakership, is expected to chair the new subcommittee. The panel will investigate communications between the tech companies and the executive branch and search for signs of pressure leading to conservative censorship online. The three other companies Jordan included in the letters did not respond to previous requests for comment. Twitter later reversed the decision and its then-CEO said the actions the platform took were "wrong," changing its policies to prevent a recurrence.

Following a chaotic week in the U.S. House of Representatives over Kevin McCarthy's bid for speaker, Republican representatives said Sunday they are not worried that he gave up too much in order to secure the gavel. Republican Rep. Scott Perry, who was among the most outspoken opponents of McCarthy's speaker bid, flipped his vote for McCarthy on the 12th ballot. "This is never about Kevin McCarthy. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., said Sunday he's not worried that Kevin McCarthy conceded too much to get the speakership. But House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said if McCarthy is willing to try and find common ground, he will find willing partners among House Democrats.
The Texas Republican argued on CNN Sunday morning that "a little temporary conflict is necessary in this town." "Some of the tensions you saw on display when we saw some of the interactions there between Mike Rogers and Matt Gaetz, you know some of that is, we need a little of that. Kentucky Republican Rep. Andy Barr told ABC's "This Week" that the process "was quite healthy from the standpoint of getting all of these issues resolved now." "I understand the American people's frustration with the delay in electing a speaker," Barr said. "Not only did the framers of our Constitution expect us to debate the operations of the House and the House rules and how we're going to function, that's what a healthy democracy actually requires."
[1/9] A drone view of a tree that fell during a winter storm with high winds in Sacramento, California, U.S. January 8, 2023. Forecasters warned on Sunday that northern and central California was still in the path of a "relentless parade of cyclones," promising little relief for the region until the middle of the week. The latest storms vividly illustrated the consequences of warmer sea and air temperatures caused by climate change. At least seven people have died from weather-related incidents in California since the New Year's weekend, including a toddler who was killed by a redwood tree that fell and crushed a mobile home in northern California. Another severe storm was supposed to hit on Monday.

He said the first legislation he plans to tackle will repeal funding for more than 87,000 new IRS agents. McCarthy said the tense showdown on the House floor this week was proof that he is not someone who gives up easily. Though his election marked the end of a long week and night in Washington, McCarthy said it was also a new beginning for the nation. He told reporters on Friday night that he would be a more effective leader because of the drawn-out process. So now we'll be able to get the job done," McCarthy said. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a group tied to him, contributed more than $160 million to help Republican House candidates. McCarthy sent candidates $6.5 million from his own campaign and four other entities under his control, according to his campaign team.
