The MB-339 jet had exploded moments after takeoff at around noon local time, officials said, according to the Italian Fire Brigade. The Frecce Tricolori aerobatic jets, part of the Italian Air Force, were practicing a formation ahead of the 100-year celebrations of the Italian Air Force that are set to take place Sunday. Matteo Secci/APItalian media reported that the jets hit a flock of birds just after takeoff, according to CNN affiliate Sky24. The Italian Air Force said it was “dismayed and astonished” by the jet crash, according to a statement made by the Italian Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Air Squadron General Luca Goretti. The Italian Air Force has not confirmed the exact cause of the accident, but has hypothesized there was a bird strike during the very first phases of takeoff.

Rome, Italy CNN —The Italian city of Venice and its lagoon were not listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage in Danger list during a meeting of the UN agency in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, according to Italy’s culture ministry. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee had warned earlier in July that Italy was not doing enough to protect the city from the threat of overtourism, development and climate change. It recommended that it be added to its heritage danger list. After the decision not to list the city on its “in danger” list, the World Heritage Committee noted that the site still faces major challenges and asked Italy to continue to protect the site. The World Heritage Committee is expected to start discussions on Saturday about which sites to add to its renowned World Heritage List.

Consumer spending held up the US economy even as many worried about the prospect of a recession. Even as interest rates skyrocketed over the past 18 months, strong consumer spending kept the US economy moving. Higher rates start to biteLet's start with interest rates. New York CNN —The ‘Barbie’ movie, which turned into a global box office phenomenon in a matter of weeks, appears to be energizing sales of Barbie toys after its summer release. “That’s a significant increase,” said Jaime Katz, an analyst with Morningstar who covers Barbie toy maker, Mattel. Demand for Barbie products from the movie’s record-making success isn’t surprising. Although the Circana data didn’t breakout sales data for Barbie dolls, Katz said Barbie doll sales were growing well even before the movie release. “This could pose a problem in 2024, when Mattel is lapping elevated movie-related Barbie sales,” she said.

Footwear companies have found recent success going public market, but not all by any means over the longer-term. In more recent history, the brand has collaborated with Rick Owens, Dior, and Manolo Blahnik, among many other big names in fashion. The current IPO market landscape The IPO market has been all but frozen since the pandemic stock offering boom crashed, and successful IPOs have included iconic brands, such as the Johnson & Johnson spinoff of its consumer health business which includes Tylenol and band-Aids in the Kenvue IPO. Still, while Kenvue was the biggest deal of the year, it's barely holding onto its IPO price today, according to CNBC and Renaissance Capital data, and the IPO market overall hasn't performed great after listing. The two potential paths of a footwear IPO can be tracked by the histories of Crocs and Allbirds.

Despite placing her previous documentaries and concert films on streaming services in the past, the iconic pop star opted to deliver her Eras Tour film directly to cinemagoers this October. Watching ‘Barbie’ and Thinking About Death
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( Amanda Taub | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I really expected to love “Barbie.” As someone with proudly lowbrow taste in movies, I normally adore a big summer popcorn blockbuster, and every millennial woman I knew seemed to consider it a pop-nostalgia masterpiece. Instead, I left unsettled and frustrated: Something about the story seemed profoundly wrong to me, but I couldn’t articulate what it was. The play is set in a fictional totalitarian regime in which plays and literature are subject to strict censorship. That’s not because the government doesn’t respect the theater, a high-ranking censor named Mr. Celik explains to Adem, a young would-be playwright. Rather, it’s because it knows the power of stories to shape how people see the world, and to help them imagine how to change it.

US consumers are done splurging, Fed report suggests

Washington, DC CNN —After a summer of robust consumer spending, America’s bars, hotels and restaurants say the era of post-pandemic splurging by US consumers has likely drawn to a close. “Consumer spending on tourism was stronger than expected, surging during what most contacts considered the last stage of pent-up demand for leisure travel from the pandemic era,” the report said. Consumer spending rose 0.8% in July, the strongest monthly spending gain since January. But that strength in leisure spending began to level off toward the end of August, the latest Beige Book shows. Still, leisure spending varied by region, with some reporting a noticeable slowing and others saying it is holding steady.

New York CNN —Taylor Swift’s fans know the greatest films of all time were never made, but that could be called into question come October 13, when her Eras Tour concert movie is set for release in North America. Experts say that choosing movie theaters for the Eras Tour film’s debut over the small screen is a move fitting of both Swift’s business acumen and relationship with her fans. Unlike her previous concerts, the Eras Tour has become a cultural phenomenon. Others seemed to have their own reasons for concern about the Eras Tour film release’s timing. The “Exorcist: Believer,” originally scheduled to be released on the same day as Swift’s film, moved it up a week.
